The Space

This luxurious Southwest-style casita on 22 acres in undiscovered "Pipes Canyon" near Joshua Tree National Park and bordering 33,000 acres of Wildlands Preserve is set amidst jaw-dropping beauty, surrounded by lush vegetation, flat-topped mesas, extinct volcanoes and giant boulder formations. At 4,400 feet elevation, nestled at the foot of the Big Bear Mountains, the peace and quiet are unparalleled, and the property teems with wildlife. Visitors come from around the world to view the dark, starry skies in this part of the California desert. The Milky Way is on display almost every night. Historic Pioneertown, only a five-minute drive (where cowboy movies and TV shows were shot in the 40s and 50s) is still a great destination, with a stunt-show shoot-out every Saturday at 2:00pm, and great food and world-class live music at Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace.

High Desert Eden, while boasting every amenity (satellite TV, free wi-fi, air conditioning and a full, beautifully stocked kitchen, is an eco-friendly, off-grid, solar and wind-powered retreat. It is filled with fine art, antiques, plush furnishings and beautiful textiles. A 200 sq. foot sleeping porch is everyone's favorite -- great for viewing wildlife and waking up to outrageous desert sunrises. Delicious breakfast foods are provided for the first three days of your stay.

Your host, Max Thomas, is a nationally renown yoga master, and is available for personalized sessions, anything from restorative yoga for injuries to kick-butt classes. He is available for nature hikes and consultation on off-grid living. His wife of thirty years, Robin Maxwell, is an international bestselling novelist. Guests at High Desert Eden frequently comment on the warmth and hospitality of their hosts.

  • Robin and Max are two of the warmest, most welcoming hosts. When my fiancé and I arrived at Eden, we were greeted with miles of nature, a serene environment of wide open spaces. The Casita is situated behind the main house, and we spent the night star gazing and were lulled to sleep by the wind on the screened in bedroom on the back porch.

It's rare to stumble across a vacation property that truly feels disconnected from the world, but Robin and Max have created an oasis of tranquility, calm and reflection. We will definitely be visiting again soon.

  • We had a fantastic time a High Desert Eden! Robin and Max were the perfect hosts - warm, informative and friendly, they left us coffee, tea and bread (which was delicious) and gave us great tips for hikes and amazing views. We stayed for two nights (there were four of us) and no one wanted to leave! Next time we will definitely be taking yoga from Max - we're sorry we didn't!

  • I don't even know where to start in describing our wonderful stay at High Desert Eden. Some serious soul healing was needed, and did we ever get it. It was peaceful, relaxing, beautiful and I wish we could have stayed longer. It was hard to leave.
My friend and I took a yoga class with Max and it was epic!
Robin treated us with a whole grain loaf and asked us our coffee/milk preference, and pretty much the whole experience left me feeling well taken care of and relaxed.I'm already planning a date on when to go back.

Thank you, Robin and Max, for the best weekend we've had in a long time. :)

  • It was such a treat to stay at the Maxwell's desert hideaway last weekend. The casita is on an amazing piece of open land, with beautiful desert gardens, a great fire pit, wildlife, and much more. The location is also perfect - away from all the crowds and less than an hour away from Joshua Tree. Max and Robin were beyond accommodating and warm. We hope to make it back soon!

    Response from Robin:

Talk about a treat! You were the most wonderful guests and we can't wait for you to come back soon. Just one note: we are far less than an hour away from the park. With our handy-dandy scenic back roads map to Joshua Tree, you can be at the park entrance in less than 25 minutes, door-to-door.

  • Robin and Max were ideal hosts in just the brief time (one night) that we stayed there. They nicely greeted us upon arrival, showed us the property, and left us to relax by ourselves. Although their house is just above the cabin, we felt very comfortable and private, and the whole property feels very secluded. The back porch is the absolute selling point for this cabin; wonderful views and tranquility. Oh, and did they even mention that they're 100% off-grid?! Awesome.

  • Robin and Max were beyond incredible hosts. Not
only did the property exceed our every expectation - both Robin and Max welcomed us with open arms and thoroughly introduced us to their property, providing us with the most wonderful, magical stay. We can't wait to go back.

Their property is beyond words - we sat by the campfire all night and awoke to the most gorgeous wildlife preserve that is unreachable to many and unimaginable to most. It was truly an amazing time and we highly recommend it to any interested.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Robin and Max's Casita! It was a last minute booking near the holidays and Robin was very gracious and kind as we dealt with the logistics. As for the Casita, it's beautiful, spacious, clean, and situated in one of the nicest spots north of Joshua Tree National Park. This review doesn't do the place justice. We enjoyed our stay so much we would have added another day at the Casita had it not been booked by someone else. Highly recommended!

Max and I have lived on this property for 13 years this month, and every day we're here we love it more and more. Max has put so much great work into the gardens. It's become something of a local showplace.
