The Space

Soufriere is located on the south west coast of Saint Lucia, 50 minutes drive from Vieux Fort and 1 hour from Castries in the north. Soufriere has a laid back feel with little traffic

It is a great location for many of the island's most popular attractions which are - the Pitons, Sulphur Springs & Drive through Volcano, Diamond Falls & Botanical Gardens, marine park, several waterfalls and of course the rain forest.

The apartment is no more than a 10 minute walk to the center of town. The accommodations include a Bedroom with Double Bed, Bathroom with Shower and a spacious living room area and kitchenette. Bedding, Towels, Beach Towels etc are all provided. Wi-Fi internet access free of charge.

Public buses are available from both Castries and Vieux Fort to the center of Soufriere. However these buses do not run on public holidays or Sundays. I can also arrange a private taxi pickup for you. There are several rental car company's in Soufriere that you can use if you wish to hire a jeep for a day or a week just to see some more sites.

If wished, I will be happy to show you around the town of Soufriere so you can get your bearings to begin with!

The apartment is ideal for those looking to stay in Soufriere at an affordable price. Although you can see on the map where the apartment is, we are as the crow fly’s, 500 meters to the center of town and 250 meters to the closest beach. Soufriere has various local Bars and Restaurants as well as internationally renowned hotels just a short drive from the town. There are three small supermarkets, various clothes shops, banks which are open until 2pm, hardware and electrical shops as well. Have a (email hidden) book to give you a rough idea.

I am a professional photographer and have been in St Lucia for over twenty five years. I regularly take, or just inform, my guests about the sights of St Lucia whilst avoiding the large crowds. If you wish I am happy to take you on a “photographic tour” of the island.

  • This was our first Airbnb experience. From the start we were impressed with Peter's responsiveness to our questions (and we had quite a few!). He is committed to helping his guests have a positive experience. The pictures and descriptions of the apartment are accurate. There is no air conditioning, dishwasher, etc but the basics are there which is all you need to slow down and enjoy life in Soufriere.

Peter gave us a walking tour of the town upon arrival to help us acclimate (he does this for all of his guests). His love for the people, sights, sounds, flavor and overall energy of Soufriere was evident almost immediately and became an integral part of our experience. I feel like we would have missed so much of life in Soufriere if we had stayed in a resort instead of with Peter.

    Some of our highlights...
    - Mocha!
    - Eating rotis at Archies
    - Tet Paul Nature Trail (stunning views)
    - the veggie truck
    - watching the World Cup (email hidden) with Peter and his friends
    - reading our books at Hummingbird beach (right down the street)
    - Anse Chastanet beach (we hiked there and took a water taxi back on two consecutive days)
    - conversations over rum and cokes
    - soaking in the view of the town and the Pitons from the apartment terrace
    - lizards and tree frogs on the terrace
    - visiting the Botanical Gardens and Diamond Falls
    - meeting Trevor and our time spent riding with him; he shared so much about the island and plant life
    - conversations with Peter; we really enjoyed our time with him!
    - meeting and talking to the people of Soufriere
    - waking up to the relaxing sound of rain then marveling at how quickly the sky would clear up!

    Helpful tidbits:
-If you are traveling from the US, the outlets in the apartment are UK standard but there were 2 adapters behind the bed that we were able to charge our cellphones and laptop on.
    - It can be a little loud at night (music, dogs, etc). We enjoyed the sounds but if you are sensitive to noise you may want to bring ear plugs.
    - Just like many other places people may approach you to try to sell you things or ask for money. This happened a few times to us but all we had to say was "No thank you. Have a good night."
    - Peter has a guest book in the apartment that can offer more insight as to other guests' highlights while visiting.

  • My flight arrived quite late (8PM) in Castries, I had to take my rental car and cross the island to Soufriere to sleep for the night. Even if I contacted Peter before, I was too focused on the road and didn't see the house when I drove down to Soufrière. Fortunately, Peter was waiting for me with a torch in the dark. Thanks to him, I was able to find apartment easily, quickly put my stuff in the apartment and get some hours of sleep.

The next morning, Peter gave me a tour of town and showed me some great spot to photograph Pitons and gave me some good advices on what to do during my stay. Thanks to him, I (email hidden) Lucia, and could take good photos.

