About this listing
Writer's Retreat is perfect for 1-2 people catching a flight out. Simple room, with firm bed, upstairs.
Just want a simple, but nice, space to write and relax? We're two fellow writers with a toddler muse and we want to open our home (and book collection) to anyone seeking a retreat from the city.
Please read our entire description, as it answers many questions about our location, transportation, limitations, rules, etc. We cannot allow refunds outside of the refund restrictions we have specified through this site, so we encourage you to make sure that this location, set up, and accommodation works for you.
Welcome! (Since the pictures were taken, our home has changed a bit to allow for a more child-friendly space for our toddler) :)
Writer's Retreat features an Ikea firm foam mattress on a platform foundation. The room has a private bathroom on the same (upstairs) floor. There is a desk with a chair as well. Towels are included with the room.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Sorry, there is no bathtub and the shower is a single stall shower.
Built in 1942, our rambling farmhouse-ish home is located in a residential neighborhood, seven minutes from SeaTac airport and 20 minutes from Seattle. We cannot accommodate more people in this room. There is no curfew or required check-in time, but we ask that you remember that even though the house is big, it's not soundproof.
Our common spaces include:
-- a large, beautiful kitchen if you want to prepare any (vegetarian) meals. We do have a BBQ if you are interested in cooking meat, though. :) Guests have access to a mini-fridge for leftovers and other refrigerated items.
--the Entry Room, which offers an abundance of teas to choose from and lovely morning light for reading or writing
-- the Great Room with a large book collection, comfortable seating, and a large dining table
-- and the veranda, with a nice view of the sunset
Interaction with Guests
We try to interact with our guests as much as they want to interact. We are a pretty good read of our guests and we'll meet you where you're at. We are extroverted, love to talk about travel and other countries, and we have a very talkative toddler. We've had varied interactions with guests, so we're comfortable either way. We are early risers (6:30-7:00AM), so if you require absolute silence or you want to sleep in, our place probably isn't a good fit. :)
Outside Our Home/Burien/Seattle:
20 minutes outside of Seattle, we're located in a diverse residential neighborhood, 1-2 miles away from grocery stores, several different restaurants, markets, and cafes. We can recommend some great, authentic and delicious spots. If you like to run, need to walk the dog, or the kids need to get out their "willies," North SeaTac park is only a 10 minute walk away and has a playground, basketball court, biking/walking trails and Frisbee golf course. We are 2.2 miles from restaurants, the library, the post office, and the main drag of Burien. It's a great walk (2 miles), if you're up for it.
We have ample free parking and advise guests to park in front of the house, when possible.
A taxi from the airport will run about $17-$22 and will take a mere 7-9 minutes. Although possible to get to us by bus from the airport, it will take closer to an hour because there are no direct routes.
While some adventurous types have stayed with us carless, we HIGHLY recommend having a car. Enterprise Car Rental (we love them) is very close and will pick up and drop off, but the hours are 8-5p.
If you're a more leisurely-focused traveler, public transportation is 7-11 minute walk away (depending on the time of day the bus stops are in different directions), and will take you downtown. If you want to check out the bus times (King County Metro Transit) prior to booking WA-509 and S 128th St are good locator points for buses. If you don't see yourself traveling during commuting times, prepare yourself for 45-60 minute bus rides to downtown Seattle.
If you do have a car, we're 15-20 minutes from downtown with no traffic and from 7-9:30a and 3:30-6:30p tack on an additional 20 minutes to and from Seattle, to be safe.
Additionally, if you have a car but don't want to park downtown, our Light Rail goes downtown every 10 mins and take about 33 mins from Tukwila Station to Westlake Station.
Other Things to Note
UPON RESERVING: You will get information about parking, self-check-in, house rules and arrival info. PLEASE read all of this and *print* it out, as it will help you have an easy check-in and a comfortable stay. Once you book the room, we ask a few questions to get to know you, in order to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
We are a vegetarian household so we ask that only vegetarian food be prepared in the kitchen.
Please remove your shoes upon entering the house. Inside-only shoes/slippers are okay.
No smoking on the property.
Please help yourself to any of our books/videos while staying with us, but please return before leaving.
Becca and Josh were great at staying in contact and ensuring that we had everything we needed. They had great recommendations for restaurants and site-seeing. We really enjoyed talking with them. On the desk in the room there was a little basket of maps, tour pamphlets and a binder with recommendations of restaurants in the area. Overall, it was a very comfortable experience.
Josh and Becca are great hosts. The house was fun and unique. The bed and room and bath are clean and comfortable. Josh made me a really nice cup of coffee. The neighborhood is great and easy to get to from the airport. I would stay there again.
It was a great experience to stay here. I felt like I was visiting my close friend's place. They were welcoming me and gave many helpful tips. I am very grateful that I found this place which is very close from the seatac airport. I will definitely stay again if I visit Seattle.
Funky, friendly, environmentally conscious with a few quirks. Josh and Becca went out of their way to make sure we would have something to eat when we had a very early morning departure. Overall, a good value for the Seattle area.
Our stay with Josh and Becca was better than we could have anticipated. Their home is very cozy and was a great balance of rest and relaxation and making a good connection with them. We enjoyed talking with them so much, and they gave us some good ideas for making the most of our short time in Seattle. We felt like we were well hosted and the coffee and breakfast was delightful:)

About the Host, Becca And Josh
Welcome! This is our 5th year (!) as Airbnb hosts and we've loved meeting all the amazing people that have stayed with us. Our newest addition, born in August 2012 (now three!), will make you smile with delight when you meet him. He's a host-in-training and we love showing him how awesome it is to connect with other amazing people from all over the world.
For us, being hosts is not just about offering a bed or a place to sleep. We really enjoy opening our home to others, and we aim to provide a comfortable, casual, creative space to rest, relax, and connect.
After hosting over 200 guests in the past 5+ years, we have found that folks who are flexible, casual, community-minded, respectful, cool with chatty /engaged toddlers, friendly and enjoy sharing (bathrooms, tips, stories, connections, etc.) have the best experience staying with us.
Our house is frequently a gathering place for family and friends, and at times it can be full. We share stories and laughter, talk about different cultures, compare cooking notes, and in general, become life-long friends. If this sounds like you, we would love to welcome you to our home.
If you're looking for more quiet, less interaction, more pristine accommodations, less people or a more central location, we can recommend some other hosts who might be a better fit.
We also hope to create a network of like-minded hosts so we can recommend hosts in other nearby cities to co-create awesome NW vacations. Feel free to message us to ask any questions!
