The StoneHouse at Prairiewood is a completely restored, fully modernized, historic estate. One of the region's most distinctive properties, this was originally the farmstead of renowned settler Sam Kimble. Circa 1860, the original hand-hewn timbers incorporated into this estate were crafted before the Civil War! Renovated in 2014 with painstaking attention to detail, this property features unsurpassed elegance in its amenities, while celebrating the heritage and charm of its past.

The space
The StoneHouse is very versatile. It is intentionally intimate, unusually private, and thoroughly welcoming. While just next to town, there is feeling of being a million miles away. The prairie has a subtle yet profound beauty that tends to calm our nerves and inspire our dreams. We always feel refreshed after spending time there, whether waking the trails or sipping coffee in the sun room. We take great pleasure in sharing this very special place which we so love.

The dream and vision for Prairiewood began over 10 years ago. It all started with a simple vision for saving some of the native tallgrass prairie landscape in and around Manhattan, Kansas. Along the way, we became more and more compelled by the idea of using the prairie to provide a place where the values of the land can find their way into the hearts and souls of its visitors–a place where the senses are awakened, perspective is renewed, and imagination is inspired. We have worked diligently over the past five years to bring together all the pieces for such a place. We have acquired land surrounded by native prairie ecology, created exquisite accommodations and meeting space, blazed miles of walking trails, and assembled a staff of tremendous individuals. Now, nearly 10 years later, the next chapter of our story is unfolding... Prairiewood is now a unique property set aside specifically as a prairie preserve to be offered for special events and uncommon lodging accomodations. Whether an individual seeking a place to rest and renew, a couple seeking a romantic get-away, a small friends group looking for a unique and inspiring place to meet, or a board-of-directors requiring a state-of-the-art meeting room, Prairiewood won't disappoint. From our first-class, carefully appointed accommodations to our world class guest service, everything at Prairiewood has been thoughtfully assembled to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

We operate a boutique hospitality company in our hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, where we have spent the better part of our adult lives crafting sacred spaces that capture the magic and enchantment of our favorite places. Currently, our offerings are located in Manhattan, Kansas and on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. With both of us native to Kansas, we made our first foray to the Northwoods of Minnesota in 1994, shortly after being newly married. Little did we know that initial 5-night paddling trip, launched from the end of the Gunflint Trail outside of Grand Marais, would lead to a lifetime of pursuing the Northwoods and everything it represents. In Kansas, we now own and operate a tallgrass prairie retreat & preserve in the Flint Hills outside of Manhattan. Prairiewood Retreat & Preserve has become a labor of love for us, and we thrive on offering distinctive lodging and event venues, nestled into the rolling hills of this prairie landscape. We love the gentle beauty of the prairie - a sublime beauty the soaks slowly into your soul rather than hits you abruptly! We find the Northwoods of Minnesota to be similar in that regard. Whether the quiet lapping of waves against a rock shore, the distant haunting call of a loon, the silent rise of a full moon over Lake Superior, or the crackle of a wood fire on a frigid snowy night, we find the essence of the Northwoods to invigorate our hearts and spirits. We can't think of anything more fulfilling than sharing some of our favorite places in the world, in hopes that they will be as enriching to our guests as they are to us. Welcome to our little slices of heaven!
