Above the resort town of Uvita, immersed in nature, tranquility and privacy sits a hidden jewel. This unusual Villa is here for any couple or individual who wishes to rejuvenate while enjoying the area's almost unlimited pleasure and adventure. Tucked away in a tropical paradise, this Moroccan/Indian style Villa has the feel of a small palace. This exclusive Villa is luxurious, extremely comfortable and designed with exquisite attention to detail. Designed by us (the owners Paula and Marty) our focus was to create a place of beauty that would feel palatial and yet be cradled in the mountains and jungle, where one could experience "living in art and natural beauty at the same time".
The Villa is all handcrafted and great care went into creating interior windows and veranda arches, all uniquely designed with beautiful moldings. The mahogany Queen bed was also custom designed and hand carved. The bedroom floors are beautiful Teak wood, soft underfoot. The 18ft vaulted ceiling is crowned by an unusual dome which can be softly lit and is a pleasure to gaze at while lying in bed. The bathroom is spacious and mostly stone and has an exotic ancient feel. While the bedroom and bathroom are comfortably screened in the veranda (living room and gourmet kitchen) are open air yet covered and protected from the rain. The villa has several multicolored stained glass Moroccan lamps and candles enhancing the already serene and romantic ambiance. The veranda flooring is imported porcelain tile, the kitchen has hand painted wall tiles and counters of Costa Rican quartz stone. Both overlook your personal 51ft saltwater pool which is covered with see through fabric so that you are always protected from the harsh sun's rays but can see sky and trees clearly. The pool is tiled with Italian imported glass tiles and is both beautiful to look at and delightful to enjoy. It can be lit for an evening swim under the stars. The water is non chemical (saltwater) and one does not feel the salt. It just feels clean, fresh and gentle.
As you enter this private reserve you are stepping into a world of natural beauty where your awareness shifts as your senses are delighted and calmed by the extraordinary beauty in which you will be living.
This 60 acre private property has abundant wild life and hundreds of flowering plants and fruit and palm trees and overlooks the largest marine preserve in Central America, Cano Island, and the Whale's Tail reef (the third largest in the world). Included are hiking trails leading to stunning Pacific Ocean views and resting areas where you can stop to enjoy a glass of wine as you watch the sun set.
The Villa is nestled in the midst of a garden of tropical flowers, bamboos and sculptures and overlooks your personal 51 ft saltwater pool, the Uvita River Valley, and the Talamanca Mountains beyondn You awake each morning to the sounds of Howler Monkeys and numerous varieties of tropical birds (yet comfortably screened in) and relax in the evenings to the surf's far off gentle rhythms.

The Uvita area is one of the most biodiverse in the world. The Uvita beach is where the Whales come to give birth in September. It is spectacular to see.
All times of year we have many amazing beaches to swim, snorkel, fish, kayak , surf and relax.
We have so many delicious restaurants as well.
The people here are a beautiful mixture of Ticos (local Costa Rican) and estrangers. We all love living here and our community if happy and loving.
There are buses going north and south all day as well as several taxis.
Other Things to Note
We have a wonderful market every Saturday morning where you can shop for everything from organic vegetables, gluten free (or not!) home made breads, jewelry, hand crafts, delicious home made foods and condiments.
It is a great time to get out and socialize as well
No smoking inside the house please.
You want to stay here, trust me. The house, location, and landscaping are all amazing. My wife and I stayed here for five nights as part of our honeymoon and we couldn’t have chosen a better place. Paula and Marty are very kind souls who do a great job of making you feel welcome and taken care of without being intrusive. Really, everything about the house is very well thought out – the outdoor living room and kitchen were perfect for relaxing and cooking meals. The bedroom feels grand and palatial, the bed is very comfortable, and the bathroom is really nice. Overall, the craftsmanship is superb. Then on top of all of that, there is the saltwater pool and you have walking access to a spectacular hilltop view of Marina Ballena as well as walking access to a pristine river with multiple waterfalls (we hiked to and swam in three different falls while there).