The apartment was very clean, the bedroom has a killer view of Piton when you wake up (best waking up ever!), and you can easily reach center city or main roads for Canaries/Castries or Jalousie/Vieux Fort. The terrace is very good to enjoy a good coffee cup in the morning!

Thanks again Peter for your kindness. I hope I'll be back! ;-)

  • Peter was a helpful and respectful host, ready to help and provide information whenever needed, but also concious about giving his hosts their space (the apartment is below his). He walked out to the village to show us around, it was very useful. We also had a very nice moment with him talking and sharing music (thanks for that!!). He also arranged a taxi for us. As said, ready to help whenever possible. He also treats his guests with a few basics in the fridge: a couple of beers, milk, cereal... that is nice :)
The apartment was what we expected and well reflected in the photos. It was simple, but it had all we need and we felt very well in it. The little terrace with the view to the Piton was probably my favorite spot in the place, we spent many ours there. The house is outside the village, by the road, but it is a 5 minute walk to the center of the village (very small).

  • It was a super nice appartment, very private, fantastic view and great cd collection we enjoyed every evening. The neighborhood is nice, authentic, super nice people, the real St Lucia. With the resort beaches just a watertaxi ride away its best of both worlds.

Our host Mocha was great, Peter too, introduced us to people in town, the veggie pizza bus, Trevor, all the nice sightseeing in the area. Amazing bbq on the road to the appartement and nice Appleton rum everywhere. Its a real gem this place!! I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for an authentic experience in the Carribean. Thank Mocha and Peter and also to your lovely talented family!

  • Our host Peter was wonderful. It was evident how much he cared about the wellbeing of his guests and showing them a positive experience in the town of Soufriere. He even gave us a walk around town to show us where to get groceries, good bars, and introduced us to folks in town. It has an amazing location - you can take a water taxi to the major hotels/best beaches Sugar Bay and Jade Mountain. Also close driving distance to the major site attractions such as Diamond Falls, Sulpher Springs. We rented a car which was helpful to do day trips but Peter can also recommend a taxi. Everywhere we went we mentioned we were Peter's guests and on our honeymoon and received excellent customer service. It made our stay very special! He also has a very cute dog named Mocha :)

  • Peter is a great host; knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and available pretty much whenever you need him. When we arrived Peter gave a guided walk around Soufriere showing us the various places to eat, shop, have a drink, find an ATM, etc leaving us feeling confident about venturing into the town on our own which we did often. We waited until we arrived to arrange our activities and this worked out very well. Peter's suggestions and assistance made planning/arranging very simple and less costly than we expected. Peter's help started even before we left Canada, answering email questions I had that were specific to his apartment, communications in the area, etc.

We had Trevor, the taxi driver Peter recommended, pick us up at the airport and found him a polite, skilled, safe driver, familiar with whatever area we were in and ready and willing to stop for a photo whenever we wanted as well as suggesting areas we might want to enjoy the view or take a picture from . Trevor was so affordable and helpful we used him for all the taxi trips my wife and I took and to go back to the airport. When we needed a van for a larger group of friends to take a day trip, Trevor found Mc Garvin for us and his choice couldn't have been better! We highly recommend Trevor, for a safe, affordable, accomodating taxi driver!

The patio of Peter's apartment is the perfect place to relax with a book, coffee or Piton (the local beer I immediately acquired a taste for), enjoy the view or visit with Peter and his dog Mocha (who loved the cheese "treats" my wife had available each morning at breakfast). It provided some respite from the hot daytime temperatures as we enjoyed the cooler morning and evening temperatures and breeze.

The apartment is located in an excellent spot having a great view yet within easy walking distance of all the local stores, bars and the ocean. It is quite simple but had all the basics - everything needed including a good Wi-Fi connection. As other quests have mentioned all local "activities" can be readily heard; it can be noisy at night (tree frogs, roosters crowing, music until 2 am at the local bars, dogs barking in town); however, I slept well and my wife solved the problem with a set of earplugs.

I highly recommend Peter's apartment and all that goes with it, starting with Peter's assistance, for a truly authentic Saint Lucian experience.

  • This apartment was lovely! The view from the patio and bedroom window simply cannot be beat, and it is just a few minutes from more restaurants and bars than you'll have time to try during your stay.

As everyone has mentioned, Peter is an excellent host and can help you book anything you like and find the best price, so I recommend waiting until you get to the apartment to book any tours or activities.

