Tiny and silent studio flat with a gracious backyard ,fully functional kitchen and bathroom with shower ensuite
Situated in the bohemian old city center of Pera with its art galleries, small bars and restaurants at 150 m from Istiklal Caddesi, the main pedestrinl and shopping mall of Istanbul and 500m from Taksim square.
From the windows you can see the old European embassies: Palais de France, Palazzo di Venezia, the old Dutch and Russian Embassies, the belfry of the church of St.Antoine.
You can breathe the smells and hear the sounds of the old Fransiz Sokak (French Street ) which is nearby. There are a lot of small shops where you can buy groceries and fruit and all you may need at home ...just as you were one of the locals living here forever.
You can really participate in local life living in the heart of the old city as if you were living in a small village. This was the old Beyoglu once upon a time, yet this is the modern one still retaining the fascination that drew a lot of travelers here from the old Europe.
In this area you may eat until late in the night from Turkish food to European and have a Turkish breakfast in the morning at the simultaneous sound of the musulman prayers and of the christian bells of St Antoine Church. This will be your small retreat after a day of wandering through the colors, sights and smells of Istanbul.
There is a wide collection of books and DVD's if you want to relax after your strolls or if there should be a rainy day.
A guest called this flat "a museum" - and indeed it is.
This was the first flat where I lived after I bought the building. And sometimes, especially if the summer days are hot, I like sleeping here because it is the coolest flat ...and I hate A/C.
This flat is packed with all my memories as well as with a lot of my books and some encyclopedias...I can tell you the story of every small object you can discover there.
This studio flat has a living room/bedroom with a very comfortable double bed sofa
The walls of the living room are covered with a lot of paintings - some of them are pages from an old Bible...a sunflowers field from my best Turkish friend Gulcem ...two hawks in two old gravures ..a gift from my best friend in Italy, Maria...an elephant and a horse on silk ...they witnessed my stay in India in 1992... The collections of old and modern icons ...the old painting of the Madonna of Guadalupe from Mexico, and last but not least the gravure of Porta Maggiore in Rome ..the biggest gate of the first Rome (Istanbul was not called the second Rome?) And a gallery of the old Turkish costumes of the Ottoman times.
And again and again books...in Turkish, Italian, English. There is also a modern flat TV with DVD player in the living room. There is a windowcase..just ask me about every small object there ...my turtle collection...the dervish my father modeled with his hands before his death without knowing that one day I would have lived here.
The small kitchen is fully furnished and ..once there you will see the squirrels. I spent a lot of time and thoughts to furnish it and to try to make it like a small business card of my life and my soul..
Welcome to the Squirrel Flat!

We were given the "Night Owl Flat" as the heating was not working in the Squirrel at the day we arrived. This was perfect as the flat is even bigger.
Marco welcomed us and showed us everything we needed to know. Although we booked on short notice he answered very fast and was easy to reach during our stay when we had questions.
The locatiom of the flat is just perfect. Easy to reach the touristic sights, Istikbal for shopping or Cihangir for exploring some nice cafés. The flat was clean and cosy and the kitchen is well equipped so you can do your own cooking if you don´t want to go out.
If I come back to Istanbul (and I´m sure I will) I would stay here again.
The Squirrel flat is very charming and comfortable. As in the photos, there is always something new to catch and delight your eye. The functioning kitchen was the first real kitchen I'd had after two other airbnb apartments in Istanbul. The studio is on the ground floor at the rear of the building. Marco communicated very quickly by email but was out of Istanbul during my stay. His associate, Paolo, was on site and was helpful. Both Paolo and Marco made me feel welcome and comfortable.
This may be an issue for some people. Music from a nearby restaurant can be heard in the apartment. The music can be constant or intermittent and can range from soft Turkish to hard dance thump-thump. Closing the kitchen door helps quite a bit.
This appartment is well located and perfect for a couple, very clean and whit all you need. Everything is close to the apartment:
Istiklar Caddesi 5 min walking
Tram stop 5 min walking
Airport shuttle 20 min walking
Sultanahmet 10 min tram
Marco is a great host, no problem whit communication.
I recommend this house to explore this fantastic city.
We had a great stay at the squirrel flat! It is definitely not a boring hotel room! There are lots of books, paintings and cute little objects.
Yes, you can hear the music from bars in the evening, but this problem is easily solved if you close windows and the kitchen door.
Marco was very quick in replying to my messages, and he recommended a couple of places to eat nearby and we loved them. We arrived very late at night and Paolo checked us in anyway, even though it was around 3 am.
That was our first time using airbnb and it was definitely not a disappointment!
Marco's place is exactly as represented in the pictures. Interesting, well kept, definitely like a museum. The flat was very clean, very well located- we were on a street just off of Istiklal so was quiet and then all the action just a minute's walk away. It's equidistant from two metro stops, both of which are about 5-10mns walk away in opposite directions along istiklal (taksim square and shishane). The walk is shorter than it sounds because there's so much action walking along Istiklal. I saw a couple reviews complaining about seagulls and noise but this was not our experience at all. My luggage was lost and I was emailing Marco constantly who was an absolute darling and very patient and helpful. We unfortunately only got to meet him the day we were leaving and I'm sorry we didn't have more time to chat with him properly. Definitely the best host you can hope for. Keep in mind, it is a studio flat so spacious for one person but my bf and I were comfortable here during our stay. The pull out sofa functioned as a doublebed easily although I suspect anyone on the taller/bigger side may have a bit more difficulty
I really enjoyed my stay in your charming flat. It is in a great location, close to everything I wanted to see. Although part of the street is very steep, my old legs made it up and down regularly with no problem and likely helped work off some of the good food I was eating. Thank you and Paolo for your help and advice.

I am a 50 years old teacher who came here 12 years ago just on a boring organized tour and with lot of prejudices about Turkey and ıstanbul...After a week in Turkey and three days in ıstanbul I got bewitched :) I m still here after 12 years. Now I retired in a tiny village close to Troy on the crystal aegean sea and I come every week to Istanbul to ...love her better as a tourist:)
I can understand all the fears ,the expectations and the excitement a western person can harbour before visiting Istanbul ...for many of you this can be a journey of life
and the city itself and the location of our flats right in the center of the old Pera will help you to enjoy the old and the new ıstanbul at its best .
I am also a mine of advice and ideas if you want to plan a tour in the other Turkey after your stay in Istanbul ...dont miss Troy, Assos and the aegean coast with Bergama Efes Selcuk and Aphrodisias along with Pamukkale and the East ...Konya Cappadocia and Mardin and the Black Sea region ...
I have been a tourist and a pilgrim to the rest of Turkey..so please feel free to make the best of my memories and my experiences there ...
