VILLA MOUNTAIN SERENITY FAQs:
Q. will I need a car?
Yes, the home is in the gated community of Cascada Azul, situated approximately 3 miles (7km) from the beach --2.5 miles on a beautifully paved highway, and the last 1/2 mile on maintained gravel road into the coastal mountains. A car, preferably a 4WD, is recommended. There is a tiny convenience store or “soda,” as they are called in Costa Rica, in the hamlet of Baru, about a mile and a half away, but it would be a strenuous and long hike. For groceries, restaurants/bars, beaches, stores, etc. you would require transportation to the town of Dominical. Several taxi services are available.
Q. is there someone in Costa Rica who can assist me while I am there?
Yes, once you book the home, you will be put in touch with our local property managers, who can assist you with key handling, etc.
Q. is there a beach nearby that will be easy to get to?
The closest beach is Playa Dominical, approximately 3 miles away. This beach, however, has enormous waves (it is a world-class surfing destination) and also has a dangerous rip tide. Although the only beach in the area with life guards, I would not recommend it for casual swimming, especially for children. There are two other beaches we favor, down the coast near the next town of Uvita, Playas Ballena and Ventanas. Dominicalito, just adjacent Playa Dominical, is also generally calmer, but a bit rocky.
Q. if we fly into the San Jose airport, how long is the drive to the house?
About 3 to 3.5 hours, depending upon traffic and stops, via the new Caldera highway, or 4+ hours on the older Rt. 2 through San Isidro El General. You can also fly into Quepos via regional air, and it's a 30 minute drive down the coast.
Q. would it be difficult to find??
We will provide clear directions, and the home is just off a major highway, and just a few kilometers off the Costañera Highway (34).
Q. are there restaurants and shopping close by?
Dominical is a rustic surfer town about 7km (3+ miles) away from the Cascada Azul community, and has a nice selection for casual dining. You can find Mexican, Thai, Italian, “Typical Costa Rican,” even a deli/bakery that serves awesome smoothies and great lunchtime sanwiches. Nearby hotels, such as Roca Verde and Rio Mar offer dining and bars. For shopping, you may wish to visit the bustling tourist town of Manuel Antonio (30 minutes drive north) which has souvenir, jewelry, and art/craft shops and many lively restaurants (I recommend a trip to Manuel Antonio, anyway, for the national park).
Q. are there excursions and activities close by?
Yes, yes, yes! Again, you can find many detailed on the house's web site, but there are spectacular waterfalls, including one right on the common property which is an adventure to hike to, the famous Nauyaca Falls only a few kilometers down the road, horseback tours, zip lining, and nature centers all within 10 miles. There are dozens of picturesque, quiet beaches all the way up and down the Southern Pacific coast near Dominical. You could easily go to a different one each day for more than a week!
Q. What are 10 cool things to do in Dominical?
This is a particularly great blog post of great things to do in the Dominical area:
For surfers, Playa Dominical has a famous left and right beach surf break, and waves 95% of the year. The same conditions attractive for surfers, however, can make it treacherous for swimmers. Playa Dominical can have dangerous rip tides. There are lifeguards present, but for calmer waters, Playa Ballena, and Playa Ventanas are preferable. Playa Dominicalito, next to Dominical, is also known for less intense waves and currents, but is rockier.
Q. is it in a quiet neighborhood?
Yes, Villa Mountain Serenity is in a gated community with other homes, but it is on a very private plantel. It is the best of both worlds, because while there are people nearby, the property, pool, and home are quite private.
Q. is there a grocery store close by?
A small market in Dominical, about 3.5 miles away has almost everything you would need. For larger shopping, there is a bigger supermarket in Uvita, about 20 minutes down the coast, or there is a large MegaSuper in San Isidro El General, the largest nearby city about 35 minutes up into the Talamanca mountain range.
Q. does the house have internet?
Yes, the house is equipped with WiFi for internet connection.