A few considerations – the road is steep and rugged, a 4x4 is necessary. However, once you’re in Costa Rica for just a little while, you realize that ALL of the roads off the main highways are steep and rugged. My wife and I actually really enjoyed the ride to and from the house, it felt adventurous. I’ll also mention that the cicadas were surprisingly loud at dawn and dusk – but this was the case all along the coastal rainforest (particularly around full moons we were told) and you get used to it quickly (Costa Rica, in general, is a noisy place because of all the wonderful wildlife – insects, frogs, monkeys, birds – you’ll hear all of them every day). Lastly, the WiFi is sometimes slow, but again, this is common everywhere – and besides, why would you want to spend your time on the internet when there are so many amazing things to explore in the Uvita area.
My wife and I would not hesitate to return to this place again in the future. It really was amazing.
The hosts met us in town and led us to their lovely rental. We found everything as described in their listing. A 4WD vehicle is a MUST and we would recommend getting the premium insurance at time of rental - we had someone rear end us and other than the fact that it took 3 hours out of our day waiting for the police and insurance reports there was no other issue with the accident. Paula and Marty are wonderful to visit with and their property is GORGEOUS! Hiking it we saw many different butterflies, flowers, toucans, parrots, a capuchin monkey, waterfalls and fabulous views of course. The town of Uvita had plenty to offer for our 8 day stay. The Information Center is an excellent resource. We had perfect weather for our stay and no bugs! The saltwater pool was a refreshing luxury. We highly recommend the Hidden Villa. The open living room and kitchen added to our relaxation and enjoyment of the scenery. Costa Rica is now our favorite destination - friendly people, delicious fresh food and beautiful natural surroundings.
Paula and Marty were not in town at the time so we were met by the caretakers and they were wonderful. Landing in a country you have never been to can be a little challenging and they made us feel very comfortable. The space is just as depicted, Balinese style with jungle all around, charming little welcoming touches and that fabulous pool. The road to the Villa is rough and we would definitely suggest a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get back and forth. We enjoyed our stay and met some wonderful people in Uvita that are now friends. If you are looking for a getaway that is very quiet and peaceful...this is the place.
In all our travels over many, many years, we have never had as cordial, informative and straight-out pleasant an ongoing communication as we have had with Paula. No one has matched her sincere efforts in guaranteeing our every comfort and request. I wish she were a neighbor here in the states as we would have her to the house for dinner on a weekly basis!
As to Hidden Valley; when it comes to accommodations, there seems to be two kinds of thinking; there are those that say, "the room is not all that important - it's just a place to sleep," and then there are people such as myself, where the accommodation is an integral, even essential part of the overall travel experience. That is Hidden Valley.
Hidden Valley is not simply a luxury, affordable and gorgeous property - it is a destination unto itself. Unique beyond description, this is a "Xanadu!" An outdoor living room where we were facing an incredible view of the rain-forest, a bedroom that had every detail covered, from cut flowers to sleeping masks, a bathroom with all the anticipated comforts but with a shower that was fabulous - and of course a private pool that sits amongst some of the most beautiful jungle we have ever seen. Hidden Valley, by far, is without question the most unique and exquisite accommodations we have ever rented - or should I say "experienced." So close to town, restaurants, friendly people and of course incredibly beaches - those are places to go and enjoy, but but Paula's Hidden Valley, now THAT is a destination!
I spent almost 3 weeks at Hidden Villa and I only have 2 regrets: The first is that I wasn't able to stay longer. The second is that Marty and Paula had to leave for the States fairly early on in my stay so I didn't get the opportunity to get to know them better. I spent a good couple of hours talking in person with Marty and he's a fascinating, kind, open, interesting, fun, brilliant, intelligent, ( could go on and on but you probably get the picture) person.
If you're looking for peace, serenity, to be enveloped by nature, then this is absolutely the place for you. You'll notice from the pictures that the bedroom and bathroom are enclosed but the living area and kitchen are open. when I first considered booking here I was a bit concerned as it seemed 'too open'. The best way that I can describe it having experienced it, is that it's like having a living room and kitchen with huge windows except there's no glass - or walls :) It was perfect. It does mean that you have to be ok with a few bugs with inquiring minds but, for me, that's part of connecting with Costa Rica and the world around you.
It's obvious from the detail that has been put into every aspect of Hidden Villa - the architecture, landscaping, sculptures, decorating, etc. - that building it was a labor of love.
Getting to and from the villa from Uvita is an experience in itself. Sitting near the top of a mountain, you have to drive across a small stream and then up a pretty rough road. You need a 4x4. I had a little Suzuki Jimmy and it was perfectly fine. To me, this added to the fun of staying here as i was looking for something remote but not too far from civilization.
