Lovely Country Hideaway by the Sea

Apartment - Private room · Chacabuco, Ancud, Los Lagos, Chile

The Space

We have converted the base of our water tower into a couple of apartments with amazing views of the surrounding forest and ocean.

The tower apartment is on the second and third floors of the building. It is has a well-equipped kitchen and living room, with a sofa bed on the second floor and a double bed and bathroom on the third floor. Full amenities, including hot water and WiFi.

We are a family of five, with four dogs, chickens and a beautiful plot of land. We cook a lot and love to play, all of us are very active and creative people, each in their own way. Some of us practice yoga, so yoga practitioners are welcome to use our beautiful yoga shala by the sea for a small extra cost.

If you would like to have a yoga class, that can be arranged too! Please ask about classes when you arrive. We built our yoga shala right by the beach, so that people can practice while dolphins jump in and out of the water. Take a walk on our beautiful beach, watching the sea birds and fishing boats go by.

We love to meet new people of all ages, countries and cultures, who are open-minded, free-spirited, and respectful of all living things.

Home-cooked, gourmet meals can be arranged for an extra fee. You can share our family meals, or have a meal of your choice cooked specially. Prices vary depending on the type of meal you would like to have. We also offer a variety of breakfasts, but no lunch.

In addition, through our tourism company Austral Adventures, we can rent you bikes, kayaks, or set you up with various tours in the area. Just ask!

Our place is unique because we built it entirely ourselves, and we keep it up with love and dedication. We are fortunate to live in such an amazingly unspoiled part of the world. There is something indescribable about any experience here, and we hope to share a profound sense of peace and freedom with you.

  • Clear recommendation: Do not go there!

This was the worst experience during our four months in Chile. Even though we spoke with Sandra prior to leaving, that does not change anything that happened. Learn about our experience and decide for yourselves:
1)Airbnb reservations not respected: We reserved upstairs on September 21st but Sandra informed us in December that there had been a “double booking”. She offered us to cancel (her mistake, but we would have lost the commission!) or to change us to downstairs for the same price and offered a free dinner as compensation which we accepted. One week prior to our arrival we saw in airbnb that the department was not occupied and asked for arrival three days earlier. We got confirmation via email and phone by Sandra only to be informed 2 days later that there had been ANOTHER double booking. We had to change again. We later become friends with the people upstairs and found out that Sandra had negotiated with them during October and November for the upstairs department we had reserved on September 21st!!! Explanation offered: “I do not work with the airbnb calendar. Even though people reserve through that channel, I do not know the dates. As people can reserve through our agency as well, I work with my own calendar. And that did not synchronize with the airbnb calendar. Thus I did not know that you had already reserved 2 months before.” Assessment: Untrue. Airbnb is a global offering. If you do not respect the reservations because you work with another calendar, you are unprofessional. More likely they prefer bookings via their own agency over airbnb bookings, selling to the highest bidder. Sandra appeared to be completely disorganized and did not even know when we were supposed to leave.

2)Promises not kept: Sandra never invited us to dinner as promised. She never addressed the subject until the last day when she said that she thought we would stay longer and she wanted invite us that same night. Explanation offered: “I thought you would leave tomorrow and wanted to invite you to the dinner tonight.” Assessment: Ridiculous, our dates had been fixed with 4 months anticipation. Sandra did not even ask us once when it would be convenient for us. Totally inacceptable to offer a compensation and not live up to your promises.

3)Nobody there to receive us: We had to install ourselves alone and when Sandra and Britt arrived, nobody bothered to see us and ask whether everything was ok or if something was missing. Totally inacceptable, the minimum a host has to do is to receive his paying customers. No excuses for that!

4)Recommendation: For 76 EUR per night there are plenty of better places in town. Bigger, newer, better accessible, better equipped, with carpets that do not smell like dogs and with an organized host that cares about his guests and is not so obviously in for the money, respecting your airbnb reservations all the time.

