The Wine Country Airplane House

House - Entire home/apt · Fitzpatrick Ln, Occidental, CA 95465, United States

The Space

Welcome to your dog-friendly, secluded get-away home situated on 15 plus acres in the hills of West Sonoma County, California. And YES, that is really a genuine piece of the old Golden Gate Bridge in front of the house!

Wine lovers paradise! We are a scenic 20 to 30 minute drive from many world class wineries that are considered the best wineries in Sonoma County located along the Russian River Valley. We often have coupons for free tasting at some of the local wineries as well.

Bicyclers welcome! Several major bike races are held here every year including the Tour de California in May and the Gran Fondo in October!

The Airplane House can comfortably sleep 6 adults (3 couples, 2 people per bed). There is a queen size bed in the master bedroom on the main floor, a queen size bed in the loft and the leather couch in the great room on the main floor folds out into a queen size bed.

As soon as we receive confirmation that you have booked, we will send explicit directions. During prohibition, the remote canyons and forests in our area were natural places for people to set up stills. The surrounding roads provided access to the stills and to the purveyors of illegal alcohol, so our lane was closed off and to this day has not been re-opened as a through road for the public. Just a bit of history for you.

The Wine Country Airplane House is approximately 65 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge and 30 minutes away from the Russian River Wine Valley. This is the perfect place for you to relax with family, friends and dogs, unwind, and leave your worries behind. We respectfully request that you do not bring pit bulls or other agressive or fighting dogs to our home!

This is a unique, three story 2200 sq. ft. home surrounded by cultivated gardens, wooded areas and a pond. Please note a real, authentic piece of the Golden Gate Bridge outside the front entrance! Spectacular views of the Bodega Valley as well as Bodega Bay, (just a short scenic 30 minute drive away) and the sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean, Point Reyes, and on very clear days, you will catch a glimpse of the Farallon Islands.

On the main floor there is a large living area with ample seating for friends and family. The master bedroom and the bathroom are also located on the main floor. There is an electric fireplace. Sorry, Sonoma County would not let us add a wood burning stove!

The upper floor is actually a sleeping loft with a queen size bed and a couch area where you can lounge around enjoying a good book.

The bottom floor features a large dining area, and a full size, fully equipped kitchen to include good quality knives with a sharpening tool, and a 2ft x 2ft built in butcher block cutting board. There is also an area for working out including a treadmill and a weight bench and weights. The lower level also has padded bench seats for extra lounging space. There is a small laundry room with full size washer and dryer located off of the kitchen area.

There are a number of activities in and around the Airplane House for you to enjoy should you want to venture out. Located on our property, there is a small grove of redwoods with a rhodedendron garden. We also have a number of sculptures in the garden areas on the property, so take a walk and enjoy!

A short 1 ½ mile walk will take you to an amazing grove of old growth redwoods. You will find several easy hiking trails where you can view some of the largest redwood trees in Sonoma County.

The BEST times to visit our wineries are between November and March when you can avoid the crowds AND you may even be able to talk to some of the wine makers hanging around the tasting rooms!

  • The airplane house is a very relaxing place to stay and a great escape from San Francisco. The house is decorated nicely and had plenty of room. Loved the spiral staircases!

  • The grounds were stunning and incredibly peaceful. The house was clean and well furnished and the host was friendly and accommodating.

That said, the house certainly has a few quirks with its layout that make it a bit uncomfortable. For example, the upstairs queen bed loft offers no privacy (you cannot change without everyone in the living room seeing you). There is no heating vent in the "real" bedroom so it was quite cold. The kitchen was missing some key cooking tools like a full-sized cutting board and sharp knives. Because of the loft layout, noise travels and someone in the upstairs loft can hear everything that happens in the kitchen down below. Based on the layout, I think this house is better for one family and not 2 couples.

  • What more to say that hasn't been said already? This place is incredible and I can't wait to go back. The apples in the orchard were ripe, which made for a nice surprise! Best kept California secret

  • Paradise!!!
We had a extraordinary work-vacation. The Air Plane House is situated in a enchanting, old growth, redwood forest, with a beautiful, view of the Pacific Ocean. Colorful gardens, pine, forests, and abundant wildlife.
The Airplane House is equipped with everything one would need to have a relaxing, peaceful, stay in a mountaintop paradise.
The home sleeps 2 couples comfortably, with an extra pull out couch. It has a spacious living room and dinning room, with beautiful art decorating the the walls, thanks to Lynda's artistic touch. At the front, side and off the living room, are private decks with colorful gardens that surround the house.
Just a short drive to a wine, connoisseurs paradise are rolling hills with vIneyards conducive to afternoon wine tasting, at lovely chateaus.
For the nature lovers there are, nearby hiking trails that wind through the enchanting redwood forests.
We, my family and business partners, were totally taken care of by our lovely host, Lynda, whom made us feel welcome and totally taken care of.
Much to our delight we found a cold bottle of champagne in the frig. and delicious banana coconut, muffins and coffee for the morning to start the first day of our trip in West Sonoma County, just an hour north of San Fransisco.
    What more can I say,
Thank You, Thank you Lynda..... and as the saying goes ....
    We'll BE BACK!!!!
    Hopefully sooner than later.

