My boyfriend and I just enjoyed a wonderful weekend in the yurt. Our dog, Edgar Allan Pug, had just as much fun as we did. Michael was very helpful and provided a welcoming space for us. He was knowledgable of the lands history and provided thorough suggestions for how to spend our time. We explored the land, built campfires, read, played board games, created art, and lounged on the deck. I have already recommended the yurt as a potential vacation spot for my family and friends. I can't wait to go back!
My boyfriend and I just got back from a 3 night retreat at Loomis Lair, and are already planning a return trip! This is the perfect place to "get away from it all," complete with gorgeous views, comfortable and cozy accommodations, and a most gracious host! To start with, the yurt is nothing short of wonderful. It is very well maintained, and the amenities and furnishings will provide all the comforts of home. It is very well heated with a brand new unit, so despite the lingering winter weather we were toasty the whole time! Unfortunately it was too cold to sit out on the deck/by the fire pit and enjoy the view, but this will be something to look forward to next time. I would recommend reading the materials Michael has there to get suggestions on cool things to do, and checking out the books on the Loomis Gang who used to occupy the land, which was a crazy, fascinating history lesson.
Also, Michael is a great host, and a super nice guy! He gave us a very warm welcome and thorough tour upon arrival, and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. His thoughtfulness in planning the yurt to be an ideal getaway spot shows! He has a small farm next to his house (up the hill from the yurt), and was nice enough to introduce us to his four goats, numerous ducks, and adorable puppy Claire. Unfortunately it was too cold for the goats to join us for a "Goat Walk," but the guestbook tells of previous guests having a blast hanging out with Oliver and company.
Overall, the ideal place to go if you want to have some quiet, solitary, unplugged R&R out in the countryside, without the comfort sacrifice that goes along with camping. It's great for visits in all seasons - enjoying a snowfall from the cozy comfort of the yurt (following it up with some killer sledding down the front field) was every bit as good as I imagine sitting around the campfire or enjoying the fall colors to be. I can't recommend a visit to Loomis Lair enough!
This is our 6th visit to Michael's yurt, I think. We absolutely love it at Loomis Lair. The setting is gorgeous and Michael is a great host, checking to see that you have everything we need, but allowing us our privacy. The shower can be quirky, but we're used to it. The new heater is amazing. The yurt was definitely warmer and less drafty than our own home even when it was windy and snowing outside. I love the absolute silence and solitude at night and the sounds of birds singing upon awakening. A very special place for our family.
Our stay at Loomis Lair was wonderful and peaceful. Michael is a gracious host and made sure our stay was pleasant. He was there to greet us and was just a call or text away.
The yurt is well taken care of and certainly homey. It was -8 one night but inside was nice and warm. I enjoyed looking at the moon and the stars through the sky dome and having the natural light during the day.
I only stayed there for two nights and had my dog with me. There was so much snow that snowshoeing was difficult, but it was worth the effort. Made a quick ride into the quaint nearby town of Hamilton to sample some beer at Good Nature Brewing, order a pizza at Oliveri's, and take home some chocolates from Maxwells. All were worth the trip.
Hope to make it back when we can explore more of the grounds and see all the animals.
My girlfriend and I had a great Valentine's Day weekend stay at the Yurt. The yurt itself was as depicted in the pictures, and more. Everything is very clean and well kept by Michael, and he is a real nice and helpful guy to boot. He explains everything when you arrive and then gives you 100% privacy after that. On the other hand if you want help or companionship, he is warm about offering that as well. He even shared some of his duck eggs with us (he's got a puppy, ducks, and goats on the property), which was a nice treat for breakfast. And, you MUST join him for a "goat walk" at least once before you leave. Ask Michael about it!
In a practical vein, there is a fully equipped kitchen. We brought pork chops, vegetables, bread, eggs, juice, coffee, etc. and were able to cook all our meals in the yurt. The only thing you don't have is an oven.
Bathroom area has a toilet and shower, which are as clean as any house's.
The bed is an Ikea roll-out futon and is firm and comfortable, plus you have it as a couch during the day. In short, this is a small home and it feels like it very shortly after you arrive and settle in.
Micheal was a the best host I've had in and outside of Air Bnb. Very friendly and accommodating. I've already recommended him to my friends. Expect to be shown everything about the yurt and the land it's on. Very interesting place.
It is warm during the cold nights. We even stayed there in 4 degrees Fahrenheit and slept cozy and comfortable in bed.
Also there's fun towns and great restaurants near by.
The scenery is stunning.
Had a great winter weekend in Michaels Yurt. We were greeted by Michael with a shoveled path for our car and for us. He avoided using salt as he was mindful that we were bringing our dog. The Yurt was very cozy and warm. We were able to cook all of our meals in the Yurt. We made a hike up to the farm, traveled into the town of Hamilton, stopped at the Good Nature brewery, and hiked up to Loomis hill for a breathtaking view of the 9-mile swamp at sunset. Michaels attention to detail is remarkable, the yurt is spacious and very clean. We highly recommend this yurt and would love to come back in the fall or summer.
About the Host, Michael
This is a picture of me while Canoeing the Sangerfield River in the beautiful Nine Mile Swamp. The Yurt at Loomis Lair is located nearby, perched high above the Swamp.
I grew-up in Hamilton, NY, the home of Colgate University, which is about 10 miles from Loomis Lair. I went to School at Morrisville College (AAS-Mechanical Engineering Technology), Excelsior College (BS-Art and Design) and Rochester Institute of Technology (MFA- Industrial Design).
I have lived and worked in New Haven, CT, Los Angeles, CA, Rochester, Ithaca and Hamilton, NY. I have designed and fabricated Exhibits and Furniture for many years and I have more recently taught Industrial Design and Graphic Design at the college level.
I have been involved with the historic restoration of two houses and I was also a founding Board Member and the Secretary of the City Point Historic District Neighborhood Association in New Haven, CT.
I missed not being around the beautiful forests and fields of Central New York. I wanted to return to my roots in a place that I love and work toward achieving a more self-sustainable lifestyle.
I am the founder, owner and operator of Loomis Lair Yurt Rentals, since March of 2010.
