Manage your expectations immediately pops into my mind regarding Las Tecas.
We were booking for our honeymoon and decided to book this place somewhat last minute. Overall Jay was helpful by email answering our questions and was always quick to respond which was appreciated. It is always hard to get a full feel for a place based in photos alone, but Jay reassured us that it would be 'perfect' and that we would 'love it'. Upon arrival we were unable to get into the place right away and did not return until later in the evening. We were definitely disappointed when we entered into the villa in that the place looked very tired and to us felt unclean. The stove was covered in grease, pots and pans were unclean, there was some mold iver the sink and fenerakky full of a mishmash of random plastics plates/cups and the shower and toliet/shower looked in need of a good scrub. The place to us felt like more of a flop house for a group of surfers looking for share accommodation as there seemed to be a very basic villa, had an abnormal amount of futons, cooking amenities were not such to make anything beyond basic things such as pasta and forget about cutting veggies with those knives. While we don't mind such places at all, given it was our honey moon and Jay's reassurance that it would be perfect, we had different expectations, especially given the price we paid.
We spent one night in the place and moved onto something much nicer, bigger, cheaper with beach access in Playa Guiones. One thing that did bother us is that Jay never reached out after the fact to ask our reason for leaving which gave the impression of being interested only in the money. We never expected to get nights refunded given a strict cancellation policy, but just seemed strange to us. The people on site running the place we're very nice though!
Overall, I think the place would suits a group of young surfers, but based on our travels we found there were much better places to stay and less costly and our tripninckuded a ton of surfing.
Zuzana made last minute plans for her
“honeymoon” and we did all we could to assist her and answered all her
questions. She also had access to the villa photos, room descriptions and prior
reviews (most are very positive and informative). Upon arrival she seemed
content and never mentioned any issues to our onsite managers, who would have
happily done their best to please her. Contrary to her comments, she NEVER
tried to contact me, and I was completely unaware that she had departed the
hotel early. Why would anyone choose to write a toxic, distorted and untruthful
review rather than simply speak to the “nice managers” (as she called them) on
site and allow them to resolve their minor issues?
We have had many other “honeymooners” stay
at Villa Las Tecas who were very happy with the value we offer which includes
large villas with private bedrooms, big kitchens, private baths with on demand
hot water, a private deck, pool and a short walk to the beach. In response to
her claims, we strive for guest happiness and satisfaction. Our villas are
clean, well equipped and maintained. There is new paint inside and out and we
are constantly upgrading and improving the hotel. How can we get so many great
reviews and repeat customers if this wasn’t true?
The kitchens have new cooking and eating
utencils, appliances have been upgraded and serviced, the property, tropical
gardens and pool are maintained to a high standard and our managers strive for
our guests comfort and satisfaction…
Here is a response by the hotel managers, Jon and Nicole:
“The first mistake that Zuzana made in her
review was admitting that they booked Las Tecas last minute. How can any
"expectations" be managed if the proper research was not done in the
first place! Her next point was that when they arrived they were not able to
get into their accommodations right away. This is because THEY TRIED TO CHECK
IN BEFORE NOON! The last patrons had just checked out at 11 and it would be
near impossible to completely turn a whole villa around in an hour. If you've
ever stayed in any type of hotel anywhere you know that check in times are
usually at least AFTER 12, and usually more like 2 or 3. As we were cleaning
the villa however, Nicole and I stopped and did all that we could to
accommodate Zuzana. They were shown the pool and places to change and even had
their things placed in a safe place and moved to the villa once it was ready.
They said they completely understood as we explained they were very early and
it would be just a bit before we were done cleaning. Apparently that
understanding on their part was false. As far as the price, it was the dead
center of holiday travel. Everything from airlines to car rentals to
accommodations has increased prices, and this does not just apply to Costa Rica
or Villa Las Tecas. Zuzana and her husband also inquired about Nicaragua and
the hopes that overall it may be much cheaper there. This lead me to believe
that a strict budget had to be met, which is fine as long as your expectations
match that of which you want to spend. Overall I think they rushed into a trip
and did not do the proper research on the area or Costa Rica in general in
order to make an educated decision on price point versus expectations.
