Paul provided me and a group of friends a fantastic weekend in Durango in mid-April. Over the course of our stay, our numbers in the house ranged from 7-11, and it was a very comfortable stay. The house was exactly as described, plus more : a cozy interior with VW knick knacks and beautiful, tropical houseplants. Paul was a very welcoming host. He was so easy to get in contact with whenever we had questions, and we even got to chat a few times when we were both hoe. The location was exactly what we were looking for: an easy 30 minute drive from downtown Durango. It was such a tranquil setting to be in, in between trips into the city for the Bluegrass Festival. We took walks around the surrounding area to the nearby lakes. The kitchen was fully stocked, allowing us to make delicious meals. The floor heating made it nice and cozy while getting to look at the snowy weather outside from the big windows. The house had such great natural light, and the beds and futons and pull out couch were so comfortable. Will definitely return if we find ourselves back in the area!
My wife and I came up to Paul's with another couple for a spring skiing trip and our experience couldn't have been better. The place itself is awesome and just south of Purgatory. We loved the proximity to the resort, the idyllic setting of the house, the radiant floor heating, and the soaring ceilings. We got to meet Paul and we were really glad that we did, he gave us some tips on places to go and got us set up with rental equipment. Highly recommended!!
Paul is a welcoming host. His description of what to expect was accurate. The house was a warm and cozy place with a kind bedroom and a loft. The house comfortably accommodated the 6 of us. The driveway is steep and as Paul has explained, you need a 4x4 to use the driveway in icy conditions. We parked at the top of the driveway and it was a 30 yard walk from where we parked to the front porch of the house.
We had a very nice and comfortable stay.
My six friends and I stayed at Paul's wonderful home for one night on our way to Ouray. Paul made us feel so comfortable and welcome. He told me ahead of time that he'd be working in his garage when we arrived and to come on in and say hello, or just to proceed to our comfy quarters if we preferred. Sure enough, there he was working on restoring an old VW bug when we got there. What a great guy. He was warm and so was his house! The kitchen was very well stocked, and we all slept happily on two full-sized futons, and king sized bed upstairs, and a pull out bed in the living area downstairs. The downstairs has windows everywhere with beautiful views. The house is right across the street from the Durango ski area. We had no trouble at all finding and getting to the house in my all wheel drive. Our friend's Prius two-wheel drive made it all the way to just before the downhill driveway, a stone's throw from the front door. Paul was clear ahead of time that this would be the case for the different cars. The only surprises at this place were happy ones. Will definitely stay again.
We had a wonderful trip to Durango and a large part of that was staying at Paul's house. The house is a real gem. It is nestled in a little corner of a beautifully treed and snowy neighborhood. The layout is very efficient and our five person family felt very comfortable there. The Kitchen is fully stocked, the bathrooms are clean, and the beds are super comfy. We loved using the Jacuzzi tub to soak sore muscles. Also, the internet wifi is great and I was able to get some work done in the evenings.
The other big bonus for us is that Paul owns Bubba's Boards. It is a really nice snow board shop about 2 miles away and he set the four riders in the family up with really nice gear. I joked with Paul that he needs to list this house with an optional snowboard package called the "Bubba Package". It was so nice to be able to just get the house and gear all handled with Paul.
The house is super close to the mountain. In fact, one morning, my wife slept in and then just walked to the resort for a 1/2 day ski. It only took her about 20 minutes to walk there.
Paul is a very cool guy. I met people on the mountain that know him and everyone speaks very highly of him. He has a fun and accommodating spirit. I just regret that we did not get more of a chance to get to know him.
One last note is about the driving access to the house. You have to climb a little hill to get to the house. Normallly, this would not be an issue, but we got a foot of snow on our trip. Paul warned us in advance to get some chains for our front wheel drive mini-van. I stopped in NM at an O-Reily's and got a $40 set. They were actually just cables. They were super easy to put on and only took about 3-5 minutes. Once they were on getting up and down the hill has easy and fun. So, if you go up in the winter either come with chains or 4X4.
A perfect stay - I would not have changed a thing. Location was great for skiing and snow shoeing. Paul was the perfect host - available as needed but we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Paul warned us that we would need 4-wheel drive for winter conditions (he wasn't kidding) - so we came prepared. Kitchen was well stocked. House was toasty warm even though the weather outside was below zero. I LOVED radiant floor heating....we felt like we were in a secluded hideaway even though we were in close proximity to the resort and Durango. PERFECT!
