Building History
This special property is nestled on a north facing hill, in a quiet beautiful 1895 Victorian building in the Eureka Valley (Castro). This romantic intimate space is perfect for the single traveler or couple who is after an authentic Victorian experience.

William H. Johnson who immigrated to the United States in 1881 from Finland, was unmarried, with two small children, a son Victor age 3 and a daughter Ethel age 1. In the autumn of 1895 he moved his family into his newly completed residence known as the W.H.Johnson House.

As an experienced traveler I understand the desire for freedom and flexibility so I have created this private space to be fully self-catering and easy for you to come and go as you wish. As you consider your time in San Francisco I hope you consider the Tradesman Pied-à-terre as part of your stay. You will experience more than a 'room', you will understand what it is like to live in the heart of a neighborhood with Victorian architecture and beauty. As you consider your stay in the space please take the time to learn about the neighborhood, the property and the house rules. I am sure you will be happy with your choice.

If I can be of any support during your decision process or your stay I am happy to help out.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

  • George greeted us on the doorsteps and gave us a warm welcome and walkthrough. He even had a box of fresh baked cookies for us.

The place was clean and the bed was firm and comfortable.
We had access to the courtyard and it was a great spot to enjoy the sun and the free Keurig coffee left out for each day's stay.
There was a mini fridge and sink/kitchenette stocked with coffee mugs, plates and glassware.

Overall location was great for the Castro and we even found parking along street as needed. (we were there over a weekend and had some day trips).

I would certainly recommend and would stay there again.
    Thanks George!

  • George's place was perfect. Very cozy. Incredibly close to Castro St. Great on-street parking in the neighborhood as long as you're leaving early in the morning on weekdays. A very easy place to come back to at the end of a long day.

  • Comfortable stay and conveniently located. George was available to answer any questions.

  • We enjoyed our time at the Tradesmen. George was very friendly and hospitable. The room was clean and comfortable. We were able to spend some time in the garden and it was very nice. It added a lot to the experience having that space available.

The house was conveniently located to public transportation although it was at the top of one of the many hills in San Francisco so we got our exercise in each day. We ended up taking the Supershuttle from the airport which allowed us to avoid hauling our luggage up the hill.

    Thank you, George.

  • The Tradesmen Pied-à-terre was the perfect fit for my traveling companion and I and our four day visit to San Francisco. George was a very welcoming host and accommodating for our later-than-usual arrival. The room was a good size, had a comfortable bed and even came with two Clipper cards to load up on public transit travel in the city. In addition, George was great at recommending local restaurants and the room came with a DVD documentary of the Castro's rich history. This place is highly recommended!

  • Fantastic little place in the Castro with access to a beautiful garden, your own entrance makes the place feel very private and the neighbourhood is classic San Fran Victorian and very quiet and only 5 mins to bars, cafés and restaurants.
George is a great host and on hand to help with any queries, this place is fantastic value for money, spotlessly clean and comes highly recommended.

    October 2013
  • Very cute and cosy flat located in a residential block in Castro area, within short distance from tranportation.
We had a wonderful time in SF (3 days is way too short though!)
    Definitely recommend this place !!
    Thanks again George!

George, a San Francisco resident for over 24 years and a 5th generation Californian has close family ties throughout the State of California. His history and family range as far back as the early years of this state’s ranching and agriculture history. George spent most of his early life on Southern California’s coastline and in the desert community of Palm Springs. Many of his summers were spent on the Monterey peninsula where his passion for the landscape and the diverse environment led him to pursue a degree in horticulture, focusing on California ornamental and native plants. With this passion for California and its diverse and beautiful landscape he has created a warm and inviting home, which is reflective of this state’s beauty and his passion. As you consider San Francisco and your stay in my neighborhood I am happy to share more about ‘My City’, my travels around the world and how San Francisco compares to the many places, adventures, and people I have met along the way. I am happy to have you experience first-hand why I love the City by the Bay and help you see it for its beauty, off-beat personality and its extremely diverse culture and people. As a guest in my home you will experience the feeling of a true San Francisco Painted Lady with all the modern conveniences at your door. With proximity to the famed and historic Castro neighborhood you will have a variety of stores, restaurants and social venues. As your host I can provide any information on the many neighborhood establishments as well as the incredible sight’s throughout the city, all are easy given the home’s central location and easy access to public transportation. I look forward to having you as a guest in my home, experiencing all of San Francisco and continually returning to explore it over and over again.
