PLEASE NOTE - THIS LISTING IS FOR 1 -2 people - no exceptions, no guests. You must indicate the number of guests at the time of booking. Please understand that you cannot book 1 guest, then show up with 2! You must have at least one (positive) review on airbnb, and your profile must have a description (not just "Hi, I'm Susie"), including a photo. We do not accept "third party" bookings, so if you are looking for space for friends/family, they must have their own profile, and at least one positive review, and must contact us directly.
We do not charge a cleaning fee, so ask that you leave the place tidy.
Please read our reviews as Airbnb guests and hosts, to see what others have said. We have few guest reviews here because we are full year-round via C/L, and use this site just occasionally.
Please read the entire posting, including house rules, before contacting us. Note that we have two indoor/outdoor cats, so this may not be the right place if you are allergic.
Please make sure that your airbnb profile includes a photograph (of you, not your dog:), and describes who you are (where you work/go to school, etc), and why you need temporary housing. These are the only requests we'll consider.
Our place is suitcase/laptop ready, and is a flat, 2.5 block walk from the North Berkeley BART station.
The rental area is the entire top floor of our 80+ year old home. Bright master bedroom (approximately 14'x12') has a south/west facing private terrace with table/chairs/umbrella (smoking is permitted on the terrace only). Queen bed with a firm memory foam mattress, small sofa, dresser, desk/chair, closet, WIFI. Bedding and towels are provided.
The second room is set up as a sitting room, and has a sofa, small TV with basic cable, small refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, tea boiler, and basic dishes/utensils (paper and "real" dishes, whichever you prefer). This area is meant for light food prep only, as there is NO kitchen access. You will need to clean any dishes in the bathroom sink. Please note: this rental is self-catering (meaning we do not provide food).
Your private bathroom with shower and separate tub, is between the master bedroom and the sitting room.
There are 9 stairs from the entry of the house to the rental space - you will need to be able to carry your bags up and down.
A few notes....
We will ask that you remove your shoes before entering the house (so bring your comfy slippers:). You can bring your shoes inside, or leave them on the front porch), but we ask that you not wear them while you are in the house.
We have two sweet cats who spend most of their time outdoors. When they are in the house, we keep them in our rooms, so you're not likely to see them. We are NOT able to host your pet.
We tend to keep the house very cool, but your rooms have space heaters, so you can control the temperature yourself.
We like to give our guests maximum privacy - we live on the main level and lower level of the three-level house, and you may not see us during your stay :) This situation is particularly well-suited to those who are looking for a very independent environment.
We seek respectful, quiet guests who will appreciate the tranquil space we have created. If you're looking forward to late night partying, or if you are interested in having a high level of contact with your hosts, you may find a better match elsewhere.
Please note that we get up early to prepare for work (5:30 AM). While we try to be quiet, if you are a light sleeper, or seek monastic silence, this may not be the right situation for you. Also, you'll likely hear the Amtrak train whistle (1+ mile away). The train whistle can be heard from just about anywhere in Berkeley, even up in the hills. Bottom line regarding noise...if you are a light sleeper, you may want to bring earplugs, or look elsewhere.
Access to washer/dryer in the basement.
VERY CONVENIENT LOCATION: 2.5 blocks north of the North Berkeley BART station. Monterey Market, Gioia Pizza, Espresso Roma, Magnani Poultry, Country Cheese, are 3 blocks blocks from the house. We are approximately a 20 minute walk (through a residential neighborhood) to the Westbrae Biergarten, Chez Panisse/Gourmet Ghetto/Cheeseboard/Peets Coffee, Philz Coffee, Farm Burger, Whole Foods, Safeway, Andronico's, Trader Joe's, Thursday Farmer's Market, and Wednesday night "Off The Grid" food trucks. North Berkeley offers fine dining as well as fantastic, inexpensive take-out. We are also a short walk from a public swimming pool, tennis court, running track, public library, the Ohlone Greenway, and two parks.
