We stayed for a week at Peter's apartment in Soufriere. Peter was so easy going, welcoming (as was Mocha!) and full of local knowledge, insights and advice which really enhanced our stay and experience of the town. The apartment was great- clean, equipped with everything you might need, a lovely patio with an unbelievable view, as well as a great selection of music! It was within easy walking distance of the town, and the beach. We would love to come back and stay again.
From the moment we arrived at the airport in St. Lucia, Peter made sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. His place in Soufriere has a majestic view of the town and the landscape and also happens to be convenient for trips to the beach, restaurants, etc.
We had an amazing stay at Peter's Soufriere apartment. The location is fantastic-just a short walk to town and close to some of the best attractions on the whole island! The apartment is spacious and comfortable and has a covered terrace with amazing views of the water, town and the Pitons. What made our stay extraordinary was Peter's hospitality. He took the time to personally walk us into town the day we arrived to help us acclimate and to give us an authentic feel for Soufriere. Peter checked in with us each morning to provide recommendations and advice for our daily adventures. If you enjoy getting away from bus loads of tourists and like to delve into the culture of a new area like we do, Peter's apartment in Soufriere is the place for you!
Peter was very welcoming and helpful, which I particularly appreciated as I was travelling on my own. All the trips he recommended were great; just remember that the hike to Gros Piton is REALLY challenging!
Trevor the driver was very polite and reliable; he also gave touristy information on the way and stopped for photos! The apartment was fine - the best thing being the wonderful view of the Piton!
A piece of advice: bring some insect repellent!
Our time at Peter's home in Soufriere was nothing short of magical. The location was ideal. A gorgeous view overlooking the town with the Petit Piton as the backdrop. We enjoyed spending every morning on the patio, soaking in the view with a cup of tea. It is a quick, 5 minute walk into the heart of town and beautiful, longer walk (30 minutes or so) to Anse Chastinet - a peaceful beach just north of town. We were able to plan some incredible day-trips including hiking the Gros Piton and swimming at Sugar Beach, and visiting the Volcano for a mud bath followed by a stroll through the Botanical Gardens. You will not be bored, as Soufriere sits at the heart of some of the main attractions on the island. The town has no resorts or hotels, so you really get to explore the local culture without the distraction of boatloads of tourists. And Peter was incredibly gracious with his time - giving us a tour of the town once we arrived, pointing out local food spots and good bars. He accompanied us to the Saturday Market, where we were able to stock up on locally grown veggies for a couple of homemade meals. Our only complaint is that we wished we were able to stay longer. I highly recommend this apartment if you are looking for a kind and gracious host, plenty of opportunities for adventure, and a good, local island experience.
We very much enjoyed our stay at Peter's place in Soufriere. The highlights for us were the wonderful view and being able to prepare our own meals, but most of all we appreciated the local community vibe with which Peter very much helped us interface. The colour and vibrance of the local Carribean beach life we find very appealing and affable Soufriere was the perfect place to experience this without the tourist overlay.
Thanks to Peter and his apartment, our vacation was one of a kind.
We loved the location, and view. More than that though, we went on the tour with Peter which allowed us to meet locals and feel much more comfortable touring Soufriere, which otherwise would have been quite intimidating. We met his friends, which ended up saving us a lot time and energy (twice!).
The difference between a resort and Peter's apartment is nearly inexplicable. We'll give you our rendition though:
Staying with Peter allowed us to have access to insider knowledge, from someone that wanted your stay to be great and wanted nothing more than for you to share his love of the island. There was no pressure to go anywhere or see anything, and best of all - spend more money unnecessarily. Peter will not only introduce you to Soufriere, but help you plan the rest of your trip and ensure you get taxis, reservations, or introductions to the appropriate people who provide similar care. Saint Lucia is obviously a love and passion of his. (If you plan your trip well and within guidance, you'll likely experience many things that others never even thought of, and certainly restaurants & adventures beyond what the resort will recommend)
The apartment itself is very simple, relatively homelike for us. Kitchen, eating area, living space, small bathroom, and bedroom. (nice covered porch as well)
We missed the AC a bit, but a cold shower and the fans suited us well - even with the night temperature not dropping much in May. Plus, our adventurous days tired us out and we slept well with fans on and windows open.
Another stark comparison is the nature and quiet setting of a resort. At Peter's plenty of wildlife, plus trees w/fresh fruit, existed. It was great for us to see the lizards, frogs, and flora. At night there were bats, but nothing near enough to both us, plus, mixed with the citronella candle, it kept the bugs away. The resorts on the other hand clearly spray for bugs, set traps for wildlife, and do whatever they can to avoid guest complaints.
Another item that some people mention is the noise from town. There is noise in Soufriere, nearly 24/7. Dance parties, people speaking loudly, sport matches nearby, and roosters in the morning. Not resortlike at all, but again, offers assimilation into the culture that makes Saint Lucia unique.
It's fine if you're searching for ultimate peace and solitude. I assure you though, you won't recognize one island from the next if you pursue that route.
In summation, in just a short while, staying with Peter will allow Saint Lucia to feel like home. You'll know the people, cultural expectations, and even have assurance that you're not being taken advantage of when venturing out. For us, that is what vacation is all about and we couldn't have been happier with our choice to stay with Peter. The PEOPLE make your stay great on Saint Lucia!
