Location

Hilo, Hawaii, United States

Want to be in the heart of Hilo? This is it! Centrally located right next to the Farmers Market, Hilo bay, Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, and Palace theater, just walk out your door to enjoy downtown Hilo!

We strongly suggest that you rent a car when you arrive to Hilo Airport, a short ten minute drive from your room, so you can explore all the wonders the Big Island has to offer.

Start here in Hilo, where you can visit Rainbow falls, Coconut Island, Richardson Beach, or the Kaumana Caves. Want to learn something new? How about the Imiloa Astronomy Center, Mokupapapa Discovery Center, or Lyman House? Need a few gifts to send home? Visit Big Island Candies, Two Ladies Kitchen, or Big Island Macadamia Nut Farm. Looking for something to celebrate? Time your trip with the Hoolaulea Festival, Merry Monarch Festival, seasonal outrigger races, or Lei Day. Hungry? Dine local on delicious Thai, Japanese, Indian, Hawaiian, and Mexican food all within walking distance before closing your evenings at Chapter 27, Hilo Bay Cafe, or the Kava Bar.

From Hilo, nothing is too far away. Take a hike in the Volcano National Park where you can see active volcano sites, sulphur vents, or native nene. Keep driving to the southern most point of the United States and see one of four green sand beaches. Cruise through Pahoa town to experience the laid back vibes of the 70’s still alive. See for yourself the wall of lava that overtook the highway in 2014. Ready to get lost in Jurassic park? Get lost in the magic of Waipio and Polulu Valley. Sight see the beautiful Hamakua coast, stopping for roadside Poi balls, local dried Ahi, or Tex’s famous malasadas. Or maybe for a longer stop try zip lining in Umauma over waterfalls, wander the tropical paths of the botanical garden, or stop for ice cream on your way to Akaka Falls. Finally, thanks to the saddle road, drive two hours to some of the worlds most beautiful white sand beaches: Hapuna, 69, Makalavena, and Kua bay. Be sure to see the sunset before you tour Kona Brewing Company. At long last, on your way home to your room at Pakalana, drive up to the visitors center on Mauna Kea, taller than Everest from the sea floor and home to some of the world most advanced telescopes.

From snorkeling with manta rays in Kona to ATV rides in Havi to drinking a Mehana at Honolii as the surfers paddle out pau Hana (after work), the Big Island is the place to be. Let us be your base camp. Aloha!

A conservationist and conversationalist, I love exploring our beautiful world! Currently managing my family’s inn located in Hilo, Hawaii where I was born and raised.
During your stay
My family all work to ensure you a pleasant stay. However, you might not meet any of us! That’s because this room is keyless. Upon booking, you will be emailed a four digit code to enter and exit from the front door as well as your private room door. If you need anything at all, please send me a message! Paul, the owner of the downstairs cafe, is not affiliated with the rooms upstairs, so he cannot answer any questions about your stay. I do highly recommend reserving a meal at Paul’s Place Cafe, which is ranked one of the best cafe’s in Hilo, or stopping into Koji’s Bento Shop, serving up local grinds!
