The Space

Na Xaman Ik is a safe, secluded compound and private home (hosts in residence) located on the Gulf Coast on the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula between the fishing villages of Chuburna Puerto and Chelem.

A unique oasis, the modern Second Floor Master Bedroom Suite with kitchenette is available for rent with beach, lagoon and pool views.

This airy, spacious studio style room has a kitchenette for preparing breakfast, snacks and simple meals. The kitchenette has a two burner stove, full size refrigerator and all kitchen utensils such as pots, pans, silverware, plates, etc.

The suite includes a comfortable queen size bed, large shower, double stone sinks and toilet. All linens and towels provided. Purified water, toilet paper and paper towels in place on arrival to start you off, guests are expected to replace them when they run out. An electric fireplace provides a romantic ambience. Huge covered and uncovered patios are right outside the sliding glass doors where you can sit and read, suntan or simply watch the palms sway.

Large pool with covered and open patios for hanging hammocks or lounging. Third Floor lookout. Ample parking available within the compound or on the street. In-house library. Gas and charcoal grills for barbeques. Ceiling fans throughout. Tropical birds (caged in main house & casita aviary) on the premises.

Two minute walk to Gulf beach down a sandy road. Located between the fishing villages of Chelem and Chuburna Puerto where fish restaurants, mini-grocery stores and public transportation are available. About 2 miles to Chuburna Puerto and 3 miles to Chelem.

A CAR IS A NECESSITY since this area is a little off the beaten path. There are combis (little vans) that run on the main road, about 2 blocks from the house. They go to Chuburna Puerto, Chelem and Progreso. The AutoProgreso bus runs to Merida and returns to Progreso. After 8 pm., there is no public transportation to the village other than taxis which are very expensive.

Twenty minutes to Progreso for shopping, banking, restaurants. Forty minutes to Merida for concerts, shopping, art museums, etc. Approximately 2 hours to ruins at Chichen Itza and Uxmal, caves, cenotes, etc.

This is an usually quiet area for peace and relaxation - a great getaway from it all! The friendly, well-traveled hosts can provide helpful information for anything their guests may need. Seven day minimum. Rent includes utilities (electric and gas). Drop-off laundry service is available in Progreso.

Internet is available by purchase from TELCEL in Merida on a pay as you go type plan. The internet can be somewhat sketchy at the beach areas and may not work for streaming videos and movies or large documents. There are local internet cafes in Chelem and Progreso which have high speed internet and you can hook up your own laptops to their systems.

Fishing trips with local fisherman and golf outings may be arranged at additional cost. Chuburna Puerto Village Festival - End of July/beginning of August - bullfighting, folkloric dancing in the streets, bands, etc. Carnaval in Merida in February (40 minute drive south).

Transportation may be arranged for airport and bus pickups in Merida for an additional fee. Maid service may be arranged for an additonal fee.

NOTE: WE ARE AT THE BEACH! WE ARE NOT IN MERIDA!!!! We are on the northern Yucatan COAST in a small fishing village of CHUBURNA PUERTO!!!! It is west of PROGRESO - about 15 miles. We are approximately 34 kilometers north of Merida.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the entire property excluding the main house. They may use the rooftop lookout, decks, patios, pool, BBQ area, gardens as they desire.

Interaction with Guests

The owners live within the compound in the main house and are available to answer questions, give advice on local events, points of interest, etc.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is generally very quiet with friendly neighbors from the U.S., Canada and Mexico. We like to be able to walk 2 minutes to the beach. We enjoy the peace and tranquility.

Guests will enjoy privacy and relaxation!

  • This is a gem! Sunny and Hank are warm and friendly hosts and they seek to take care of your every need. A bonus : the house is only five minutes walk from the beach at Chuburna---about one half hour drive from Merida. So, it is a 'quiet place at the beach'. You will need a car but that is the sole obstacle to enjoying yourself at this 'hacienda at the beach'. You can lounge on the deck poolside or enjoy the 360 degree views of the country side and the ocean from the upstairs. Sunny and Hank provide all the details and tips you would want on getting around this area: they have lived here eight years , they are fluent in Spanish and they know many locals--they are a part of the community. This place could be great for a family with small children because the entire 'complex' of buildings is totally enclosed by a two meter high wall--you could enjoy the long walks on the beach and also enjoy life at poolside while the children play in the swimming pool or play in the vast sand yard in the shade of the palm trees. Ask about that. They are amateur ornithologists---bird lovers--and they have a lovely collection of birds of various species as well as bunny rabbits! The local are is truly alive with bird calls and songs all day long. Highly, highly recommended!!!!

  • Great place, great people, great experience. Sunny and Hank were amazing hosts and very generous in letting us use all we needed. They have lived in the area for a long time and can offer great (website hidden) Xaman Ik was a beautiful place and the casita we stayed in was a nice bit of luxury for us. We loved the sunsets on the rooftop. We used this as our base to explore the surrounding area and Merida (we had a car) and it was perfect.

We are retired from the U.S. Navy, living at the beach in Mexico. We have lived in the Yucatan for eight years and enjoy close relationships with many local friends. I opened a small English school in the village and teach English for free to the children and ladies of the village. My husband, Hank, is addicted to golf. We enjoy meeting new people, swimming, reading, walks on the beach, sampling local foods and attending village festivals and events. We can provide guests with lots of ideas for exploring the Yucatan. We have traveled extensively and are interested in different cultures. Life at the beach is laid back and relaxed - you can do absolutely nothing but enjoy the view of the palm trees waving in the breeze or you can be off exploring the many cultural experiences the Yucatan has to offer every day! We love living here and would like to share the experience with others!