Q. what is the weather like?
You can expect about 85+ degrees at the beach year round. The only difference in climate year round is that April/May-November is the "green," or rainy season, and December through March/April is the dry season. The temperature at the house is always a few degrees cooler because it is around 1000ft. elevation, and you get mountain breezes.
Likewise, because of its proximity to the equator, the sunrise sunset are constant year-round at approximately 6am/6pm.
Q. which rooms have air conditioning?
There are two bedrooms with a/c: the master bedroom on the second floor, and the bedroom on the first floor with a double bed. There is not a/c throughout the rest of the home, but there are ceiling fans in each room and generally there is a mountain breeze.
Q. will I need to bring anything with me?
You need not bring any household items -- all bedding, tableware, towels, cookware etc., are all provided. Bring only your personal items, and a sense of adventure and/or relaxation!
Q. what are the rental terms?
The rates depend upon the season and are roughly as follows:
Green Season May 01-Jun 30 and Aug 16-Nov 15: $900/week
High Season Dec 01-Apr 30 and Jul 01-Aug 15: $1,095/week
Peak Season Dec 20-Jan 10: $1,795/week
Please note our cancellation policy prior to booking, and we also require a $300 security deposit, in case things are damaged or stolen. For people bringing pets, the security deposit may be greater, depending upon the circumstances.
There are no words. This place is pure magic. The house is lovely, the backyard and pool area is comfortable and beautiful, and the setting on top of the mountain is beyond perfect (that view!). We had 6 adults (3 couples) and were all very comfortable in the house. I actually bought the same hammock in the backyard at a vendor stand in Dominical to try and take a piece of this place back home with me!
Dominical is such an adorable town, and there is so much to do right near the house - we never had to drive more than a half hour to any of the activities we had planned. Some of my favorite things we did - ziplining through Osa Canopy Tours, a day tour of Corcovado through Dolphin Tours, and a hike/beach day at Manuel Antonio.
If you book this house you will not regret it!
I've tried writing a review for this beautiful location on three different days. And each time I start writing, my eyes well up with tears. This was our first trip to Costa Rica, and I fell in love immediately. Now I sit in a frozen Atlanta mess, looking back at last week, and all I want to do is sit in Villa Mountain Serenity, look over the green hills, watch the toucans and hummingbirds, and cook a great meal while watching the sun set over the Pacific.
I was doing all of that last week. I also surfed, zip lined, watched dolphins (but no whales), jumped off Nauyaca water falls, and lounged on Playa Ventanas, Playa Dominicalito, Playa Dominical, and the beaches in Manuel Antonio park.
This region has it all, and no house could've been better than Villa Mountain Serenity. Do your life a favor and book it. Pura Vida!
This place is fantastic. The photos don't do the view justice. And the pool! What a treat.
Our mornings were spent watching the butterflies and hummingbirds feet from the upstairs balcony while enjoying wonderful Costa Rican coffee. If we were up early, we were able to catch a glimpse of the Toucan that spent his mornings in a tree down the hill.
Dominical and the surrounding area were a pleasure to explore. There are days of great hikes at Hacienda Baru, beautiful beaches in both directions up and down the coast (make sure to check out the beaches in Matapalo and Ventanas!), and great restaurants with friendly staff abound.
The internet at the house is slow, but workable - exactly as the hosts described. Myself and my wife were able to successfully use Skype and Google Voice for VOIP calls while at the house. Here's a speedtest:
Can't wait to come back!
The Villa Mountain Serenity may be the most beautiful place on earth. Our family spent two months in this luxury 3BR mountain perch with incredible views of the jungle valley. We traveled around Costa Rica during our stay, but the location of this villa on the southern coast was our overall favorite spot... remote enough to enjoy the peace of seclusion of nearby beaches (our favorites were Ventanas, Hermosa, etc), but close enough to enjoy an abundance of restaurants and American-friendly activities.
