A tranquil and rustic experience secluded yet easily accessible on a hillside below the stunning Cerrito Blanco in Abiquiu. This large, 24-foot yurt makes the perfect weekend or week-long getaway for a couple or family looking for a unique experience. Sip your coffee (an organic medium roast is provided) on the deck, practice yoga, meditate, read/write, gaze up at the Milky Way, bird watch and take in the beauty of the Chama River Valley, right in the heart of Tewa country!

***2022 Update! The yurt sustained some damage in a recent wind storm. We have taken the opportunity to improve the structure by adding some interior walls, insulation and additional electrical outlets. We are working on adding new photos of the upgrade!

We are in the process of adding a small kitchenette inside the yurt, as well as a brand new bathroom on the deck, making this space more accessible for folks with mobility issues. Please know that if you are booking for 2022 summer and beyond, you may be staying in the new and improved set up with the kitchen inside the yurt and the new bathroom on the yurt deck!

T H E S E T T I N G
Step outside and you’re in a high desert paradise, at 6,000 feet elevation in the Chama River Valley. Step inside the Yurt and marvel at the Central Asian decor, craftsman style with stunning woodwork details.
There is a bright & equipped kitchen, bathroom with European-style shower, indoor seating area with a futon and breakfast bar, as well as a covered outdoor patio for enjoying dinner on warm summer nights. The Annex is located about 50 steps down a path (outside) from the Yurt. You will have to walk down the path from the Yurt to use the bathroom or kitchen. *please note the entire space - Yurt & Annex - are completely private with their own entrance. Though the Annex is in the main building on the property, there are no shared spaces.

S L E E P I N G A R R A N G E M E N T S
The yurt has a brand new Queen memory foam mattress as of January 2020, a twin bed and a comfortable couch for another to sleep. In the main building (50 steps outside down a path) is another full size futon with a comfortable memory foam topper. The Yurt can accommodate 4 people comfortably. The Annex can accommodate 1-2 people.

A R U S T I C E X P E R I E N C E
*This is a rustic experience and not ideal for guests with mobility issues or guests who are uncomfortable with keeping a wood burning stove going for heat in the middle of the night during colder months (November-March).*

Why we call this a "Rustic" experience:

1. You will have to walk outside about 50 steps between the Annex (Kitchen/Bathroom space) up to the Yurt. We are in the high desert, at 6,000 ft elevation. Bring slippers and a jacket and expect chilly weather at night! We will provide headlamps.

2. We have a rural septic system. All toilet paper must be discarded in the covered bin provided. Absolutely NO urinating on the property anywhere other than the toilet. If you have accessibility issues and cannot make it 50 steps down the pathway to the bathroom, please book other accommodations. We host over 200 guests per year and cannot clean up urine after each one. If you do urinate outside the yurt anywhere, we will charge you an additional $50 cleaning fee.

3. The shower is a standing, "in-bathroom" European style shower -- no doors or tub. A squeegee is provided to clear excess water into the drain after showering.

4. The Yurt can run hot in the summer months, especially June, July and August. Windows can be opened to provide more ventilation, but please be aware that in the heat of the day (between 12-5pm) it can get very warm in there. The Annex does have a futon couch and a very nice outdoor patio that gets great ventilation during the day, and is a great place to hang out.

5. In colder months (October-April), most guests will heat the yurt with the wood burning stove. We provide wood and kindling throughout your stay, however you'll be required to feed the fire hourly throughout the night to keep warm and cozy. We also provide space heaters to keep the chill off, if you prefer not to wake up and stoke the fire throughout the night, however it will be cold with just a space heater, especially on nights with below-freezing temperatures. Again, this is rustic and part of the experience. Most of our guests are happy to feed the fire. If you are highly sensitive to or uncomfortable with the cold, please consider booking the Yurt at a warmer time of year (May-September), or consider sleeping in the Annex -- a smaller space with a space heater that is much more efficient. Please let us know if you intend to do so, so we can make the bed there for you.

6. Rural living is rustic! There is wind! And dust! And sometimes small critters! We pride ourselves in taking great care of our guests, but if you're looking for a five star resort type of experience, this might not be the best place for you.

Most of our guests leave with a very memorable experience, and many return! If there is anything we can do to make your stay extra special, please let us know.

The yurt is located less than 2 miles from the beautiful sandstone formations of Plaza Blanca & Dar Al Islam (the largest adobe structure in North America!), one of Georgia O'Keeffe's favorite painting locations. We are also a short 3 minute drive to Abiquiu Pueblo & Georgia O'Keeffe's home/studio, 6 miles from stunning Abiquiu Lake, 12 miles from Ghost Ranch, and 30 miles from Ojo Caliente where you can take a relaxing soak in the healing mineral springs. Nearby hikes take you off the beaten path, up to petroglyphs and 1,000 year old archeological sites. Abiquiu is a wonderful place in itself, and this sweet, truly unique yurt makes a great home base for some memorable adventures.

If you're planning to cook a lot during your stay, we recommend picking up groceries in Santa Fe or Taos. Bode's General Store (1.5 miles away) is pricey but well stocked.

There are just a few restaurants in Abiquiu. Mamacita's Pizzeria (check current days/hours of operation ahead!), Bode's General Store has a deli with takeout and dine-in options, and the Abiquiu Inn has a great restaurant. A 20 minute drive to El Rito and you can experience a classic New Mexican family restaurant, El Farolito. Check the current hours and be sure to bring cash.

PANDEMIC NOTICE
We are not currently interacting with guests at this time as we have an infant and want to ensure everyone’s safety. We will mask if we need to meet face to face for any reason.

Check in time is any time after 3pm. All check ins will be self-check in (please consult the personal message you receive with directions before you arrive).

Check out is any time before 11am.

Check in/out times are not flexible at this time due to the heightened cleaning procedures now required by Airbnb during the pandemic.

We *may* be able to offer self-guided kayak tours on Abiquiu Lake (up to 2 people).

The price is $25/hour per kayak . We transport the kayaks to Abiquiu Lake (you meet us there), we drop them in, see you off and we'll come back for the kayaks at a pre-determined time. Most folks enjoy 2-3 hours on the lake. We do recommend going early as the wind tends to be pick up in the afternoon. Kayaking is only available between April-August, though sometimes we can have spells of nice, warm weather in March or September, too. Please let us know approximately one to two weeks before your check in that you're interested in kayaking. We may or may not be available to accommodate you based on our work schedules.

We'll be happy to share our knowledge of local hiking trails as well.

We prefer to give guests their privacy as this is a very quiet & sacred place, but we live next door if you need anything or have an emergency.
