Billy had to cancel on us the day of the reservation sadly. He didn't end up actually cancelling via Air B&B but instead sent us an offer a day or so later. The offer was for much less than we had paid likely due to fees etc so we didn't accept it and asked for the full amount. He then asked us to request one on our end, but at that point because the reservation time had passed we couldn't. We had to involve Air B&B and are currently waiting on repayment. It was not clear on his listing(s) that weather conditions may require a cancellation. Our feedback is that he should outline that weather and swells in the ocean can mean he has to cancel. The weather reports we saw were wonderful so he needed to explain that swells were predicted. This would allow people the opportunity to prepare. There were many available B and Bs so it wasn't a big problem and he was nice about it offering to take us for a ride in the harbour but we were bummed. We are understanding that if he has to cancel via AirB&B frequently it would be very costly for him so we were happy to accept an offer if it was the full amount. He should rethink how to deal with frequent cancellations via Air B and B. and make this very clear in the details of his listing.
We do not like cancelling reservations, however if the weather is not suitable we have no other choice. It is stated on our listing all sailings are weather dependant, this means if the weather is not suitable the boats will not bring passengers out. In this case, we offer a full refund on our side however we accept that Air BnB have a service charge of 12% service fee for guests and 3% service fee for hosts which is not refundable. This is why the refund is lower than what you paid. When an Air BnB account is set up this is explained and people should be aware of this. On the day in question the weather was not suitable, however we could only make this decision on the day we had to cancel and we do not bring people out if it not safe to do so. In this case a full refund is given less Air BnB's service fees, which we feel is fair as Air BnB provide a great service.
Sorry for any inconvenience
We had a fantastic night on the Blaskets, the room was very comfortable. The services are basic as the Island is without electricity but this only adds to its charm. Cillian and Geraldine were very welcoming. If you are looking for a really unique experience in one of the most beautiful places in the world then a night on the Blaskets is a must!
This is one of the magic places. A place steeped with history and wildlife and so very, very beautiful. It wasn't my first visit to the island or the hostel but it was my first time staying with Cillian at the helm. I am most impressed that the hostel is as basic as it should be and still cosy and comfortable. Anything more would be out of place in the middle of the wild, natural beauty and preserving the feel of the place as closely as possible to how it once may have been, only adds to the experience. I hope this doesn't change.
Met some wonderful people staying in the hostel and Cillian was a perfect combination of welcoming helpfulness while respecting an island visitor's desire for peacefulness.
Would recommend this to anyone looking to get away from the busyness of the modern world, technology etc.