  • This gorgeous open space house is situated on the edge of a big redwood forest with a view that goes on for miles out toward the ocean. The grounds are beautiful, pond, art, sculpture, gardens, redwoods, etc. Lynda is generous and so helpful and we were totally taken care of. We feel so lucky to have found such an amazing place... the entrance road is long and winding through giant trees, up and down hills, so try to drive in before dark to see the beauty. We paid to see the redwoods at Muir Woods Monument park two hours away. But the redwoods here are better. The local town has great restaurants and a few nice shops, including a good health food store. Breakfast at Howard Station Cafe is extraordinary including the healthy smoothies and the best Eggs Benedict in CA. We drove all through the Napa Valley using this house as our base... lucky us.

  • The house was beautiful and the area is just lovely! I hadn't realized there was a pond and green space just outside the front door. Our team came here for a work retreat and found the living room and big table downstairs perfect for collaborating together. Lynda met with us the first day and was really sweet - bringing delicious muffins and champagne!

  • We loved our stay at the Airplane house! It is located in a secluded, woodsy area just a short drive from downtown Occidental, perfect for a relaxing, quiet getaway. We could have spent an entire weekend just enjoying the property with its pond, orchard, great views, and more. The house was also close to some great wineries and scenic drives.

Lynda was incredibly helpful throughout our whole stay and set us up with recommendations for things to do and tasting coupons. She even left us a bottle of champagne and delicious muffins for breakfast! The house itself was very clean, spacious, and comfortable. We cooked all our meals in the house and got to enjoy them outside on one of the home’s many decks. My boyfriend and I spend a lot of time traveling CA and this was one of our favorite stays yet. Highly recommended - we can’t wait to go back!

  • Driving a few short miles outside of Occidental, through redwood trees and vineyards, was a delight to reach the airplane house. Set on a beautiful property with lush landscaping, a pond, a garden with sculptures, and great views, the house was clean, well appointed with nice furniture, a well stocked kitchen with lovely dishes and glasses, a bottle of champagne and muffins to welcome us. The beds and linens, and towels were all great. Lots of room and artwork in the home. I would advise however if one has mobility problems, that the one bath is on the main level (but so is the master bedroom), but the kitchen and the extra bedroom in the loft area upstairs must be reached by spiral staircases. It wasn't a problem for us, but perhaps it isn't so good for some. Nice outside deck areas too with seating and tables and gorgeous views of the trees. Comfortable wonderful dining area for sharing dinners together. We cooked there, as Occidental closes it's restaurant options kind of early. We brought wine and had some great dinners together- the 5 of us. There is room for more to sleep, but keep in mind there is one full bath. Linda met us and explained about the house..she's very nice, kind, cheerful and very responsive- lives nearby in another house on the property and is available by phone with any questions. Oh, and nearby, a mile or so walk, is an amazing easy to walk level redwood forest! It was magical! We loved going there! Thanks for the suggestion Linda!

  • We loved our stay at the Airplane House and would love to stay there again. The incredible views and tranquility of this sprawling property have to be seen to be believed. So much so that we looked forward to waking up early every morning just to catch the morning marine layer hover above the lush hillsides looking west to the ocean. The town of Occidental is very charming and this gem of a property is located deep in the woods so if you're looking for peace, tranquility and gorgeous views this is the place for you.

The house itself is beautiful and comfortable. We slept comfortably and made ample use of the downstairs kitchen and outdoor patio. Markets are close by, not only in Occidental but nearby in Sebastapol, so you could easily hole up on this property and never leave the house if you want a truly relaxing and woodsy experience. We almost didn't want to leave the house it was so nice and comfortable but we had wine to taste! Some of the best wineries for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are in Russian River and Dry Creek and the Airplane House is only about a 20 min drive to some great ones. Leave the Sonoma and Napa wineries to the wine snobs and bachelorette parties. Russian River is where you wanna be.

  • Our family had a wonderful vacation at the Wine Country Airplane House this summer. The grounds were beautiful with flowers in full bloom and statues throughout the gardens and property. The view from the windows and balcony were amazing! Lynda was very kind and welcoming. We were concerned about our children in her home but she put us to ease at once.

The Airplane house had just the right amount of decor without us worrying about breaking something. The stained glass window art from the Master bedroom and all of the stained glass windows throughout the home were whimsical and fun. The linens were not only pretty but super comfortable. All five kids had such a good time exploring the grounds and walking through the garden. They are still talking about how this was the best vacation ever!

We were worried about the drive getting in out of the property when we wanted to go touring but it really was a nice drive and not too long. The trees all around and the scenery helped us unwind from a day of activities. We just hope to spend another week there in the future! Thank you Lynda!
