Interaction with Guests
My house is above the apartment and I am available 24/7.
Soufriere is generally a quiet town but at the weekends things liven up. The people are friendly, the views are amazing and the sun is always hot.
Public transport runs from Monday - Saturday. Airport transfer is generally by Taxi.
For the comfort and enjoyment of all guests, smoking is not permitted inside the apartment. Guests who do wish to smoke are requested to do so on the outside patio area where ashtrays are provided.
To help conserve energy guests are asked to turn off fans and other appliances when not in residence.
Thanks to Peter and his apartment, our vacation was one of a kind.
We loved the location, and view. More than that though, we went on the tour with Peter which allowed us to meet locals and feel much more comfortable touring Soufriere, which otherwise would have been quite intimidating. We met his friends, which ended up saving us a lot time and energy (twice!).
The difference between a resort and Peter's apartment is nearly inexplicable. We'll give you our rendition though:
Staying with Peter allowed us to have access to insider knowledge, from someone that wanted your stay to be great and wanted nothing more than for you to share his love of the island. There was no pressure to go anywhere or see anything, and best of all - spend more money unnecessarily. Peter will not only introduce you to Soufriere, but help you plan the rest of your trip and ensure you get taxis, reservations, or introductions to the appropriate people who provide similar care. Saint Lucia is obviously a love and passion of his. (If you plan your trip well and within guidance, you'll likely experience many things that others never even thought of, and certainly restaurants & adventures beyond what the resort will recommend)
The apartment itself is very simple, relatively homelike for us. Kitchen, eating area, living space, small bathroom, and bedroom. (nice covered porch as well)
We missed the AC a bit, but a cold shower and the fans suited us well - even with the night temperature not dropping much in May. Plus, our adventurous days tired us out and we slept well with fans on and windows open.
Another stark comparison is the nature and quiet setting of a resort. At Peter's plenty of wildlife, plus trees w/fresh fruit, existed. It was great for us to see the lizards, frogs, and flora. At night there were bats, but nothing near enough to both us, plus, mixed with the citronella candle, it kept the bugs away. The resorts on the other hand clearly spray for bugs, set traps for wildlife, and do whatever they can to avoid guest complaints.
Another item that some people mention is the noise from town. There is noise in Soufriere, nearly 24/7. Dance parties, people speaking loudly, sport matches nearby, and roosters in the morning. Not resortlike at all, but again, offers assimilation into the culture that makes Saint Lucia unique.
It's fine if you're searching for ultimate peace and solitude. I assure you though, you won't recognize one island from the next if you pursue that route.
In summation, in just a short while, staying with Peter will allow Saint Lucia to feel like home. You'll know the people, cultural expectations, and even have assurance that you're not being taken advantage of when venturing out. For us, that is what vacation is all about and we couldn't have been happier with our choice to stay with Peter. The PEOPLE make your stay great on Saint Lucia!
We had such a wonderful time at Peter's place in Soufriere! Peter is, by far, the kindest man we met on the island. He cares so much about his guests making them feel like they are at home and making sure they'll love so much the island they won't have no choice but to come back! That being said, you need to know that Peter's place has a je-ne-sais-quoi truly unique. Maybe it is the cleanliness of the flat or the "oh-my-god!" terrace overlooking the town with nothing else than the majestuous Petit Piton as a background of it, who knows? Peter made a heaven of his garden making sure his guests will feel the local life with all the privacy needed. His advices were much more than useful, and the tour of the town by walking had been a really good starter. The apartment is well equiped so does the kitchen and the well apreciated "starter kit" of his own in the fridge. We liked the fact that the windows were screened against the insects and the guava tree on the terrace. Peter's place is perfect for people who wants to live the local life, mix with locals and feel the caribbean warm hospitality. Yes, at night, you can hear roosters, dogs, cars, people yelling or putting on loud reggae music. This is part of the lifestyle in Soufriere. If you need a resort lifestyle of a Burger King, then book somewhere else in Rodney Bay. In Soufriere, you eat for almost nothing in tiny bars and restaurants. Have you ever wanted to try something new, a real experience? Go to Peter's place for at least five days to enjoy all the attractions near Soufriere. Don't miss the Sulphur Springs, Botanical Garden, Gros Piton nature trail and sunset cruise on the bay! Would definitely come back!
