A bright and sunny converted stable in the grounds of a period house, surrounded by extensive gardens, including a listed walled vegetable garden. The cottage has the feel of a country retreat, but is walking distance from the local village.
The Cottage reflects its past while it embraces its lovingly restored present! A small entrance hall leads to a bright but cosy modern kitchen with a kitchen table big enough to sit around and chat. (there is an electric oven, microwave, fridge, washing machine and dishwasher.) We have fully equipped it with utensils and plates etc for up to four people to self cater during their stay.
Leading from the kitchen, the living room is inviting and opens on to it's own private south facing garden. A wood burning stove provides the option for atmosphere or additional warmth on a cold evening. Handmade paper with Japanese woodblock prints hang on the walls of this room alongside some work by other Kilkenny based artists. Guests are welcome to make use of the bookcase we have filled with a mixture of interesting reading matter. The coffee table has been designed and made locally using recyled materials and is a good place to rest a cup of coffee while reading the papers.
Although the main bathroom is located upstairs there is a small downstairs cloak room/toilet off the entrance hall.
Two bedrooms on the upper floor provide ample space for up to four people. The main double bedroom is a large light filled space with good storage. The smaller bedroom also has a double bed, due to its size it has no storage. We can provide a travel cot if required for either room.
An eclectic mix of furniture and art adorns the walls and corners of the cottage which reflects both its owners and the local availability of art and craft in Kilkenny. The cottage has ample parking for up to 3 cars.
Guests will have full use of the cottage and their own private south facing garden.
They are welcome to visit the walled garden where we grow fruit and vegetables and keep chickens.
Interaction with Guests
We will welcome our guests on arrival and familiarise them with the accommodation. We are happy to help and advise if needed but will very much respect their privacy. We will also provide a complementary basket of logs for your first night stay.
The cottage is a short walk from The Castlecomer Discovery Park on the grounds of the Wandesforde Estate with it's arboretum, with woodland walks, tree top walk adventure, children's playground and fishing lakes. The cottage is located 19 km from Kilkenny City and a five minute stroll to the heart of Castlecomer village and it's local amenities.
It is 100 km from Dublin (one hour and 20 mins) or 115 km from Dublin airport ( one hour 30 mins) drive. You can get a bus from the airport to Castlecomer, which also goes on to Kilkenny. Bus Eireann has a service from Kilkenny train station to Castlecomer.
Other Things to Note
The Cottage was a former stables, as such it is attached to the main house. However there is enough distance from the main house to ensure a quiet stay as my art studio situated in the old coach house, separates the main house from the cottage in such a way it ensures the cottages privacy. The cottage is not over looked in any way.
This is a non smoking house but you may smoke in the garden
We had a great time in Polly's and Ivan's cottage. Communication was smooth, and they were very welcoming (with the fire lit and cookies, bread & jam provided!) Polly showed us around and told us how they turned the old stable into a lovely bright, homey cottage. They have an eye for fresh designs, comfort and up-cycling, and decorated the cottage with some fascinating local artworks.
The cottage is bigger than it seems on the pics- it makes for a perfect place to relax and unwind. Only a few mins walk from the lovely village and the woodlands where you can go for a stroll and have amazing lunch at the beautiful cafe/ art centre/ mining museum. We'd love to go back some time!
What a charming lovely cottage that is even nicer than the pictures convey. We travelled with a two year old and the cottage was perfect for her with loads of toys and a special chair that she loved. Ivan and Polly made us feel very welcome, there were scones on arrival and even brought our daughter to collect the resident chickens freshly laid eggs every morning. They were the perfect hosts! We wanted a chilled out weekend and this is exactly what we got. Would highly recommend!
We had a wonderful stay in Polly and Ivan's cottage. Its picturesque inside and out and in a great location about 15min drive from Kilkenny city. We were provided with some lovely goodies for breakfast, including free range eggs from Polly's hens. The wood burning stove in the sitting room is so cosy and the little details about the cottage made it feel so homey. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay- a real country retreat!:)
Ha sido genial poder pasar unos dias en casa de Polly. Tiene una casa muy bonita y bien equipada en la que hemos disfrutado de unos dias de descanso en familia. Nos hemos sentido muy bien tratados por Polly que es encatadora y toda su familia
Stayed in this beautiful cottage as a base for a work trip. Lovely location, so convenient for all our travel requirements. The hosts couldn't have been more warm, friendly and helpful. Would love to return for a holiday next time!
My daughter spent a lovely weekend in Polly's cottage;
The cottage is perfect for a country getaway from Dublin. A stove was lit when we arrived late on a Friday evening and the cottage was warm and cosy all weekend.
Polly supplied some lovely breakfast supplies for the first morning and had a selection of tea and coffee on offer also.
The cottage is even nicer than in the photos and has been thoughtfully and tastefully decorated through out.
Castlecomer is a stones throw from the cottage, and we visited the nearby Discovery Park for a lovely winter walk and a browse of the craft shops at the park too.
Polly was also happy to make some helpful recommendations for bars/restaurants in Castlecomer and Kilkenny.
We had a perfect weekend, the cottage was wonderful value and and I would definitely stay again.
This Kilkenny cottage is charming and very well equipped in a quiet corner of Castlecomer. A short drive (15 mins) from Kilkenny city, it is well situated to explore the area.
Polly is a very thoughtful host and her creative touch can be seen in every room of the cottage, from relaxing colours to beautiful candles to fresh flowers. A lovely home from home to stay in. I would highly recommend a visit.
I am an artist who runs the primary arts education programme for The Design & Crafts Council of Ireland. I live in a period house next to The Cottage at Donaguile, with my husband Ivan, our two teenagers, Max & Eloise, our beloved dogs Rosie & Saoirse and Angel Boy the cat. We love to travel as a family and appreciate new cultures and experiences.
