Now booking for the very popular summer season! Please scroll through photos. Many recent updates. Also please note 3 night minimum stay requirement during certain holiday weekends (Labor Day, Columbus Day) Our efficiency style two room 488 square foot (45 sq meters) suite is new, bright, well-insulated and very inviting. You won't find a better value in Harpswell. We are an AirBnb Superhost located less than 15 minutes by car from a thriving college town and a #1 rated Main Street. Please scroll through our photos - many new ones have been added. Enjoy comfort and coziness year round. Please note that we don't have a real kitchen, but we have many small appliances, so you can get by fairly well. We have a propane heater with wood stove ambiance that will keep you toasty warm. There is a queen size bed in the bedroom and a pullout queen size couch in the living room. Both rooms have cathedral ceilings and ceiling fans. Private bath with shower and private entrance. The living room area has skylights, a 42 in HDTV with expanded basic cable, Netflix and dvd player (there are some dvds in the suite and many other dvds readily available -just ask). RedBox is at several locations close by. We offer wifi (we recently improved the connectivity and signal is now very strong for laptops and cellphones - good for streaming video) and an ethernet "hard wire" adapter for NetFlix or for connecting a laptop. The living and dining area has an A/C window unit, ceiling fan, table with four chairs, small refrigerator, microwave, convection toaster oven, coffeemaker, induction cook top "hot plate", and an electric wok. We are in the process of installing a kitchen sink that should be really for the busy summer season. Outdoors we have a small communal gas grill and a large shared charcoal grill. (but no supplies for charcoal grill). We provide plenty of utensils and dishes, tea, coffee, etc. - basically many of the amenities needed to put together simple meals. Our suite is best suited to those who want to try out some of the numerous local restaurants in addition to eating in for a few simple meals. We are in the process of installing a kitchen sink, but it will not be available until early June unless noted. Floor length curtains offer some privacy between the bedroom and the living room. There is a brand new propane heater with burning log ambiance in the bedroom. This gives a cozy feel to the bedroom and provides wonderful heat for both rooms. There is also a ceiling fan. Realistically our suite is most ideal for a couple, however three adults or a family with one teenager or a small child should be comfortable. The bathroom has a shower bath. Window A/C unit. The suite is adjoining our home and is separated by a wall from our kitchen. The private entrance and the bedroom part of the suite are at the very back of our house. We ask that you conserve water since we have a well - great drinking water! We usually make muffins (regular or gluten-free) for our guests, but we can't guarantee this. And we may just put some free range eggs in your refrigerator or rustle up some eggs for you if we are able to do so, work and travel permitting.
Please note that our schedules may take us away from our home at times, so we will leave instructions for entering the attached suite and be available by cellphone if you have any questions or concerns. If you need to use the pullout couch, please let us know in advance and we will make it up for you. If you are in need of anything, please do not hesitate to let us know. We want you to enjoy your stay. As an aside, please note that we are on a busy road, but the suite is at the back of our house away from the road. We are in an extremely convenient location for heading out on adventures. Don't let the cooler weather keep you away from visiting this area! There is plenty to do year round!
Guests have access via a private entrance to their own private attached suite and private gravel parking area. Next to the entrance, we have a few chairs for relaxing. As our guests, you can also walk around to the shared outdoor patio area with both a charcoal and a gas grill and feel free to walk anywhere outdoors on our property. We also have pretty much everything you might need. If you are interested in a lobster dinner, you can order fresh cooked lobster just up the road over the bridge at Gurnet Trading Company (BYOB or buy there, outdoor seating). If a full kitchen isn't a priority for you, then you will find that you will have almost all the comforts of home and easy access to many restaurants and several grocery stores.
Interaction with Guests
We will most likely be available at some point during your stay to meet you, but if not, we will be readily available by cellphone to answer any questions you have. We will be happy to tell you about the local attractions and visit with you in the common area outdoors, however we will also respect your privacy if that is your wish. We have three cats and a dog. They are not allowed in the guest suite, but you may see them or visit with them if we socialize in our screened porch. We really enjoy conversing and interacting with our guests if that is your wish, so please don't hesitate to ask us if you need to borrow anything and let us know if something isn't working properly or if there is anything that we can do to improve the suite or make your stay more enjoyable. Your satisfaction is very important to us! Always remember - if you need anything, just ask!