Peter is a very friendly and symphatic person, who helped us to feel like at home just from the beginning when we arrived. If you really want to enjoy, feel and hear the real life of the caribbean this would be the perfect place to stay. We still miss the amazing view to the pitons. We defenitely recommend a tour with Peter to town. Thank you Peter for having us.
Peter was a wonderful host. He arranged for a driver, Clavie, to meet us at the airport (his usual driver, Trevor was away). Clavie was also available to take us on any excursions around the island, and to the airport on our last day. He was a very good guide, and did not pressure us to do anything we were not interested in. Upon arrival, Peter showed us the apartment and also took us into town so we could see where to shop and eat. It only takes a few minutes to walk into Soufriere. The house sits just above the town - enough to have a great view of the harbor and the Petit Piton, but not so high up as to make the walk up from town difficult. Peter stocked the refrigerator with a few items to get us started, including sodas and Piton beer. Mocha was always around to greet us, as well. The gardens around the house are lush, and Peter picked guava fruits for us each morning, which provided a wonderful scent in our room. The covered porch is a great place to hang out at any time of day with a cool drink, and the color at sunrise and sunset is very nice. You do hear the frogs chirping at night and the roosters crowing in the morning...you are definitely part of the town and its daily life. This is all part of the apartment's charm. We are not warm weather people, yet the fans were adequate for most of the time. The air can be still during the day, but there is usually a breeze at Peter's in the evening. We took water taxi's to a few of the local resort beaches. We went mid morning and stayed through mid-afternoon,when we had arranged for the water taxi's to retrieve us. You can use facilities at the resorts, so we were able to swim, snorkel, and eat lunch. The beaches were very relaxing, and not crowded at this time of year since it is the end of the high tourist season. We walked to the Botanical Gardens, which are very nice, and went by car to Tet Paul, which had a great guide and terrific views of the Pitons and the southern portion of the island. The tropical rain forest that borders Soufriere has its own micro climate, and we sometimes had a cooling rain shower in the early morning and late afternoon. Peter was available whenever we had questions. We also met up with him sometimes in the afternoon for a cooling drink in the afternoon in one of the downtown corner places to eat. Most people in town were very nice, and all recognized Peter's name. Peter's recommendation of local food establishments was helpful. and the local food, while not as fancy as at the resorts, was well prepared and very inexpensive. Soufriere really has everything you need nearby, so we did not feel that we needed a car. However, the costs...
Peter was an incredibly friendly host. He met us when we arrived, provided all the required information about the apartment, and even gave us a guided tour of Soufriere.
The apartment itself is as described in the listing - pretty basic. Was clean when we arrived.
The problem for us was that the apartment doesn't include air-conditioning (which is mentioned in the description, no complaints); we had a very hard time sleeping due to the warm temperature in the apartment. Peter did provide a fan for the bedroom, but it was very noisy and actually distracted us even further. On top of that, there was loud music coming from the town of Soufriere until very late at night, which of course made everything much worse.
Bottom line we decided to leave early and find another place to stay after the first sleepless night.
Again, Peter was very friendly, and I don't feel as if he misled me in any way. I guess my wife and I are light sleepers compared to other people.
I believe the Peter's apartment is perfect for (a) people who are not as sensitive to heat and noise at night as we are, and (b) people who look for an authentic, local saint lucia experience.
Not much can be said about Peter and his place that hasn't already been said. It's everything you could ask for. He is generous with his time and checks in periodically to make sure you have a good idea of your plans for the day. He knows the island front and back and gives the best tips. We took his advice most of the time and really feel like we experienced the island to the fullest. His place is spacious and very private and the views you see in the picture are completely accurate. Also, Mocha checks in often and lets you rub her belly so that's a delight.
Also, more importantly, by staying with Peter you get a true feel of local life in Soufriere. He takes you around town, shows you the great places to eat and drink. We spent an evening drinking with him and some other (email hidden) overlooking the sunset.
This is the best place to stay if you don't want to go the "resort" route. Resorts get boring and you stay in one place. Here you get out and see the island for what it is, which is beautiful.
Thanks again, Peter! We'll be back!
We had a great stay in Peter's Apartment in Soufriere. The place is simple, but spacious and has everything you need. It is in a perfect location to explore the island either by foot around Soufriere or by bus/car to places further afield. Viewing the Petit Piton from the terrace is a big plus!
Peter showed us around town and is very knowledgeable about the island and is happy to advise on where to go and where to eat. Highly recommended.