His taxi driver Trevor is a gem, and a great choice if you suffer from motion sickness on curvy roads as he drives very slowly and safely. We enjoyed Ocean King for our water taxi service as well.

The two closest "resort-style" beaches (both with great snorkeling!) are Anse Chastanet/Jade Mountain, the the north, and Sugar Beach, to the south. If you want to sit for a few hours and have some drinks with your feet in the sand, or do a water sport, we recommend both.

  • We spent 9 days in Peters appartement and had a very nice time.
As everybody mentioned before, Peter is a very friendly, helpful guy,
who gave us a lot of useful informations about Soufriere, the locals and the island
hardly to find in tourist guides. He offered us a tour through town on our first day which was a good start.
The apartment is spacious with everthing we needed to feel comfortable,
there is even a stereo with a lot of CDs, books about plants and maritime life, but best of all is the terrace, where we spent some evenings, enjoying the view over town, Ption and sea, wondering about the noise mixture that frogs, dogs and cocks can make.
You'll probably know about the 'points of interest' around Soufriere, but also
worth to mention is Malgretout beach at the foot of Petit Piton, easy to
find if you don't mind walking a bit and, during the week, very quiet, with a quite nice underwater world for snorkeling.

  • We had a fantastic stay with Peter only a couple of weeks ago, wish we were still there! Peter’s place is charming - fabulous views of the Petit Piton from the balcony where we shared many coffees, wine/beers and chats with Peter, and a beautiful tropical garden filled with all sorts of flowers and fruit trees. Peter was very generous with his time, and made a lot of effort to introduce us to his many friends in town, including Donny, Scott and Charles (mention should probably also go to Pablo ;) ), and we had great fun and lots of interesting chats getting to know them all. Peter and Donny also took us on a mini road trip to Gros Islet after we’d left to try out their favourite bar which was lovely of them - we left feeling as though we’d made some great friends and (email hidden) Lucian experience rather than being holed up in an impersonal hotel somewhere! Peter and his friends were also really helpful in terms of working out the best touristy things to do (we managed to climb the Gros Piton, though didn’t quite get to the Petit Piton and the Edmund Forest Reserve so that will have to be for our next trip!). Peter’s taxi driver Trevor is also a lovely guy - his fares were excellent value and he always took the time to point out the various fruits and flowers that you pass along the way. Peter’s place is very close to town - only a 7-10 minute walk in, and very close to the nearest beach too. We’d definitely recommend Hummingbird Restaurant for a nice meal out - the service was exceptional and the meals were delicious. Overall, a fabulous and very genuine experience - we’ll definitely be back :)

  • We spent a week at Peter's apartment, which was the lower floor of his house. It was a great place for us and Peter was a great host. The apartment is simple, with a basic shower, bed, open area and kitchenette. This is just what we wanted. We cooked breakfast or ate cereal in the morning then walked 5 minutes to beach or 10 minutes into town.

We really loved living in the village like this because you could hear, smell and feel the sites and sounds of daily living. Depending on your disposition, one could say it was noisy...the dogs and roosters barked and crowed (and music played) at night, people sang at church service on Sunday morning, the horn of the Conch shell sounded off when fish was for sale in a wheel barrow...but as others have said in reviews for Peters place... we felt like it added to charm. You really got a feel for what life is like there and we preferred that to being in a resort with people like us being served by locals - though that is okay too.

My biggest worry was sleeping at night. I am a high maintenance and light sleeper and move around a lot. I like a large firm bed, none of which could be used to describe this bed. But I was comfortable and slept ok.

People do try and sell their wares or services but no one was so forceful that we felt uncomfortable. We politely said no and moved on and after saying we were staying with Peter and after being there several days, people seemed to treat you differently.

Peter was always available and checked in on us in the morning and afternoon and advised us well. We often ran into him in town in the evening. Many travelers seem to do much more around the island than we did. We got in a car once during our 7 day stay (to go to Mango Tree Restaurant). We walked or took a water taxi everywhere else - Sugar Beach, Anse Chastenet, sunset cruise, whale watching, snorkeling. Many coral reefs are a water taxi ride away (I went to five). A lot of action happens right out of Soufriere.

We probably would have enjoyed a resort on the beach. That certainly has its own charm. But we loved this modest place with a great view on the edge of town. If our review or that of the 46 people before us resonate with you, then this is your place!

    Steve Harris and Kristine Martin.