We love our town! Harpswell (population 5,000 but definitely a little bigger in the summer) has more coastline than any other town on the East coast - 216 miles in all!! We are literally surrounded by saltwater here. We are directly across the road from the New Meadows River. This saltwater river goes out to Casco Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Our home is located midway between the fun and charming town of Brunswick and the city of Bath (The City of Ships, voted "best main street" recently) Eat out in one of our local ethnic, seafood or American unique or chain restaurants, visit the Bowdoin College campus, take in a show at Maine State Music Theatre, attend a summer music concert, do some yoga or zumba at a local studio, or drive and explore the coast. The possibilities are endless. This area is a year-round destination for enjoying Maine hospitality and scenery. Grocery stores and many shops and restaurants are within 5 to 15 minutes by car. Take a walk up the road to view the sunrise or sunset from the bridge, buy a bottle of wine or eat fresh-cooked seafood. There is a highly rated year round "seafood shack" (byob or buy beer and wine) with takeout and a country store with an excellent beer, wine and alcohol selection within walking distance or 1 minute by car. Our location is a wonderful gateway to fun and exploration! This area is ideal for those who want to kayak, bicycle or go on leisurely hikes. Bring your kayaks, bicycles and walking shoes! Kayak tours offered in the area with all gear provided. Harpswell and the neighboring towns of Topsham, Bath and Brunswick have many nature preserves, hiking trails, public boat launches, a riverfront bicycle trail, river and ocean views and walks. What's really great is that many of the natural scenery can be enjoyed for free - so you can plan a whole day for only the cost of your food - brown bag it, get takeout, or dine in a restaurant. There are 184 restaurants in total in the towns of Harpswell, Brunswick, Bath and Topsham according to TripAdvisor. For nature enthusiasts, get a taste of what you can see by going to the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust website.
Brunswick also has Bowdoin College with Maine State Music Theatre and the International Music Festival throughout the summer. Bowdoin College also has two museums (an Arctic and an art museum) and the Chamberlain House Museum is just across the street. Bowdoin often has events and performances that are open to the public. So much to do -consignment store shopping, watching a movie at the nearby feature film movie theater or the independent movie theater or dinner and a film option at the Frontier cafe. There are three movie theaters in Brunswick - one that shows feature films is just up the road! We are just off Route 1, so we're in a great location to explore Midcoast Maine for day trips. Visit Rockland/Camden/Rockport, Wiscasset, Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta all within an hour and 20 minutes or less drive. Intriguing Portland (with a tremendous number of restaurants, bars, museums, etc.) is an easy 35 minute drive. Augusta, Maine's capitol city, is also about 40 minutes away. Take a noontime scenic cruise of Casco Bay just down the road from us on Bailey Island. USA's #1 voted favorite place (according to Good Morning America 2014 poll) Acadia National Park is a three hour drive. Also if you are checking out Bowdoin College for your son or daughter or attending a reunion, we are less than a 15 minute drive from the campus.
We have a whole basket filled with brochures, so you can put off the planning until you arrive and then comfortably explore the area. All of our guests have used our Harpswell Heritage Land Trust brochure with a map, description and directions to some amazingly beautiful places that require only an easy hike or drive to visit. There is also a small indoor heated pool (no hot tub) and fitness center at a hotel just up the road. You can purchase a pass for unlimited use for a day or a week. Planet Fitness is also just up the road for those who have a premier membership.
There is no public transit to our home, so a car is a necessity and exploring the area by car will make your visit all the more memorable. Once you get here, you will find that the driving is very easy and relaxing- especially in Harpswell! The Amtrak train and the bus from Boston stop in Brunswick (15 minutes away by car). Car rental is an option. The Portland airport is 45 minutes by car or taxi. There is a bus from Portland to Brunswick, but taxi transport would need to be arranged from the airport to the bus terminal in Portland.