Local bus (AC Transit) stops at the corner (this bus goes to the UCBerkeley campus, among other places).
If you'll bring a car: parking is typically available right in front of our house. We are in a permit zone, which means that M-F, parking is restricted to 2 hours between the hours of 10AM-6PM. You CAN park overnight during the week + all day Saturday/Sunday. HOWEVER, approximately 1 block away, on Cedar Street, it is not a permit zone, so you can park there any time.
If you are a morning commuter to San Francisco, you can take advantage of casual carpooling at the BART station - a free morning commute M-F.
Rental area only - master bedroom including private terrace, as well as private sitting room and private bathroom. Please note there is NO access to back yard or kitchen. You will have your own key, so you can come and go as you please.

Other Things to Note
When booking, please do not make a request through the site without a personal message. We need to have some sort of interaction with the people who will be staying with us before we accept. After all, you're going to be staying in our home!
2 people maximum, no exceptions, and no guests.
We ask that you not wear shoes in the house.
No smoking in the house, but you are welcome to smoke tobacco (not dope!) on your private terrace - but please close the door, so the smoke stays outside.
Other than that, we simply ask you to treat our home the way you'd want us to treat yours :), and enjoy your stay.
I spent a whole month with Cindy and JF. Most Airbnb hosts wouldn't like their guests to stay as long as a whole month, so I had to move every two or three weeks during my previous visits to Berkeley. I must say this is my BEST Airbnb experience EVER!
Cindy and JF were very kind and considerate, made me really feel at home. It was a pity that I couldn't meet them more frequently because of my schedule.
The location was very convenient, only 2.5 blocks away from North Berkeley BART station. The house was just wonderful, I guess it was too luxury for me. It was clean, bright, and well maintained. I had private access to a whole floor with all accessories I needed.
Ah... As a foreigner, my English is just too poor to express my satisfaction. Airbnb should allow users to pay for extra stars :)
Lovely place - the photos don't do it justice. The bedroom is comfortable, spacious enough for the couch and the desk, and the deck just outside is covered in plants and flowers. The private bathroom and sitting room are also nice. We felt really comfortable coming home to the house. Cindy was easy to communicate with and available when we needed her, but we didn't cross paths after we arrived, which was really nice for a sense of privacy. Overall, it was one of the best Airbnb experiences we've had.
Cin and JF are wonderful hosts. They are available for questions and directions when needed, yet leave the amount of privacy up to the guests. Cin was very helpful with directions and dining suggestions. The two room suite was private with a beautifully landscaped balcony. The space was clean with plenty of linens and other needed items such as soap, towels, plenty of outlets, and light. Easy access to the BART. We would stay there again.
this place is an incredible value for the area. i already miss having my coffee on that terrace!
the location is central to fabulous food stores and cafes as well as only 2 blocks from bart.
the bed, linens and towels are all high quality and cindy and jf were prompt to assist me if i asked for help and otherwise let me enjoy my privacy. in other words, the perfect hosts!
I stayed with Cin and JF for two weeks while I was looking for an apartment in the area. It was the perfect base for this period. The suite is very comfortable, quiet and clean, with a delightful terrace. Great location. Cin and JF are very kind, attentive and tactful hosts.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay with Cin and JF. They were excellent hosts - very friendly and generous, offering all kinds of helpful information about Berkeley and the Bay area. Their place was lovely and felt like my home away from home. Plus it was very convenient to transportation and local amenities. I couldn't have asked for anything more, and will definitely return.
About the Host, Cin And JF
We are an easy going 60-ish married couple/grandparents. JF is from Norway, Cindy is American. We're both employed, but when we're not working, we enjoy travel, bicycling, hiking, cooking, reading, movies, photography, and gardening. We tend to be very quiet, and give our guests maximum privacy. We're new to airbnb, but have been happily renting part of home for several years. As guests, we will respect your House Rules, and treat your home as if it were our own. We've done many private rentals in the US and abroad, it is our preferred way to see the world, and we enjoy welcoming people into our home.