    Response from Sandra:

I didn't get a chance to get to know Andreas and his family which was such a shame as I usually have time to help and get to know guests better. They came to drop off their language early in the morning when the apartment was not ready for them yet and we received them and talk to them a little bit before the set off for an excursion. They came across as very private and active guests which was mainly why we did not approach them much. They have many complains and we do not share their perception of the same situations. From the price they paid (which at the date of their reservation was lower than the one he mentions) to the smell of the carpet which was newly installed in December, our dogs are kept outside. To the unmentioned fact that I helped them get another accommodation for the extra three days they needed out of good will and without getting any commissions, which -to me- shows that their well being was my main interest not money as he mentions. Yes, I do accept some responsibility in ref. to some points he mentions but not they way he displays it all ... not my way of expressing. I talked to him and his wife during the last day of their stay and I felt that we clarified points of misunderstanding, however it doesn't seem to be the same for them which is a shame, his report about us and our place carries so much unnecessary anger. Their little girl is beautiful and warm and she seemed to enjoy collecting eggs from our chicken, playing with our daughter and exploring the beach. It is a shame that they seem so focused in their perception of what went wrong that forgot to celebrate and see the many beautiful things that did happened to them here.

  • We had a great time here outside of Ancud! Though getting here at first was tricky (unpaved road the taxi wouldn't go down, lack of cell phone made coordinating tricky), once we finally made it we didn't want to leave! Absolutely beautiful location close to the beach (good for swimming!) and gave us just the rest we needed. The family is lovely and welcoming, and the dogs will become your best friends within 5 minutes and follow you everywhere. This was a great place to spend the last couple days of our trip!

  • We went with my partner to this beautiful house close to the sea in Ancud. The location is amazing and our hosts, Sandra and Britt, were wonderful. They gave us recommendations and tips of things to do, such as to learn how to cook a curanto or to visit the pingüineras. I absolutely recommend this place.

  • This is one of the more incredible spots we have stayed. Sandra and Britt arranged transport from the bus terminal and we were greeted by three happy and lovable dogs. We spent the afternoon strolling on the beach with no one else in sight. As winter storms blew heavy rains across the island, we snuggled into our wonderful tower with a warm fire. Kyla's birthday happened to be during our stay and the whole family joined in the celebration: making signs, cooking and singing. When the sun finally did appear, Britt and Sandra were kind enough to rent us their truck and send us on a journey to parts of the island we never would have seen.

If you are looking to relax and detach from your normal routine, enjoy the company of a wonderful family and experience Chiloé's rustic charm and striking beauty, this is the spot.

  • An incredible experience! Not just a place to stay. If you want to have the best all around Chiloe experience you must stay here! The hideaway is a homely log cabin tucked away on a breathtaking cove just out side of town. Staying here you can really believe that the enchanting island of Chiloe is all yours. You have easy access to Ancud and all of the northern part of the island, and your own private shoreline complete with yoga studio and great dogs.

But the real experience here is the hospitality you will feel. We did not get to meet Sandra, but her family made us feel at home the whole time. Sandra's husband Brett runs a tour company and proved to be our best resource for exploring and learning the history of the island. This was a great choice for a weekend away. I cant wait to return!

  • A magical place on a magical island…hosted by a magical family. Everything was perfect during our stay. Breakfast is available for a very reasonable price—homemade bread, jams, eggs, chia seeds, maqui powder—super delicious and very healthy. I have only been back for three weeks and I am planning my next trip. Britt and Sandra are very helpful in every way, from sites to see or places to eat. Put this place on your wish list, I highly recommend!

  • We checked in for 2 days at the end of October. Beforehand, Sandra was very responsive and helpful in answering our questions as it was our first time coming to Chiloe. We were greeted by a wonderful location, as the post says, a very short walk from the beach. We enjoyed the ability to walk on a very untraveled stretch of sand and liked that we were about 10 minutes from the main town and about 30 min to the penguinera. Overall, a nice rustic feel to the building and would be a romantic and comfortable stay for 2, but with 3 people we were a little bit cramped for space and privacy. We had an issue with the fireplace during our stay and unfortunately, because of our short time there and a last minute trip by the owners, we were never able to meet Sandra and solution the problem. Even though they weren't there, though, they were responsive and understanding both during and afterwards. We would surely return for another stay, and hopefully then get to take advantage of the kayak tours they offer or yoga classes at the wonderful beachfront studio.

Thirteen years ago my husbad Britt and I came to Chiloe. He is from upstate New York and I am from a small town in the beautiful highlands of Peru. We began our life together by building a boat. Then came the house, three beautiful girls, three dogs, many chickens, some cows ... and soon a couple of horses. We have three gorgeous guest houses we have built by hand. And my passion for yoga led us to build a fantastic yoga shala by the sea. We are happy to share it all with open-minded, honest people.
