We are one of the best reviewed guesthouses in Johannesburg and you will love your stay with us !

We are a charming, historic,. 7 - bedroomed house run by a passionate owner and team who take great pride in providing personal service. If you require more than one room, please let us know through Airbnb. The rates listed are per room!

We are a few minutes drive to the Rosebank Gautrain station ( which goes to the Airport ) and we are close to Sandton and Rosebank and the upmarket Melrose Arch.

Uxolo Guesthouse is a very historic victorian era home that was one of the first houses in the neighborhood. Local legend has it that it was used as a "safe house" by members of the Struggle in Former President Nelson Mandela's early years . We have captured this element of the history in our guesthouse and encourage you to come explore it with us! Our rooms comfortably accommodate one or two people but we can accommodate families . Please let us know what your needs are, we will do our best to meet them.

The Neighborhood

The area is charming , quiet and central. and VERY historic, with history pertaining to former President Nelson Mandela's early years. In 1963 he lived and worked in the house across the road from the guesthouse and his friends all lived in the houses in the surrounding streets. Many of stories are mentioned in "Long Walk to Freedom"

Every Sunday there is a great african flea market in the mall just a block away from us offering a variety of delicious foods and beautiful crafts.

  • Had a great time. Thank you Karen.

  • Karen was very helpful from the beginning and guided us on everything we needed prior our arrival in Jo'burg. However, due to circumstances out of our control we couldn't stay at her guest house. Next time we visit South Africa, we will not hesitate to try to stay with her and meet her personally.

  • Karen's guesthouse was really nice with a big, comfortable bed, clean room and friendly staff. All rooms are on ground floor, and since all buildings are protected by a tall wall, there is no view and I felt a bit locked in.

In the area you will find a sterile shopping mall and a nicer road (10-15 min walking) with hair salons, restaurants and a great second hand book shop. There is a park to chill in, but the area seems far from vibrant as other parts of town.

Grasshoppers were really loud at night, and sounds travels easily through the walls. But the bed were comfortable and we had four nights of good sleep.

  • We were drawn to Karen's home based on her presentation and descriptions of her place. The history behind her neighborhood was so interesting to learn about especially since we were staying during the time when Mandela passed away. We were not at all disappointed in any part of the experience. Karen was so kind and helpful during our stay. She made sure everything was in order and that we felt like the only people staying with her (which we weren't she was completely full) Our trip to Johannesburg would not have been the same had we stayed elsewhere.

  • My daughter and I returned to stay with Karen after visiting the Madikwe Game Reserve. As with our first visit with Karen, we were warmly welcomed. There are multiple patios and lounges to sit and relax including a beautiful tranquil covered garden patio with fountain and pool. Karen is genuinely concerned about her guests comfort and was quick to provide directions and history of the surrounding area. Wonderful respite as we prepared for our trans-Atlantic flight!

  • Wonderful stay! Karen and her staff were warm and accommodating. We felt at home within minutes. My luggage was delayed and Karen directed me to stores in a local mall (within walking distance) where I could find reasonably priced essentials. Karen checked on us several times during our stay and was always helpful with directions and suggestions for shopping and sightseeing. The guest house itself is beautifully decorated, comfortable and secure. We could not have had a more pleasant stay.

  • My friend and I stayed at this guesthouse for 2 nights in early November and loved it! The guesthouse was beautiful, the room very comfortable and Karen, the owner, was terrific - very nice, accommodating and interested in sharing information about the neighborhood, which Nelson Mandela not only used as a hide-out from the government, but where many of his friends lived in the 50s and 60s. We would definitely stay there again if we return.

An outgoing passionate guesthouse owner, wife and mother of three wonderful sons who loves history. I welcome you to our guesthouse . Come discover the fascinating (website hidden) and stories about the houses in the area, all with links to the great Nelson Mandela. Ours was a "Safehouse" in the late 1950's and early 1960's and the house directly accross the street from us was a "safehouse" too, where Nelson Mandela lived undercover for six months.!
