Guest Room in St Roch w/BIKES!

House - Private room · Marigny St, New Orleans, LA 70117, United States

Cute and quirky bedroom in jazz musicians traditional shotgun home in classic New Orleans neighborhood. Complimentary bicycles and locks included with stay!

The Space

Hi! We are Megan and Brandon! We're a couple of working jazz musicians offering you one of our two spare bedrooms in our funky, but down-to-Earth 2,000 sq ft, 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom traditional New Orleans shotgun-style home in the St. Roch (pronounced "Saint Rock") neighborhood.

We offer our extra bicycles and individual bike locks to our guests as a courtesy. They are your typical street cruisers - nothing fancy, but they work!

Your bedroom is a spacious walk-through room in our turn-of-the-century shot-gun home. It features an antique 1920's arts and crafts style bed (that belonged to Megan's great-grandmother), a nightstand with drawers, an antique carved-wood chair, a matching vanity with mirrors and a large dressing mirror.

A shot-gun house is a family-style home that has no hallways - the rooms are the halls. Please see our photos for a lay-out drawing. Your room has doors, and you will have privacy, but the house is a walk-through, so if total privacy is an issue, this may not be the best house for you.

We live in the St Roch neighborhood - an up-and-coming area less than a 10 minute walk to the French Quarter and half a block from the Marigny (pronounced MARY-knee), with the Bywater neighborhood just a half mile away. A lot of local artists, musicians and bohemian-types live nearby as well as old New Orleans Creole families. The neighborhood is a true New Orleans working-class neighborhood.

Our no-frills house features all the comforts of home including:

- WIFI INTERNET - free!!

- BICYCLES - You can use our spare bikes and locks! Free!! (Usually costs $20/day to rent each bike at a local company - so this is a great added perk!)

- TRANSPORTATION - While we are very close to anything you might want to walk to, we are also half a block to the bus stop and we can sometimes give you a ride if you need one!

- CENTRAL HEAT AND AIR CONDITIONING - this is a big deal around New Orleans. Lots of houses have window units that are full of mold and simply do not do the trick on super hot days. Our house is always temperature perfect inside!

- A FULLY EQUIPPED KITCHEN - toaster, microwave, coffee maker, french press, gas stove and oven, dishes, etc. if you want to make dinner instead of going out! We also have a full selection of spices and things for your cooking needs.

- LAUNDRY ROOM & SUPPLIES - soap, iron, ironing board, etc. (Help yourself - its there for your use! No extra charge, so you don't have to worry about lugging your laundry around with a pocket full of quarters!)

- ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM - including a TV (not LCD, but it works fine), VCR, DVD, and a record player!

- SECURE PARKING - gated and locked private parking alongside the house large enough for a full sized bus!

- LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! All this within walking distance to the French Quarter (about a 10 minute walk away), Frenchmen Street (5 minute walk), The Marigny (half a block), Bywater (six blocks) and local nightlife hotspots on St Claude (half a block!).

- HOSTS WITH THE MOSTS - Two very friendly and knowledgeable hosts (if I do say so myself.. ahem.. but check out our reviews! )

Guest Access

Guests will have access to the whole house, yard and everything. We treat our guests like long-lost friends.

Interaction with Guests

We will interact with our guests as much or as little as they want. We try to respond according to the level of interaction desired by the guest. We are typically very busy, but are always available for questions and advice about where to go in the city.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is down to earth, friendly, non-pretentious and genuine. It is not fancy or imposing in the least. As a working class neighborhood, you can expect to get to know your neighbors and people going down the street.

Getting around

New Orleans is a very walkable town since it is very flat. We offer bikes to our guests, as well, and there is a bus stop half a block away for longer trips in the city.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Megan was on the front porch to greet us as we arrived! A very nice touch.

They had several bikes for us to choose from, mostly single speed cruisers and in good condition. Since New Orleans is flat, they worked just fine for our 16 mile tour around town. We stayed only the one night, but wish we could have stayed longer. The bed was good, the kitchen and bath comfortable, and it all felt "just like home".

