The house is comfortable, homey, and so full of love - a great place to call home for a few days! Located in laid-back, fun East Austin, about 1.5 miles from downtown in a quiet and family-friendly neighborhood. Close to restaurants, bars and music!
The house is comfortable, homey, and so full of love - a great place to call home for a few days!
In your bright, peaceful room, there is a queen-sized bed, storage areas (dresser and closet are yours!), plenty of reading material, and a ceiling fan (we also have a fabulous inflatable mattress and extra blankets if you need it.) The room overlooks our spacious backyard, with tons of natural light.
This is a room in the house that we live in with our eight year old son and two beautiful cats. The house is full of love, and also Legos in the living room and occasional dishes in the sink! We hope that you remember that as we welcome you into this house, we also welcome you into our home!
In addition to your private room, you'll have access to a bathroom in the hall - we have towels, a hair dryer, and showery things in case you forget anything! You are also welcome to use the kitchen (plenty of pots, pans, etc), living room (comfy couch!), washer and dryer, WiFi, and TV with DVD player, Wii and Apple TV (with Netflix and Hulu Plus). The bedroom also has a door out to the big backyard and deck - a perfect place for your morning coffee (we'll make you a latte!).
Interaction with Guests
We live at the house, and are more than happy to share our favorite spots around Austin (and even have a little book of recommendations in your room!), but are also respectful of your vacation time!
We are located in laid-back, fun East Austin, about 1.5 miles from downtown in a quiet and family-friendly neighborhood.
East Austin is on plenty of top 10 lists, including number 7 on the hippest hipster neighborhoods in America - ranked based on walkability, coffee shops per capita, food trucks, locally-owned bars and restaurants, number and frequency of farmers markets and those working in artistic occupations (sounds good to us!).
East Austin "not only touts some of the most highly rated Mexican eateries in the country, but also coffee shops, a farmers market and food trucks like the East Side King parked outside of bars and music venues every night." (Forbes' Hipster Neighborhood Report)
Our home is close to a lot of fun bars (Frontier, the Liberty, White Horse Saloon, the E 6th Street bars), restaurants (Gourmands, Blue Dahlia, El Zunzal, Takoba, El Azteca) and great live music venues.
There is plenty of free and safe street parking outside our home, so if you're bringing a car, you're in luck!
We're about a five minute car ride or a ten minute bike ride from downtown (and all the wondrous sights there) and two miles east of the Austin Convention Center, (about a 40 minute walk).
Our house is also quite close to number 4 bus line, which takes you straight downtown, and is just $1 for a one-way and $2 for a whole day ticket.
Other Things to Note
Our 8 year old son is with us half the time, so there's a chance there'll be an adorable blondie running around. We also have two sweet indoor/outdoor cats that you may see roaming the house and snuggling in your bed - they love you already, we can tell!
Note: during SXSW we also rent out the living room, so there may be a few other folks visiting.
Rachel and Luke have a sweet laid back home in a part of Austin I don't think we'd have discovered on our own. The bed was super comfy and the kitties were affectionate and funny. Their welcoming attitude and generous offers to use the kitchen and laundry were taken up on and greatly appreciated.
Luke and Rachel were the sweetest! Very welcoming, despite my late arrival. The room was comfy and came complete with an adorable cat friend :)
Had a great stay. They were really friendly but also left us to do our own thing which was great. The location was good with plenty of parking outside the house and some good places to eat and drink 15mins walk away for when we didn't want to drive.
Rachel and Luke were very gracious hosts. Their home is very tastefully decorated and well kept. The room itself was spacious and clean with a great walkout onto their yard at the back. The location is at the east end which is a fair bit of a distance from downtown. However, if you're looking for excellent eats in Austin, Qui and Gimbroni's are within walking distance. If you're without a car, there is a bike share stand ($8/day) a few blocks away that is great to cover distances and bike around the lake. We would highly recommend this place to visitors who are looking to experience Austin beyond just the conveniences of the downtown core. The cats are adorable and very friendly - just something to keep in mind if you have allergies.
It's my first time to use AIRBNB. As a foriegner it was bit nervous, but the house was good to find, felt safe and secure. Luke and Rachel were very warm make me feel comfortable. I had happy time with them. I miss Austin and the house!
Luke and Rachel were great hosts, very accommodating and flexible (our plans changed due to flight cancellations). Their house is very cosy and charming.
Off the beaten track, it was a cozy and comfortable room. We didn't have a car but we like to walk and we did. It was nice to be able to use the host's bikes so we could cover more territory. Please leave a washcloth or two in the (email hidden)uldn't wash my face at night.

Luke is a professional activist , a sometime actor, and a novice gardener. Rachel is a social worker in a children's hospital, a fabulous baker, and a shower-singer. Although our feet often feel itchy and we want nothing more than to escape across the world, we love this town (especially all the magical swimming holes in the Texas Hill Country). Austin is the most wonderful place - you should come!
Luke was an army brat and has been fortunate to live in a lot of cool places - Germany, Kenya, England, Alabama (he swears it's actually a pretty great place). His parents have lived in Mexico for 14 years and we try to visit often and explore different parts of the country (Luke once had a wild encounter with Zapatistas in Chiapas).
Rachel grew up in Dallas, but got to Austin as soon as she could. She spent time in Sydney while finishing her master's degree, and is desperate to get back to the water as quick as she can.
We are both interested in politics and working for social change. We love to listen to NPR, read the newspaper and then talk about (and occasionally do something about) what's happening in the world.
Luke's 7 year old son lives with us half the time and we're having grand adventures. Luckily, he's quite outgoing - loves meeting new people and trying new things. The "Guess Which Country This Food Is From" game is one of his favorites.
