Campsie is an awesome area about 12kms from the centre of Sydney. It's cheap, very Asian influenced and super fun! Not touristy at all. Our old guesthouse "Scruffy" is falling down around our ears but in the mean time we offer cheap, private rooms.
****Please check with me before booking so I can confirm dates and prices.****
This listing is just for one bedroom.
Room 2 is a huge room with a set of bunk beds, one single bed, a double bed and a fold out sofa bed, making it suitable for up to 7 people in a group, or a family. There is one study desk and a small fridge. We can add extra beds if needed if there is an even bigger group.
Campsie Guesthouse is very old so be prepared for a scruffy paint job, and bathrooms that certainly aren't modern! Although the house is scruffy and falling down in parts it does meet all standards of safety - there is an up to date fire panel and alarm system, proper closing fire doors on each room, and each room locks for privacy. The house is not overcrowded and much more peaceful than your usual hostel. It's more like one big share home.
There are seven separate bedrooms with a very flexible set up. The biggest room (Room 2) will fit a family or group of friends, the smallest (Room 5) is just big enough for bed and desk.
It's hostel standard and at most there can be 15 people on that floor of the building sharing three bathrooms, a common room, and a kitchen. Foxtel/Cable TV is in the lounge room, and we also provide a house cleaner once a week along with fresh hotel quality linen for your rooms. Wifi is free. We don't however have any air conditioning – just fans.
We have a huge verandah and an outdoor courtyard too with BBQ and smoking areas so there is quite a lot of space and it's a relaxed, cheap and cheerful place to stay. There is an outside laundry with coin operated washing machines and dryers.
The house is set up for independent travellers. We don't have a reception desk and you will be left on your own to explore the city. Of course many people stay on long term and end up making good friends in the house. If you haven't shared a house before, or lived out of home or travelled much then you may not enjoy this property. If you're happy to meet new people then you may love it – some of our guests stay as long as 10 months!
I can also provide any needed baby equipment free of charge - car seats, prams, cots, high chairs etc.
We are an excellent family booking - kids can run around in a fully fenced yard with some toys supplied and as we are already a bit rundown there is no stress about any chaos, mess or random damage caused by tearaway children!
Their room, a common TV area, common kitchens and common bathrooms, common laundry, common wifi.
Interaction with Guests
House managers Helen and Megan are very friendly and available by phone. They visit daily to help out as needed.
Campsie itself is not a tourist area. It's a mostly Asian area with a tonne of great local shops, supermarkets, a shopping mall, cafes and restaurants. All only a five min walk away. It's cheaper to stay where the locals live and eat than in the city or at the beaches!
From here it will take you 20-30 mins on a train into the city centre and about 40mins-1 hour to get to the beaches. You can catch the Burwood 400 bus from the Airport directly to our house making it very cheap.
Other Things to Note
To show that you have read and understood my description please include the magic word "Unicorn" in your email to me when enquiring.
PLEASE NOTE: We try our best to give you the room you booked but due to the unpredictable nature of juggling multiple guests who extend alongside upcoming new bookings you may be given a different room in the same guesthouse. If this would cause issues for you please consider other AirBnB properties. In trying to be fair we do not ask existing guests who love us to move out of rooms for new guests if a similar room in the house is instead empty
"Photos on the site may differ slightly from the actual room as we replace furniture and bedding as needed and have fun rearranging at times."
A full page of House Rules will be provided but it's all common sense and many of the same standards that apply all over the world.
It was really nice to meet Jody and her son. Even if our children was quite active and noisy, it was pleasant to stay at her house with friendly other guests and host. Very close to woolworth and playground and also library by walking in 3min. If you are traveling Australia, I would recommend this place.
It was good place to go to airport and city~
I will travel melbourn and brisbane and come back this guesthouse again.
Jody is so nice to everybody and his son is also good to my children!!
I went to Sydney in December/2014 for holidays with my family from Brazil. The house was exactly how it is described here and it was very easy to go to all touristic points, since it is near a train station.
I really enjoyed my time at Scruffy and Jody was always very helpful.
Simply put, this is the nicest place we have stayed since we arrived in Australia (nearly three months ago). The rooms are comfortable, the premises clean and Megan and Helen, the two ladies that oversee the house, have been an absolute godsend; giving us help and advice every step of the way when it comes to finding work.
The house is also very conveniently situated close to shops and a train station.
I would definitely stay here again and will recommend it to any of my friends that may be coming to Sydney.
The house is located near to the bus and train station (8-10 min walk), close to some shops and markets. Pricing for 6 people was convenient.
Jody answer our enquires quickly.
The person on duty didn't appear in the whole time of our stay there. Even when we arrived we had to go to her place (in the backyard) to find her and ask for the room's key.
The room wasn't the same as in the picture, where in a room for 6 people, there was only one double bed, one bunk-bed, one sofa-bed and of my friends had to sleep in a mattress right down in the floor.
Cleaning should be improved.
Thanks for the feedback. I understand our managers have already spoken to your group about some of the issues - there was some miscommunication between group members about checking in and also the type of accommodation I think. It was the same room as in the picture just with newer and safer furniture - less bunks etc. We had notified you of sleeping arrangements for a bigger group before hand but again I think it was only one or two members of the group not aware. We will put some thought into how we can make sure each member of a group booking is aware of our independent, basic nature before arriving. Thanks!
Jody is an excellent host and a friendly person as are Megan, Helen and John, the managers.
We had a good time there and found the house very suitable for us. The room heaters were a most welcome asset. As Jody says it is an older house, but it was clean and tidy with all facilities and the location was very good, quite close to Campsie Railway station and Bus stops and very easy to find. Also our host unexpectedly supplied fruit and food for us on our arrival. There were others staying here but we hardly saw them at any time,(except when the world cup was on TV). There are uncountable number of places to eat just up the road, as well as supermarkets where you can buy food and prepare it at the house.
It cost less than $4.oo to catch the bus to the Airport. One of our group staying here is elderly and gets lost easily so when he was departing John caught the bus to the airport with him just to make sure he got his flight ok. All in all I would highly recommend the Scruffy old Guest house to anyone looking for a cheap, friendly and convenient place to stay.
Jody provided us with notice of change of arrangements a week prior to our stay. Originally this was at her other accommodation. Difficut to find alternative whilst travelling in India. However, Campsie was offered and our stay was friendly enough with others resident in the hostel. The place was scruffy as it says but convenient to Sydney city centre (20 mins by train).

I'm a 37 year old solo mama of one boy, Elliott, who is five years old. I was looking for some way to stay home and raise my son without working long hours so I started renting out rooms in my personal house. That grew so busy I found an old guesthouse, and then another one, and now I have over 55 rooms for rent!
I live at The Rex with my son and our dogs currently. We also have a live in house manager couple, Helen and Megan who manage the Sydney business.
We're a friendly bunch and happy to help you get settled in Sydney or Tamworth and give you some local knowledge. If we are busy then we have instructions on how to check yourself in without our help and we will try and say hi during your first few days!
We love independent travellers, students and families who aren't looking for "the party scene" but want more a friendly, home like vibe. We're very LGBT friendly, love people from all backgrounds and children of all ages. The guesthouses are older style, very basic and clean with a bit of character. Most importantly the guesthouses are safe and in local areas!