Other Things to Note
Before you inquire about renting our suite, place make sure to set up a profile with Airbnb. We're sort of picky about knowing a little about you and we want to see your photo and that you have taken the time to write a brief narrative about yourself before we will consider having you as a guest. We will leave some brochures in the suite about places to visit in the area . In addition, we will be happy to give you suggestions in person or by email/cellphone when possible.
Maine has an 8% lodging tax. We have included this tax (normally paid by guests) in our price, so we will not ask you to pay it upon arrival. We prefer a three night minimum stay for holiday weekends including at this time Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day Weekends.
We would expect our guests to respect our privacy and our property. We are happy to consider special requests. We strictly maintain a non-smoking policy inside the suite for the comfort of all of our guests. If you must smoke outdoors, please leave the cigarette butts outside (we will provide a place to extinguish the butts) and don't bring them indoors to the wastebasket. Also for the comfort of all of our guests - please no major cooking (high fat foods or foods with strong odors) or cooking of lobster inside the suite). Also please be mindful of water usage and avoid excessive use of the propane heater. We use well water (excellent drinking water with no chlorine) and also have to watch our utilities just like any homeowner. There is no cleaning fee added to the cost, so we ask you to kindly dispose of trash, gather recyclables and just tidy up a bit. We have never had a problem with all our wonderful Airbnb guests. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and sincerely hope that you enjoy your stay!
No pets - sorry.
I can only agree with earlier reviews I read. A superb place to stay with terrific host and hostess. PLUS - an ideal location for exploring this area of the Maine coast: quick access to Rt. 1/295 for trips up the coast and down to Portland, minutes from Harpswell's scenic coastal areas. Easily one of the best experiences I have had with airbnb.
I loved staying here! I came to pick up my daughter from Bowdoin -- it is close enough to campus to make it very convenient, but at the same time at the water's edge. Bill and Elaine were gracious and I felt very welcomed the entire visit. I chose to work from the apartment for two days -- there was excellent wireless connection and no issue with getting work done. The space was very cozy and I wanted for nothing! Theresa
Awesome little place. We were so comfortable, and muffins in the AM just fabulous. It was a great locale to explore all the beautiful areas close by. Bill and Alana were wonderful and welcoming. Super duper, highly recommend!
Alane and Bill were so welcoming and helpful! The space is beautiful and well maintained, with all of the amenities we needed, and is situated in a beautiful location. This place and our hosts had all the hospitality and charm of a small bed and breakfast, it was a lovely stay.
My partner and I were staying in the area to look for apartments, and Bill and Alane were so helpful with providing us information about the area, and even putting us in touch with one of their friends who knows the market in Portland! They were friendly, kind, and very attentive hosts. We would definitely recommend a stay with them!
We loved our weekend trip to Harspwell, ME! Bill & Elane were generous, thoughtful, kind hosts. When we arrived Bill had the little wood stove already on and warming up the sweet, sunny space. Elane offered us fritata that night, had muffins both mornings and sent us off with kale chips for our drive back to Boston. It was great chatting with Bill & Elane, learning more about their cozy life in Maine. This suite is much prettier and more charming in real life than the photos show. We loved Harpswell too -- we found gorgeous snowy ocean views, went to this amazing restaurant called Frontier in Brunswick and drank sangria with locals at the Cantina on Saturday night. This suite is truly sweet and a little Maine treasure!
Both Bill and Alane were very friendly and welcoming both before and during our visit. They answered all of my questions right away, and were very helpful with finding local things to do and places to eat. The place itself was beautiful, very clean and comfortable, and had everything we needed for our weekend. It was a great location - nice and quiet but within half an hour of everywhere we wanted to go. Can't wait to stay here again!
Dear Nick and Gillian, thank you for your very kind and generous review. We truly strive to provide the best possible space for those who want to venture out and explore the area, but then come home to a welcoming environment.
We are looking forward to seeing you again! Bill and Alane
