Susan was great to deal with! She left some great guide books that we used extensively. Her place is exactly as described and neighborhood is clean, safe, quiet, convenient and very pretty.
Perfect! This rental could not have been better, and I would definitely stay here again given the chance. Communication with the host was great. The location was amazing, just across the road from a fantastic beach full of locals, with beautiful colors in the water, daily sea turtle sightings, white sand, facilities (not that you need them because your house is literally across the street).
The apartment itself was thoughtfully designed, with wonderful cooling sea breezes and small touches like towel hooks everywhere you want them, and a kids' height shower! We had a four year old with us, and she loved the shower, the beach toys, the kids' books, and the beach. The apartment was also very airy and large with high ceilings and plenty of places to sit and watch the outstanding sunset.
I can't imagine finding a better rental in Kona. We didn't have a car for the first few days, and the trolley made it easy enough to get into town, although it doesn't run often. Once we had a car the location was perfect for exploring the areas both south and north of Kona, as well as in the nearby hills.
We didn't want to leave!
We stayed ten days at Susan's lovely place across the street from the beach. We loved the view of the ocean and spend a lot of time on the porch enjoying the waves and sky. The home is very comfortable and functional for a family with a great kitchen and places to hang out. Susan was home and she helped us with any question or need. We all enjoyed our stay immensely.
Perfection perfection perfection. We were so sad to leave the house! Other reviewers have covered a lot, so I'll just cover children/family living-specific items.
1.) Location: Beach across the street priceless for family to go to when baby had to nap in the house, 5 minutes drive from one of the absolutely best snorkeling beaches on Big Island (Kahalu'u Bay), easy drive to Long Drugs and groceries.
2.) Kids' and Baby Gear: OK, this house doesn't just have "some" kids' toys and gear. It has 5 big bins worth of beach toys for toddlers to big kids, multiple boogie boards, multiple floaties, noodles, snorkeling gear, 3 or 4 strollers, a beautiful full-sized quality crib and mattress (with many crib sheets, etc), a great high chair… well, you need to bring almost nothing for the little ones.
3.) Other Gear and Items: Very useful were also the 4-5 small and large coolers available for use for all-day beach trips. And, the house is fully and plentifully packed with cooking tools, appliances, and condiments (and as our family is one of cooks, we made a lot of food!). Also a nice little hanging chair rocker on the lanai to rock a baby to sleep while watching the sunrise (since our California baby woke up regularly at 4:30 in the morning, egads!)
4.) Good wifi
5.) Thank goodness for AC available in the bedrooms. Many fans available throughout the rest of the house as it can certainly warm up.
Susan greeted us upon arriving at her vacation home and showed us around. The home had absolutely everything you could need for a wonderful stay from condiments to more than enough towels. The home is clean and well kept with a amazing view. We stayed for 11 nights and saw whales from our lanai everyday. We enjoying watching dolphins and surfers from our lanai as well. The home had everything we could want for our trips across the street to the beautiful beach. We had a amazing time in this home.
Susan is an exceptional host. We felt welcome the moment we arrived.
She checked in with us throughout the week to make sure we didn't
need anything. And she has great suggestions for places to eat and
The place is huge! The pictures don't do it justice. And it's stocked to the hilt! There was nothing we wished we had that wasn't there. The beach accessories available for use were also a huge bonus: snorkel gear, beach toys, coolers, chairs, umbrellas, etc. They have it all.
And having use of a washer and dryer, three actually, was really handy.
We loved the location. Easy access to down town, beaches and snorkeling. Although the beach across the street didn't have much sand due to storms, it was still great for boogie boarding and hanging out. We even saw sea turtles there.
We would definitely stay there again! Hopefully sooner rather than later! :)
This is a beautiful place to stay in a great location. Susan the host is very helpful, and the house is fully stocked with pots & pans, some cooking essentials, and beach gear including life jackets, beach mats, some snorkel gear, beach umbrellas, beach toys, coolers, and more. The house is bigger than it looks in the photos, with lots of room for a big group without feeling crowded. I also appreciated all of the kid friendly features; it has a crib, high chair, strollers, and child gates at the stairs. The house has a great view of Magic Sands Beach. The only drawback to this location is that the sand washes away from the beach in the winter, which leaves the shore too rocky and rough for kids to play in the water there. (Adults can still enjoy swimming and snorkeling without the sand.) But there are lots of beautiful beaches not too far away, and it is very convenient to be located so close to shops and restaurants in Kailua. We had a wonderful stay, and I would highly recommend this rental to anyone.

About the Host, Susan
After living in Seattle for the past 20 years, I decided to purchase a house in Hawaii. I spend about half of my time between Seattle and Hawaii and look forward to moving to Kona full time at some point. In the meantime, I've decided to open my home to Airbnb travelers.
I love hosting families looking for a relaxing oasis that have a sense of adventure!
