A fantastic, architect-designed, Nordic-modern, four-bedroom, two-bath cabin, tucked away down a relatively secluded dirt road in the community of Old Timberline. Flat lot, surrounded by beautiful tall trees. Walking distance to miles of trails and the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge. Easy access from within the neighborhood to the Dolly Sods Wilderness. Minutes to White Grass, Timberline Mountain, and Canaan Valley ski resorts. Or just explore the wooded wilderness behind the cabin!

The space
The cabin is a work of art! Sleek, yet cozy, with a potbelly stove, ample firewood, wood-clad walls, and towering living-room ceilings (24-feet high). Huge windows integrate the cabin with its beautiful surroundings. Behind the cabin is a magical wooded lot that extends for acres.

The cabin has lots of amenities--satellite TV, WiFi, good cell access, Wii and games, old-school Atari and games, a Samsung Frame TV (made to look like framed art work when off, to avoid sapping the charm), bluetooth speakers, turntable with vinyl records, iMac computer, books and board games, toys, dishwasher, washer-dryer, garbage disposal, crockpot, coffeemaker, microwave, and an eclectic collection of mid-century modern furniture. Plenty of closet space throughout. Very airy and bright. Lots of opening windows. Excellent ventilation. Every bedroom is a corner bedroom with windows on both exterior walls. Ceiling fans in almost every room.

The first floor features a well-stocked open-plan kitchen, dining space, and living space with a pot-belly stove. There's also a mudroom for taking on and off ski boots, laundry room, master bedroom, and a bathroom with shower. Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms and a second bathroom with tub.

There are porches off the front and back. The back porch includes a covered dining area. There is a charcoal grill in the backyard (and, typically, charcoal in the shed). Behind the cabin, there are acres of woods, a slack line, and a storage shed with a basketball hoop, balls, lawn games (croquette, corn hole), a child-size kayak, and a couple of pairs of snowshoes and bikes. There is typically stocked firewood, which you can use in the living room pot-belly stove.

Where you’ll be

Davis, West Virginia, United States

The cabin has a peaceful and private feel--located on a seldom traveled dirt road. But it's still just a 5 minute drive to the new-and-improved Timberline Mountain (under new ownership, with two newly installed high-speed lifts and revamped snowmaking). A bit further -- 10-15 minute drive -- you'll find Canaan Valley Resort and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at White Grass Touring Center. In the winter, Canaan Valley gets more snow than any region in the Mid-Atlantic (really, any eastern mountain region, outside New England)--an average 150-180' of snow per winter!

During the summer, the cabin is an amazing place to beat the heat, with easy access to all that Tucker County has to offer: some of the best hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and rafting/canoeing/kayaking in all of West Virginia. The Dolly Sods Wilderness is stunning and can be entered from a parking lot within our community. The cabin sits on the valley floor of Canaan Valley, at 3300' elevation, meaning that even during those hot summer stretches, the region remains about 15 degrees cooler than nearby eastern cities. (It's so cool that we've never needed air conditioning; the average high even at the end of July is in the mid-70s and the average low is in the mid-50s.)

Within walking distance of the cabin, there are miles of additional conservancy and nature trails. There are two lakes within Old Timberline (on which you can use the child-sized kayak). You can also walk a half mile from the cabin across an old bridge into the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge, which has miles of trails more. Or just explore the acres of forest right behind the cabin. Tromp around in snowshoes. Throw a frisbee. Try to balance on the slack line. Have a blast.

A bit further away (about 15-20 minutes), you'll find Canaan Valley State Park, Blackwater Falls State Park, and much more. The Otter Creek Wilderness area is about 30 minutes away. And Seneca Rocks is just a bit further (some of the best rock climbing in the east, and a nice swimming hole, too). About 45 minutes away, Blackwater Outdoor Adventures runs white-water rafting trips.

About 20 minutes away, you'll find the delightful mountain towns of Davis and Thomas with art galleries, great restaurants, coffee shops, breakfast spots, and music venues (the Purple Fiddle!).

My wife and I fell in love with Tucker County on our first visit, and we hope you will too.

Hi! I'm Josh. My family and I love to see the world and spend time outdoors -- hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, etc. We use Airbnb to host guests at our cabin, which is located in beautiful Canaan Valley, West Virginia -- a truly magical part of the country. We've also rented often from others when traveling to new cities and sights.

During your stay
I'm always available by cell phone. I live a couple of hours away in Virginia. But we've contracted with an on-call handyman, a local cleaning service, and a plow/mow service (which will plow the driveway but not the walk to the front door). The front door has an electronic code lock for easy access.
