Our home serves as a temporary residence for many different musicians, artists, academics, & business people. We aim to have everybody arrive in our home a visitor, but leave as a friend.
In fact, what makes our house unique is that we have now served as hosts to people from all over the world and sometime at the same time. We started doing this when I took a job as the Midwest Coordinator for an International High School Student Exchange Program and got to know how easy it was meeting people from around the world. Since then, and hosting many Northwestern Graduate Students working on their Masters in our home, our friends have taken to calling our house the "Gertrude Stein Home of Evanston", which I take as a compliment. They explain this by saying, each time they meet someone at our home, they know they are going to learn something new. They also have said that they have been impressed to see that not only are these people living in our home, but they can see that they have become our friends. And, they love the comeradie they feel which emenates from our home. If only we could bottle that and sell it to the world, eh?
Being located, just 1 block from the train, we are extremely well-located for university students, not only of Northwestern U., but also Loyola Univ., Northeastern Univ. & DePaul Univ.
Recently, Northwestern University, was voted #4 in a recent poll concerning the most walkable campuses. The only university towns voted more walkable were:
1. Cambridge, MA Walk Score 87 (Harvard University and MIT)
2. Berkeley, CA Walk Score 79 (University of California at Berkeley)
3. Providence, RI Walk Score 76 (Brown University)
4. Evanston, IL Walk Score 74 (Northwestern University
Evanston is home to Northwestern University and boasts tree-lined lakefront paths for biking/jogging, a vibrant shopping district, dozens of ethnically diverse restaurants, live music venues, movie theaters and more. Northwestern, and the lakefront, are only a few minutes away.
Evanston has many of the best Midwestern tourists attractions within a day's reach. It is a great place to base yourself whether your visiting for purposes of Northwestern University, or you want to experience Chicago.
Our home, built in 1888, located in the EVANSTON LAKEFRONT HISTORIC DISTRICT, is just blocks south of the NU campus. Although our home is vintage, it has all of the modern amenities a person needs for 21st century lifestyles. We have central air and heat, cable TV and wireless internet everywhere in the house and yard.
It is one block to a Whole Foods, and there is a Trader Joe's behind our house on Chicago Ave. (TJ's is an upscale Aldi's owned by the other German brother.) Our home is located just 3 blocks west of Lake Michigan and a block east of the train to downtown Chicago, which is approximately 25 minutes away. If you have kids, we also have a play lot across the street and several along the lakefront.
We also have 2 little white/black toy fox terrier dogs that I've never heard as much as a growl from. They have always been great at making friends w/ people. Recently, we had two young men with us. A young German man from Wiesbaden who had never had a dog before. Six months later, he was so in love with these pupettes, that I think, if he would have tried to take one more picture on his phone, it might have exploded! haaaa. Then there was Yuong (Tony) Liu, from China. He also had never had a dog and at first was very frightened of dogs. He would walk towards them and if they started to approach him, he would turn on his heels and walk very fast the other way. Well after some coaching, Tony, too fell in love w/ these two little harmless pupettes. The worse these two can do is shed some of that white fur on you, which I'm always trying to control, but....

I've lived in Chicago for all of my life and there is not a neighborhood in Chicago that I am not familiar with. My husband is from Mystic, CT,, which is off of the Atlantic, and has learned to use Lake Michigan to answer his love of living near a large body of water. We will respect your privacy but also happily assist you with anything you might need to make your stay in Chicago more enjoyable. See our profile for more information about us
WHAT IS THE HINMAN HOUSE SPACE LIKE...
Unlike most Victorian era homes, all of the rooms in the Hinman Home are quite large. In addition, the first thing you will notice is how high the ceilings are. At 12' high, it adds to this feeling of spaciousness that everybody feels upon entering our home. It has 5 bedrooms and 2.5 baths
If you were to ask someone to describe what style our home is, I believe the best answer would be eclectic! If we like something, it can come into our home. There is no one style!
With WiFi available throughout the house, guest are free to work just about anywhere they wish on the first floor since the living room is a pleasant place to work in with lots of light. Besides the downstairs living room, guests are welcome to use the kitchen, can work in the family room, the dining room, the screened in outside porch, or use our BBQ grill and outdoor patio. Sue and her husband were the best of hosts. Their Victorian house is perfectly located, warm, clean, and totally my style. I loved the neighborhood, which is several blocks from the Lake and campus of Northwestern. For Chicago, this is as good as it gets. Really loved staying there.
Sue and Tim were awesome hosts. The location is perfect place to enjoy the lake and explore downtown Evanston. The room is very comfortable and spacious.
The location was perfect for traveling into the city of Chicago, with the train station within 5 minutes walking distance, and for enjoying the restaurants, the lake shore, and Northwestern University. The host was very gracious and provided enough space in their Victorian home. There are several rooms available in the house, and if I had to complain about one thing (I stayed in the main bedroom), it would be about the shower and the inability of doors to close completely. Overall, an affordable and admirable stay!
We really enjoyed our stay at Sue's house. The location is excellent, close to the lake and downtown, the subway near, and the house is spacious and clean. Sue and Tim were extremely friendly and hospitable and their two dogs sweet as can be. We would definitely return.
Sue is such a lovely, welcoming hostess! My daughter and I recently visited Sue with our relative from Germany. Sue was charming and made us feel we now have a home here. Her house is perfectly situated: around the corner from great restaurants, night clubs and grocery stores, two blocks from several of the cutest beaches, several blocks from Northwestern U.'s campus, and two blocks from transit into the city. We loved chatting while making breakfast and touring downtown Evanston with Sue. We will stay with Sue again whenever we visit Chicago!
My family stayed at Sue's place for three days and were very happy of their experience. Very well welcomed even though they spoke little English. The place was great, conveniently located and the hosts were warm and welcoming. Thank you, Sue.
As so many other reviews have said, this is a wonderful home with wonderful hosts (Tim and Sue are so very friendly), and they are most open to sharing their vintage Victorian with us weary, busy travelers. There were 3 of us and Sue made sure we had all we needed to feel truly at home, and the sleeping was deep and restful in brass beds! The drive to downtown Chicago was most easy, and her home is steps away from the train, which takes you anywhere in Chicago. Blind Faith (organic) Cafe is 1/4 block away, and my favorite place for dinner. Two grocery stores are just a block or 2 around the corner. If you are traveling to Chicago and want to be close to amenities and be in a lovely, tree lined neighborhood where everyone keeps their home and yard looking great, this is the place to stay. Sue is great for chats over tea, so take the time and she won't disappoint. I would stay there anytime in the future.
Really enjoyed my stay with Sue and Tim. They have a lovely home close to both the parks and downtown area. A real treat and close to the CTA/Merta lines too! This was my first time in the Evanston area- a lovely town with old world charm and modern day conveniences. Looking forward to my next visit.
This was our first time using (website hidden) and it was a great experience! We thoroughly enjoyed staying with Sue and Tim in their beautiful home. The rooms are comfortable and the house felt warm and inviting. We were in Evanston for a weekend to see our daughter at Northwestern. Both Sue & Tim could not be more accommodating or kind. When we changed our flights and arrived earlier, Sue told us to come on over. Upon waking in the mornings we always smelled a fresh pot of coffee. They're just down to earth good people! We'll be back!!