We went to the local dine and dance where Brandon was performing for Sunday brunch, and later took Megan's advice on a good place for dinner about 8 blocks away near the French Quarter. Both were truly wonderful experiences. We strongly suggest you ask for -- and take -- her recommendations.

Megan and Brandon are warm and interesting people; we enjoyed our visit with them.

  • Megan and Brandon were very hospitable hosts! The accommodations were comfortable. We were really excited about the bike availability, but then ended up walking everywhere instead. It was great to have that option available though. Shotgun housing was very new to us, so it made for an unique experience of shared space. Having the kitchen available for use was quite convenient as well. We only had a few occasions to talk with M&B, so didn't get to know them very well, but we definitely walked as much as we could of New Orleans from their place, a really convenient location! We also watched Brandon with his band perform on nearby Frenchman street, which was great. Overall, we had a great time. Thanks M&B for providing a homey environment off the direct tourist path.

  • What a great place to stay! Megan and Brandon were excellent hosts in every way and recommended awesome things to do, restaurants, etc in the area. They are super generous and cool and have neat stories to tell. The shotgun-style house thing was not a problem. Everyone was respectful of our privacy. The house is super awesome with lots of art and nick-nacks and books and things to see. The place is stumbling distance to Frenchman Street, Bourbon Street, etc, while being in a somewhat quieter area. They have BIKES to use and that is awesome. NOLA is totally a bikeable city -- so flat -- so having bikes to use was really great. Overall an awesome experience! Totally staying here on our next trip through.

  • This is definitely the way to stay in New Orleans! It was like staying with old friends the entire time. Megan and Brandon (even their friends) were so welcoming and accommodating in every way. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a truly immersive experience in NOLA where they can kick back, be themselves and learn about this beautiful city from people that actually breathe life into it (and not a hotel brochure).

  • I enjoyed my stay at Megan's place. Nice house and very comfortable. They borrow their bikes and give you suggestions about local places to eat drink and visit. The house is well situated. I would return to Megan's house!!!

    Response from Megan & Brandon:

Richard was unable to stay with us at the last minute due to a car accident. We hope to meet him next time he comes through New Orleans

  • Wow, Brandon and Megan are some of the coolest people I've met. Had such a great time on my short trip to New Orleans, will be back and will definitely be booking with them again when I return.

  • I spent a week in New Orleans for a medical conference. It was a pleasant walk or bike ride to the convention center (about 30 minutes). The room was comfortable and despite the shotgun arrangement of the house it was never awkward or uncomfortable.

I highly recommend them as hosts.

  • Really great hosts! They live in a cute shotgun house with a ton of character. The hosts themselves are characters- they love music and to laugh and be really friendly. I am a single girl and felt safe in their housed neighborhood and walking home at night as they live one block from the main street (St Claudes) and there is a bar within a stones throw open at night with activity, but I would have been wary staying any more blocks north (there are a lot of options in that area for air bnb).

  • Great place and great people! Super comfy bed, happy welcoming smiles and 2 people who love sharing their fantastic city. They set us up perfectly for our stay - even though we could only stay the one night with them.

Brandon, who is a born and raised New Orleanian, plays the upright and electric bass, guitar, trumpet and sousaphone. Megan plays the trumpet and accordion. Megan currently plays with The Pair-a-Dice Tumblers, Ninth Ward Marching Band, and the Good Children Marching Band. She has toured with Izzy Cox and Hank Williams 3, played with Billy Pittman and Jimmy Vaughn and has shared the bill with The Legendary Shack Shakers, Michael Graves from The Misfits, Mr. Lewis and the Funeral Five, Charlie Louvin of the Louvin Brothers, and many more. Brandon plays with The Some Like It Hot Jazz Band, Dana Abbott, New Orleans Rhythm Devils, Black Dragons, The Pair-a-Dice Tumblers and the Ninth Ward Marching Band. He has played with hundreds of bands in the New Orleans area since he started playing over twenty years ago. He has played Jazz Fest more than fourteen times with his father, former Preservation Hall band leader and world-famous trumpet player Wendell Brunious. Some of our favorite things include: Steve Martin movies, R. Crumb comics, 1930's jazz standards, Frank Zappa, Nikola Tesla, vintage RVs, and found art.
