The best stop between San Jose and the Caribbean Coast. The newly constructed cabin is private, and set in paradise. Perfect for couples and multiple families looking to escape the tourist traps but still looking for an authentic Costa Rican cloud-forest adventure.

The space

Set on a mountain top cloud forest with year round cool tropical climate, views and water falls. Stay in a newly constructed cabin, hike the mountain and explore 360 degrees of nature at every step. Views of Volcan Turrialba and full moons can be seen from the comfort of your bed

Temperature rarely reaches much above 85F in the day and 65F on the coldest nights so no need for AC or Heating here. We recommend guests bring jeans, socks and sweaters.

Visitors see amazing things here. Brilliantly starry nights and full moons, world class bird watching, an orchid exhibition with over 100 specimen. The pure life.

Hosts live in the main lodge, a comfortable distance from the cabin and can set up private waterfall, swimming hole, and jungle tours.

Guest access

Guests have access to mountain hiking trails, swimming holes, tilapia pond, water falls, and their private yoga/dance/music/relax space.

Interaction with guests

First off, we help guests get acquainted with the home area, which covers about 5 acres.

Each day, we can set up guided tours to the guests to explore something special in the surrounding 85 acres of rain-forest. That could include trips to private swimming holes, waterfalls, and intense jungle hikes.

Our host Mariluz runs Mari's Place, a private dining experience offering traditional Costa Rican dishes and grill favorites in a private picturesque setting overlooking the river. Mari's Place is walking distance from the accommodation and is quickly becoming popular with foodies. Our guests often take advantage of having Mariluz as their private chef for their entire stay. Breakfasts are included with nightly stays.

If guests have questions, or need anything, we are here to help. But we are definitely interested in giving guests their privacy.

Other things to note

Looking for an off-road adventure? The roads here are rocky (and rock!). We cater to those with a love for the road. Like the saying goes, if it happens on two wheels, it's cools with us. Unless you are biking or taking your motorcycle up here, you will need a 4x4. Sorry, that economy compact car might not make it up here without making you liable on that damage-insurance policy. Heck, it might be worth it though ;)

If your party is bigger than 4, we offer two other cabins across the road that can accomodate six people in total.

We enjoyed two great nights with Mari and Barrett on our way to Cahuita and Manzanillo. The accommodations were just what we were looking for, a relaxing place to experience some wildlife while on our way to the coast. The road from the bus station surely requires 4wd, if you are lucky as we were Barrett will pick you up for less than the taxi's. Mari's food was top notch and made our stay relaxing after a long day of travel. Would recommend to anyone looking for relaxation or a place to stay on your way to Cauhita or Puerto Viejo. Thanks again!

Awesome place! The road to the home is an adventure in itself! They're not lying when they say to get a 4x4. Mariluz cooking was wonderful, her fresh juices were top notch... Would recommend adding some sort of circulation into room as it does get quite stale. The swimming hole was definitely was a site to see. Also the place comes with a great tour guide, little dog showed us around the whole property. :)

THIS PLACE IS SO COOL! Definitely stay here if you get the chance. We chose it because we wanted to avoid crowds and explore the mountains. It is so secluded and beautiful it's magical. Mariluz and Barrett are super nice; Barrett picked us up from the bus stop and (like everyone else has said) the food is the best we had on our whole trip. Seafood soup, fried fish, sopa negra, and rice pudding were some of my favorite dishes. They even accommodated our pescatarian diet. It was very rainy during our stay, so most days we lounged around reading and did little walks in the mountains. There is an amazing swimming hole nearby that we thoroughly enjoyed. There's also so much good bird watching. I would definitely recommend coming here to relax for a few days. Oh and like everyone says, the road is absolutely insane. Plan on not going down it until it's time to leave.

Mariluz and Barrett's place is a very relaxing place to stay, while being an authentic experience away from all the crowds. The bed was super comfortable, and the space was unique. Since it is up quite a long 4x4 road, I would recommend bringing any snacks, drinks, or food you might need for your stay. It is great that Mariluz & Barrett serve food for a reasonable rate, and Mariluz seems incredibly passionate about her cooking! We only stayed one night but we loved the property and being able to hike to the waterfall.

Mari and Barrett are great host. Mari is a wonderful cook. Great place to take hikes, enjoy the birds or swim in a cool mountain stream. Opening the window curtains reveals an impressive view especially at night when the stars are jumping out of the sky.

Place is amazing. Pretty off the grid. Must have 4x4. Road is back in the boonies. Pretty basic as far as anemeties. Hope your used to camping. That being said, it was an amazing night. The food was amazing and we loved waking up to the birds. They are a great host and have An amazing place.

Truly a unique experience. Barrett was very accommodating and the food was some of the best on our entire trip to Costa Rica. If you want to go 'off the grid' and experience jungle life away from the crowds this is a great place to give it a try.
