Cabo Matapalo, known by the locals as simply Matapalo, is a small community located 17 km South, on a bumpy dirt road, from the town of Puerto Jimenez. The area consists of a scattering of eco-lodges and rental homes with one local bar. There are no banks or grocery stores, so make sure to stock up in Puerto Jimenez before heading out. Over the years Matapalo has become a surf destination. It borders a beach along the Pacific Ocean that routinely ushers in large swells. There are several areas to surf, with waves that vary in difficulty. The abundant wildlife also makes this area popular among travelers. Four species of monkeys, scarlet macaws, toucans, sloths, agouties, and coatimundis are just a small sample of the wildlife that one sees on a regular basis. Matapalo is where travelers go to be at one with nature and find ultimate relaxation.
Local public transportation, known as the colectivo, offers daily trips to and from Puerto Jimenez. There are also taxis available to make the trip, or you can rent a car in Puerto Jimenez.
It was a wonderfull experience! the house was perfect, the beach amazing and the host and care takers welcoming and helpfull! all round I could not hace asked for a better experience.
100% worth the effort to get here. Comfort and quality surrounded by wildlife , rainforest, ocean and privacy. There was no complications in any of the transactions. Gretchen was prompt and thorough in her communications. Dealing with her and the property was simple and smooth. A typical day for us was mornings gathering coconuts to have fresh coconut water with breakfast. Late morning was spent exploring the beaches or take a hike on the trails into the rainforest. A lot of wildlife to be seen, some of it up close. I suggest bringing binoculars for all the colorful bird life you will see. Afternoons we were back on the beach swimming and exploring the tide pools. Most days ended up with some fishing so we could have fresh fish for dinner. A couple lived on the front part of the property in a separate house. They are the caretakers of the property and very helpful with any questions or needs I threw at them. The way the property is arranged you have complete privacy from the caretaker's house. This house and the location is worth the trip from San Jose. The further you get away from San Jose the more beautiful Costa Rica becomes. Give yourself some time on the ride here to stop at some of the sea food restaurants and fruit stands along the way.
It is hard to put into words how truly amazing this place is, but will try. Paradise. The house and grounds are stunningly beautiful, meticulously maintained, and almost dream like. You are in a jungle. Everything about our stay exceeded expectations. Olman and Elba live on site about a hundred or so yards from the house, and are care takers of the home. Our stay would not have been the same if it wasn't for these two. They are the nicest people we have ever met and will help you with anything needed. For example, first day we were there we asked Olman where a nice sandy swimming beach was and he led us on 10 min walk through the jungle to the most pristine sandy cove (even though the house is within throwing distance of the ocean). The cove was heaven on earth, just want we were craving during our stay. We wanted to have a fire on the beach one night and we asked Olman if that was ok, if it was legal. The next night he took us to the beach in front of the house where he had already assembled a VW bus size pile of dead palms and wood. Lit the fire for us and we hung out on the beach, fireside, for a few hours. Seriously amazing people. They don't speak English, but we had some spanish speaking experience and could carry simple conversations with them through our stay. Actually helped us a lot with our spanish speaking abilities. They do have a daughter that speaks pretty good English if you don't know any spanish. Matapalo is a wonderful small local community right on the beach. One member of our group had been to, and traveled around, Costa Rica 3 previous times. She said with confidence this is the most beautiful relaxing area she has been to in CR. If you are looking to escape, get away from it all, relax where the jungle meets the beach, and monkeys and toucans play in the trees, this is the place for you. Oh, yeah, surfing here is world class too.
The house is a beautiful jungle home, with the most beautiful garden ever been. It is exactly as it is described and in the pictures. It's provided with everything you need, with just minor exceptions (i.e. the internet didn't always work properly, or we had to save power because there was too little sun) - but since Matapalo is off-grid you can't really count those. Gretchen answered quickly whenever we needed something special, and for everything else, there was the caretaker, so we never felt left alone.
We recommend it.
