About this listing
A bright and sunny converted stable in the grounds of a period house, surrounded by extensive gardens, including a listed walled vegetable garden. The cottage has the feel of a country retreat, but is walking distance from the local village.
The Cottage reflects its past while it embraces its lovingly restored present! A small entrance hall leads to a bright but cosy modern kitchen with a kitchen table big enough to sit around and chat. (there is an electric oven, microwave, fridge, washing machine and dishwasher.) We have fully equipped it with utensils and plates etc for up to four people to self cater during their stay.
Leading from the kitchen, the living room is inviting and opens on to it's own private south facing garden. A wood burning stove provides the option for atmosphere or additional warmth on a cold evening. Handmade paper with Japanese woodblock prints hang on the walls of this room alongside some work by other Kilkenny based artists. Guests are welcome to make use of the bookcase we have filled with a mixture of interesting reading matter. The coffee table has been designed and made locally using recyled materials and is a good place to rest a cup of coffee while reading the papers.
Although the main bathroom is located upstairs there is a small downstairs cloak room/toilet off the entrance hall.
Two bedrooms on the upper floor provide ample space for up to four people. The main double bedroom is a large light filled space with good storage. The smaller bedroom also has a double bed, due to its size it has no storage. We can provide a travel cot if required for either room.
An eclectic mix of furniture and art adorns the walls and corners of the cottage which reflects both its owners and the local availability of art and craft in Kilkenny. The cottage has ample parking for up to 3 cars.
Guests will have full use of the cottage and their own private south facing garden.
They are welcome to visit the walled garden where we grow fruit and vegetables and keep chickens.
Interaction with Guests
We will welcome our guests on arrival and familiarise them with the accommodation. We are happy to help and advise if needed but will very much respect their privacy. We will also provide a complementary basket of logs for your first night stay.
The cottage is a short walk from The Castlecomer Discovery Park on the grounds of the Wandesforde Estate with it's arboretum, with woodland walks, tree top walk adventure, children's playground and fishing lakes. There is also a visitors centre housing a mining museum and an award winning cafe. Artists, craftspeople, jewellers, hand painted up cycled furniture and a stone carver can also be found in the Craft yard adjacent to the woodland walk. Horse riding can be arranged at the local riding stables Local supermarkets, vegetable shops, butchers, pubs, chemists, beauticians are all within walking distance from the house to the village. Other local attractions include Haywood gardens / Craft trail / Kilkenny City / Trail Kilkenny River walks
The cottage is located 19 km from Kilkenny City and a five minute stroll to the heart of Castlecomer village and it's local amenities.
It is 100 km from Dublin (one hour and 20 mins) or 115 km from Dublin airport ( one hour 30 mins) drive. You can get a bus from the airport to Castlecomer, which also goes on to Kilkenny. Bus Eireann has a service from Kilkenny train station to Castlecomer.
Other Things to Note
The Cottage was a former stables, as such it is attached to the main house. However there is enough distance from the main house to ensure a quiet stay as my art studio situated in the old coach house, separates the main house from the cottage in such a way it ensures the cottages privacy. The cottage is not over looked in any way.
This is a non smoking house but you may smoke in the garden
The house and cottage is tucked away and you don't even see it from the road until you go along their private drive which opens up into a beautiful glen. Polly was home when we arrived and immediately welcomed us with fresh scones and showed us around her grounds. She maintains a substantial vegetable and flower garden behind a fence and we were invited to partake. The cottage was charming with a kitchen, living room leading to a private yard and half bath on the first floor as well as two bedrooms and a full bath upstairs. It was very quiet and private and ideally situated to allow us to travel the surrounding areas. Polly urged us to seek her help with anything--brought us some detergent to use the washing machine in the cottage so we could do some laundry since we'd been away for a week already, and treated us as old friends rather than strangers. A lovely place to spend time!
A delightful little house in gorgeous grounds. Polly has decorated it beautifully, and we really enjoyed getting to know her and Ivan, who couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. Would love to stay again on future trips
Our stay at Polly's home was absolute perfection. My girlfriend, myself, and two friends stayed at their cottage in Castlecomer for 2 nights and it has been the absolute highlight of the trip thus far. The home is gorgeously decorated, cozy, comfortable, and inviting; it would be totally worth it for just two people, let alone having two bedrooms so that the four of us could enjoy the space together! The full kitchen and glorious patio enabled us to have a thoroughly enjoyable meal cooked in, and the little town of Castlecomer provided what everyone visiting Ireland should desperately be seeking: a true Irish town experience. We met locals, drank Guinness, and were still quite close to the Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny. I can't imagine not staying at Polly's if you plan on visiting anywhere outside of Dublin in Ireland. The highest possible recommendation!
Polly's lovely home and warm hospitality is set in an idyllic, secluded and rustic Irish village. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and especially enjoyed the fire she showed us to make, her garden she invited to enjoy and fresh air we got away from the city. Polly and Ivan's home is a great location to explore much of the southern parts of Ireland. She was warm and inviting as we enjoyed scones, fresh eggs and a warm Irish welcome. We ventured to Kilkenny, Waterford and beyond.
Polly was very welcoming. We had scones on arrival, a jar full of biscuits and a gorgeous house to stay in for the weekend. 5/5. Highly recommend.
Great cottage, Polly was very nice and flexible. We had a wonderful stay.
Très beau cottage, Polly était très gentille et flexible, son mari parle bien français. Nous avons passé un très bon séjour.
Thank you Polly!
We had the best stay at Polly & Ivan's cottage. I'm dreaming of staying here for a month some summer, it's that cozy. Two days was not enough.
The cottage is small but it was the perfect size for our family of 4 (one of the bedrooms has a low, cheery double bed for the kids). The cottage is well furnished and full of great art and ceramics.
There was milk, bread, tea, jam & eggs (from Polly's chickens) waiting for us. Polly also left us some toys and books for the kids (thanks again!).
The cottage is attached to their lovely period house (but entirely private), right on the edge of the village, so you can walk to the store, walk to the park and great shops at the Discovery Park, and best of all is their walled vegetable garden, a wonderful spot to relax, picnic, drink wine, hunt for snails...I could spend hours in there.
It's a 20 min easy drive to Kilkenny, great location--spend the day in the Kilkenny and retreat to this gem.