The villa is located in a small gated community called "Cascada Azul" which was mostly empty lots, providing the quiet retreat were were looking for. We appreciated the detailed directions from the airport to villa, which we would have been lost without... make sure to follow them closely. And don't be afraid of the intimidating drive up the mountain, we grew to love it! There is a huge private waterfall on the property within walking distance of the villa, and many more less than a 15 minute drive away. Every week we swam in a new waterfall! Our favorite waterfall spots were the Dominicalito tarzan rope (the closest), Uvita (which had delicious fish tacos), and one hidden in Ojochal (if you're looking for more of an adventure)
In the mornings, our favorite thing to do was enjoy a local fruit smoothie next to the villa's infinity pool, which honestly was the best part of the whole trip. The property around the home was well maintained, with a steep backyard trail winding through a variety of beautiful tropical plants. The home was completely stocked with towels, pots/pans, games, guide books, and spices... really all the necessities for everyday life. The staff was very attentive, including pool maintenance every few days and a cleaning crew every two weeks. Shari was super communicative and accommodating, answering all of our questions.
The Dominical area was perfect for us! We'd recommend the "Bookstore by the Seashore" that rents books and movies, so you don't have to pack them. Fruit smoothies are offered at lots of locations around town, which we loved. San Clemente was a fun stop for ping pong and the fastest internet speeds were at Arena Y Sol.
We would recommend Villa Mountain Serenity to anyone looking for a comfortable and quiet mountain paradise with easy access to the ocean and jungle! We loved our stay!
This house was amazing! The road to get up the hill really wasn't that bad, as some roads can be pretty rough. As long as you have a 4x4, which you should if you're driving around Costa Rica! The house was big enough for the 5 of us to sleep comfortably. We all really enjoyed the layout and the open kitchen allowed us to make dinner and still participate in fun conversations about all the exciting things we did that day. The pool is GORGEOUS and the perfect place to watch the sunset over the Pacific and rolling hills. You can grill in the outdoor kitchen and eat outside, which I highly suggest! Pretty much the perfect house for our trip! There were plenty of towels, a washer and dryer in case you needed to do laundry, a cooler if you wanted to bring it to the beach, etc. Everything you could ask for was there!
To describe Shari's place accurately would take far more words of praise than can possbily fit here. Suffice it to say our week was all that we had hoped for: a wonderful, restful stay in a fabulous house in an extraordinarily beautiful part of the sorld. "Villa Mountain Serenity" is most aptly named. Every moment was precious: waking to watch the mist rise slowly from the mountain valleys, listening to the calls of toucans, parrots, and tanagers in the yard; watching hummingbirds dart about the golden trumpet flowers; enjoying the gardens, the heliconia flowers, the hibiscus; watchinng from the terrace the amazing sunsets over the pacific...what else can we add? That we actually saw a long-tailed coati ambling about the Cascada Azul property? That we photographed a snowy Costa Rican white hawk in the forest near the house? That our children spent hours in the infinity pool gazing at the mountains? That the house is fully equipped with everything one could possibly need on a "get away from it all" vacation? That we were only 15 minutes from world-class beaches? Thanks to Shari and her family, this was simply one of our best family vacations ever. We are sure it will be one of yours as well if you are wise enough to visit Villa Mountain Serenity.
We, 5 adults, spent a week at Villa Moutain Serenity.
When we got there, everything was clean and prepared for our arrival. The house is just as it looks on the pictures. Beautiful pool with warm water surrounded by flowers, a cascade and a fire, comfortable hammock and a BBQ ! The yard really stands out.
About the house, it had everything we needed. Enough towels, glasses, chairs, etc. It's really like a paradise hidden in the moutain. The house is also well situated, near Playa Hermosa (Uvita), Hacienda Baru, Dominical and about 1h30 from Manuel Antonio.
We would recommend this place to anybody and repeat the experience at anytime.
