In December 2012 the eco-cottage was completed on the property. If you have a large group, you may want to rent both the farm home and cottage. The buildings are far enough away from each other for total privacy, yet close enough for families/friends to be together when you would like. If that is what you are looking for you can share 2 kitchens, 2 baths, 4 bedrooms with sleeping for 14 in beds. The eco-cottage website is (website hidden)
Our water source is 100% rainwater caught from the roof of our home and stored in catchment tanks. County water is made available to you in the kitchen for drinking.
Nikki (owner) lives on property part time in the ohana. If you'd like, she would be happy to give you a farm tour, let you know about Natural Farming, assist you in things to do, places to go and local happenings. She can take you swimming with the wild dolphins or touring around the island. If you would like to set up a tour ahead of time just let here know. Nikki has been a certified massage therapist for 20 years & if you would like to schedule massage/spa services please allow advanced booking time for that as well. You can check out her (email hidden). If you prefer to have 100 % privacy that is fine and will be fully honored (sometimes you really want to just get away from it all). The farm is a working organic natural farm with chickens, 2 friendly outdoor cats, plants, trees & gardens… so tending to the farm might be occurring during your stay. Your privacy is fully respected.
this is a working farm so it is a quiet, healthy, nature loving environment... so no parties, smoking, drugs or drama..we like to work with nature here so we try to be quiet and respectful of others always and are pretty early to bed/early to rise as a rule.... quiet hours between 9pm and 7am. No smoking on property. Veggies, nuts & fruit are available for purchase when available (just ask what is in season)... Mahalo
A more rugged option, this place definitely gives a feeling of being immersed in nature. As with any home in the tropics, excessive moisture is a constant threat, and even more so with older buildings; advise caution to those coming from a dry climate, especially those with severe mold sensitivities. The check-in process was very smooth with Nikki there to greet us, and the location was very convenient for getting to the south part of the island. Although we only ended up staying one of the three nights booked, the location really was one of the high points: so many beautiful photos on the black sand beach! The billing process was a little bit confusing, as local taxes were due in cash post booking; I suggest the host roll that into the room rate to simplify things and avoid surprises. Turned out to be not our kind of place, but for a unique individual could be just the ticket.
mahalo John for the feedback... I agree with you that the Hawaii taxes are a bummer. I have tried to figure out how to deal with that with airbnb & their solution was to have it written in my rate write up, let the guests know ahead of time and collect it from the guests upon arrival. if I roll it into the room rate I end up paying 13.41% taxes on the taxes I collect as well as income taxes on state taxes. Because I claim the rental incomes as my main source of income I have to do it this way.... I hope your stay on the island after you left the farm was awesome.... blessings to you and your wife!
We loved staying on Nikki's farm. Nikki was warm and friendly and very welcoming to our family. She gave me a wonderful massage on the day we arrived. The house was spacious, clean and comfortable. We loved using the barbecue on the lanai. There is a great DVD selection of movies and a huge comfortable living room at the house. We chose this location because it is close to our favorite snorkeling spot on the island. We were also conveniently located close to the green sand beach on the southern part of the island and we were only an hour from Volcanoes National Park. Nikki provided coolers and beach chairs to use during our stay and offers snorkel gear for rent. The kitchen is very well stocked with everything you need to cook a wonderful meal. It was great to stay in a place where environmental sustainability is a high priority. We are very much looking froward to another stay in this great accommodation on the big island in the future!
My wife and I and our two best friends thoroughly enjoyed our 10 day stay at Nikki's wonderful home. Waking up to the sound of birds, surrounded by her organic garden of tropical plants was a rare treat. We dined every morning and evening on the Lanai and couldn't have been happier with our accommodation, our wonderful hostess and the area. We are recommending this accommodation to all our friends travelling to the Big Island.
The house at Nikki's eco-farm was very comfortable and I felt quite at home upon arrival. The house rules are very reasonable, the location is easy to find and it is relatively convenient to the places/activities we hoped to see. Highlights include: the covered deck overlooking the grove of fruit and avocado trees, the outdoor shower and the farm produce that Nikki offers for sale.
Nikki was very accommodating (leaving lights on for us and our late arrival) and welcoming when we met--it was like meeting an old friend. She also offers great advice on local sights to see. My only regret at this point is that we couldn't stay longer and enjoy the space more. Barring that, I look forward to coming back soon.
After spending three nights at this property, I have to say I'm genuinely surprised by the previous reviews. Quite rundown. It was a bit noisy cause it was right by the highway which made it not a peaceful experience.
