The house is comfortable, homey, and so full of (email hidden) to call home for a few days! Located in laid-back, fun East Austin, about 1.5 miles from downtown in a quiet and family-friendly neighborhood. Close to restaurants, bars and music!

The Space

The house is comfortable, homey, and so full of (email hidden) to call home for a few days!

In your bright, peaceful room, there is a queen-sized bed, storage areas (dresser and closet are yours!), plenty of reading material, and a ceiling fan (we also have a fabulous inflatable mattress if you need it.) The room overlooks our spacious backyard, with tons of natural light.

Guest Access

In addition to your private room, you'll have access to a bathroom in the hall - we have towels, a hair dryer, and showery things in case you forget anything! You are also welcome to use the kitchen (plenty of pots, pans, etc), living room (comfy couch!), washer and dryer, WiFi, and TV with DVD player, Wii and Apple TV (with Netflix and Hulu Plus). The bedroom also has a door out to the big backyard and (email hidden) for your morning coffee (we'll make you a latte!).

Interaction with Guests

We live at the house, and are more than happy to share our favorite spots around Austin (and even (email hidden) in your room!), but we are also respectful of your vacation time!

The Neighborhood

We are located in laid-back, fun East Austin, about 1.5 miles from downtown in a quiet and family-friendly neighborhood.

East Austin is on plenty of top 10 lists, including number 7 on the hippest hipster neighborhoods in America - ranked based on walkability, coffee shops per capita, food trucks, locally-owned bars and restaurants, number and frequency of farmers markets and those working in artistic occupations (sounds good to us!).

East Austin "not only touts some of the most highly rated Mexican eateries in the country, but also coffee (email hidden) and food trucks like the East Side King parked outside of bars and music venues every night." (Forbes' Hipster Neighborhood Report)

Our home is close to a lot of fun bars (Frontier, the Liberty, White Horse Saloon, the E 6th Street bars), restaurants (Gourmands, Blue Dahlia, El Zunzal, Takoba, El Azteca) and great live music venues.

Getting around

There is plenty of free and safe street parking outside our home, so if you're bringing a car, you're in luck!

We're about a five minute car ride or a ten minute bike ride from downtown (and all the wondrous sights there) and two miles east of the Austin Convention Center, (about a 40 minute walk).

Our house is also quite close to number 4 bus line, which takes you straight downtown, and is just $1 for a one-way and $2 for a whole day ticket.

Other Things to Note

Our 7 year old son is with us half the time, so there's a chance there'll be an adorable blondie running around. We also have two sweet indoor/outdoor cats that you may see roaming the house and snuggling in your bed - they love you already, we can tell!

Note: during SXSW we also rent out the living room, so there may be a few other folks visiting.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Affordable accommodation in a good location for downtown Austin sightseeing. Helpful newcomer information was provided and appreciated. Home was comfortable with a relaxed and 'as it is' atmosphere of a family home including two mellow friendly cats.

  • Luke and Rachel were most accommodating, and are very cool folks to chat with. The A/C wasn't working the one night I stayed there, but they provided me a fan, which helped me sleep, and they were able to get the A/C fixed the morning after. Cute little house, and their cats are very friendly! I enjoyed my stay, as it (email hidden) to lay my head while in Austin. Their house isn't walking distance to downtown, but there are some cool little restaurants that are walkable, and it was only a $10 cab/uber/lyft ride to get most anywhere I wanted to go eat/socialize.

  • Staying at Luke and Rachel's was one of the best decisions of my trip (second only to, of course, planning a trip to Austin!) Their home was warm and welcoming, and they were nothing short of hospitable. Luke even offered me a ride to downtown on his way to work because my cab was running late one morning.

Their description was spot on - my friend and I enjoyed the use of their wifi and Apple TV, as well as their kitchen and washer/dryer! We also loved their little deck in the yard, and the swing on the porch. We really felt like we were coming home every night.

Thanks so much for such an enjoyable trip to Austin! We hope to be back soon :)

  • It was our first time using airbnb and it was great! Luke and Rachel were very accomodating. The kitties were an added plus! We had a short stay but enjoyed it very much especially being so close to everything.

  • Luke and Rachel have a great little place in a quiet part of town. Even though we didn't see them much, they were great hosts and even gave us a band-aid and neosporin when my friend cut her foot walking around. The room itself was perfect and had everything we needed. There was even a packet of information with a lot of good insider information on the city. We would definitely stay there again if they'd have us and we'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice, cozy place to stay in Austin. The cats were adorable, too. Thank you, Luke and Rachel!

  • Charming room in a convenient location! I came to Austin for the Psych Fest and was 10 minutes away from the venue, as well as in walking distance from restaurants and stores. The bed was very comfortable and I really enjoyed the proximity to the back porch and yard. My hosts were warm and friendly, but I hardly saw them with our schedules opposite. I will definitely stay here again.

  • My boyfriend and I had a great stay at Luke & Rachel's place in Austin. The house was very spacious and nice, and was located in a great neighborhood in town. We only met Luke briefly but he was very helpful and welcoming. I would highly recommend this space to anyone considering Austin!

  • We had a great time in Austin. Staying at Luke and Rachel's was a very warm and welcoming experience. We arrived late and left early yet we did manage to briefly talk to Luke and Rachel. The bus stop is very close to take you downtown and Gourmands Neighborhood Pub around the corner has decent food and drink options. We would definitely stay with Luke and Rachel again!

Luke is a professional (email hidden), and a novice gardener. Rachel is a social worker in a children's hospital, a fabulous baker, and a shower-singer. Although our feet often feel itchy and we want nothing more than to escape across the world, we love this town (especially all the magical swimming holes in the Texas Hill Country). Austin is the most wonderful place - you should come! Luke was an army brat and has been fortunate to live in a lot of cool places - Germany, Kenya, England, Alabama (he swears it's actually a pretty great place). His parents have lived in Mexico for 14 years and we try to visit often and explore different parts of the country (Luke once had a wild encounter with Zapatistas in Chiapas). Rachel grew up in Dallas, but got to Austin as soon as she could. She spent time in Sydney while finishing her master's degree, and is desperate to get back to the water as quick as she can. We are both interested in politics and working for social change. We love to listen to NPR, read the newspaper and then talk about (and occasionally do something about) what's happening in the world. Luke's 7 year old son lives with us half the time and we're having grand adventures. Luckily, he's quite outgoing - loves meeting new people and trying new things. The "Guess Which Country This Food Is From" game is one of his favorites. (And! a little irrelevant, but we're getting married in November! Yay!)
