What a amazing view for the condo! You can jump to the ocean everyday!
This is the first mixed review we've ever had to write. I'll start with the good and then talk about the not so good parts.
THE GOOD: The location is absolutely amazing. You're right on the water of Kealakua Bay, with waves crashing up against the rocks just 100 feet away from you. Rental of the unit allows free access to ocean kayaks that you can use to kayak the bay to snorkel, see pods of spinner dolphins, and, in the right season, humpback whales. The first trip out we took we had a pod of dolphins swim around us while we were snorkeling and whales surfacing several hundred feet away from us. It was INCREDIBLE. There is a magnificent cliff that serves as the backdrop as well. The property manager Amma is very attentive and is on site all day. She also gives great kayak instruction to make even beginners feel comfortable. So this is the good - absolutely magical location and free kayaking on the best snorkeling bay on the big island.
THE NOT-SO-GOOD: This is the 'economy' unit and it really shows. Originally this was the open space under the house and they have built walls around it and furnished it. But the construction was very poorly done. When we moved in, there was a crack about a inch wide along the wall next to my bed, allowing the huge island cockroaches in. Amma had this sealed the next day, which made a big difference. In general, there were a lot of dead cockroaches - dead because of the poison they put out, but in the apartment because it is so poorly sealed overall. If you are tall like I am (6 feet), you need to constantly stoop so as not to hit your head on the beams. I got a very cramped neck and shoulders by the time we left. While the bugs and low ceilings were a problem, the unit was otherwise livable. SUMMARY: For this unit, you're really renting for the location and kayaks, not the unit itself. If you are squeamish about bugs, this might not be the best match for you. The cottage and upstairs are much nicer. We stayed in their cottage after this and LOVED it. I'd recommend the cottage over this unit.
We stayed here for a week and had the best time on the Big Island. The kayak launch is so handy as well as just being able to wake up and snorkel with dolphins and around the captain cook monument area. Amazing to wake up with the view outside our window. Perfect spot for our family of 4 with two older boys. We stayed downstairs with two big bedrooms, two bathrooms, nice kitchen and living area and five beds to choose from. Would recommend this property to anyone looking for the best the island has to offer.