There's no doubt in my mind that I will be back.
Paula and Marty: Thank you for your kind hospitality and I wish you all the best.
The lovely pictures and beautiful discription of this villa do not do it justice. This tiny, out of the way villa is a paradise! Situated in the very pleasent and sleepy village of Uvita, Costa Rica, this home is the perfect getaway for anyone needing time away from the crazy busy day to day life that we all seem to have. This is a very safe, very clean home that is super private and is beautiful beyond imagination. My husband and I spent our honeymoon here and we are so thankful we did. The owners Paula and Marty are very attentive while having the upmost respect for your privacy. They live very nearby but you would never know they are there. There is a radio you can you use to call them if need or emergency arises. The pool is salt water and is the most decadent thing you will ever experience. The cover over the pool keeps it very clean and there is a gentleman that comes every morning very early to clean and care for it. He is very quiet and unless you wake up early you will never know he was there. The ktchen is small but more then adaquate for 1-2 people. Beautiful gardens, beautiful home, lovely owners. You will be cheating yourself if you don't stay here.
Of note, there is a fairly steep and rocky road to get to the villa. You will need to rent a 4WD vehicle to get up there. It is a bit of an adventure but not terrible. We easily got up the road in our 4WD rental car and had no problems.
Uvita is a lovely village on the South Pacific side of the country. We met very nice people and had the best time there. It is set aside from the major tourist areas which was a huge plus for us. The area is close to some of the most beautiful mangroves in the world. Scuba diving and Isla Cano is beyond wonderful and the folks at Mad About Diving in Uvita are the best. The area is overflowing with amazing food in restaurants for every budget. Citrus is an excellent resturant for the more high end and for a cheap but out of this world dinner, try the Flutterby hostel near the beach.
Zip lines, beautiful beaches, kyaking, surfing....all those things are close by and easily set up by Paula's friend down at the Uvita Info center. Paula and Marty are also have a wealth of information on the area and are eager to share all of the best kept secrets.
Nearby waterfalls are warm and inviting in this tropical paradise, and short hike from the villa takes you to an overlook that must be seen to be believed. You will not regret a single moment here. We stayed 2 weeks and would have stayed another 2 in a heartbeat. Thank you Paula and Marty! It was the best!
We feel so lucky to have found our way to the hidden villa and can't recommend it enough. It's remarkable charm and comfort, along with our gracious hosts Paula and Marty, made our trip to Costa Rica very special indeed.
Private, unique, tasteful, and just very well considered overall, the villa itself offered lodging with modern amenities right in the heart of the jungle. Surrounded by nature and an incredible view, we were just a short and exciting (definitely get a 4X4) drive into Uvita and the relatively remote coast of southern pacific Costa Rica. We did our best to take advantage of what the region had to offer with nature tours and snorkeling, but you really don't need to travel far when the villa offers great viewing of birds and lizards all around, an awesome waterfall and swimming hole nearby, and of course the fantastic saltwater pool!
Paula and Marty are just a walkie talkie call away with a wealth of local knowledge and advice to share and are simply a pleasure to talk and visit with. Definitely visit Sonia at the Uvita Information Center in town; she can help book tours or tell you how to find local attractions, etc. If you can make it out to Cano island or down to the mangroves near Sierpe, you won't regret it. We also highly recommend ordering the whole fish at Villa Leonor, a short drive south of Uvita, and don't miss the small ceviche stand just past Villa Leonor! Incredible.
Can't really imagine a more idyllic place to have a vacation and we really only wish we could have stayed longer.
Thank you Paula and Marty!
Fourteen years ago my husband and I took our first trip together to Costa Rica and fell deeply in love with the country. Making our way to the small coastal Tico village of Uvita, where the mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, we found the beauty of the country rivaled only by the beauty of the Tico people. We felt that we had "come home" to a place where the inter connectedness of true community, and the ease and openness that radiates from people (a true mixture of Tico and extranjeros) is present in every interaction.
Now, living in Costa Rica we have found our that our lives are greatly enriched by this beautiful environment. About 4 years ago we designed and built Villa Esondida (Hidden Villa) and it was a true labor of love. It brings us great pleasure to invite guests to enter this magical world and to participate in ensuring that their vacation is memorable and exceeds their expectations.
