Lives in Cambridge, Maryland
I have studied education for most of my life. 22 years as an education division chief in the World Bank and 15 years as a professor of International Education Policy at Vanderbilt University. I am committed to assisting schools and universities in every country. In retirement I continue as journal editor and an occasional contributor to the debates on education. The Chesapeake Sunset Cottage was a labor of love. Built originally in 1923, the cottage has served many as a home. When I acquired the land, the cottage had been destroyed by an inside water leak. It was ready to be torn down. However, I was told that no one could build a house so close to water today, that the cottage's property was 'grandfathered' and if I didn't increase the 'footprint', I could rebuild it. So that is what we did. We kept the original foundation, but in terms of structure, not much else. We did, however, re-design the entry side of the cottage to look more or less like it might have looked in 1923. The waterside, however, is all glass. It is a mixture in style of Kyoto and Helsinki. Visitors seem to relax; office work comes easier, talk is more free; intimate connections to the natural world seem normal.
