Well, unfortunately this was a very bad airbnb experience. In the past my mother and I have had very good luck staying with unreviewed hosts, but as chance would dictate: they can't all be gems.
Upon walking into the apartment we were affronted with an odd smell that came from food which had been left in the refrigerator. There was hair in the bathroom sink, the shower was grimy, the floor had other people's hair and dust and what looked like dog hair all around the edges and when I set my black t-shirt on the counter, it came up with a film of dust. But, whatever, we know how to clean, only all the cleaning sponges looked atrocious, even the ones for the dishes, and there were no cloths to clean with, or linens at all...period. Literally, there was one slightly soiled tea towel for the entire apartment. This means, no sheets, no pillow cases, no hand towels, beach towels, nothing. We chalked this up to a misunderstanding and contacted our host; this is where the real problem started. No assistance was offered to help solve the issue. We were made to feel like we were inconveniencing him by asking for this basic necessity. We had one blanket for three people and two uncovered pillows. He said that all his past guests had been informed to bring their own linens and he hoped it wouldn't be a problem for us. However, he knew we were foreign travelers coming for a short stay and accepted yet our reservation without telling us this and became irritated when we expressed our discomfort with the situation.
Future guests should also be aware that there is no cross ventilation in the apartment, neither fan nor ac. The water heater in the bathroom heats the small space very quickly and on warm summer days it can be uncomfortable. The balcony is over a fairly busy street and half of the mornings we were woken up by semi-trucks making deliveries below our window. The view is, on the other hand, very pretty and quaint.
The oddest thing of all was the clock. For some reason our host had deemed in necessary to take the batteries out.
In the end my family and I did have a nice stay. Banyuls-sur-mer is a lovely town and the location of the apartment was close to wonderful places to hike and swim. I just wish our host had been more hospitable.
