Escape to this private mountain cottage at Homestead Retreat, a one-of-a-kind eco-friendly nature preserve in Clyde, NC, near Asheville, Waynesville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Perfect for couples or families, this peaceful retreat features 3 bedrooms with 1 king bed and 4 XL twin beds, scenic hiking trails, mountain streams, organic gardens, a treehouse with a hammock, fire pit, compost toilet, hot outdoor showers, and a camp-style kitchen for a true nature escape.
The space
Escape to our Earth-friendly guest cottage at Homestead Retreat, a private nature preserve and organic farm nestled in the mountains of Clyde, North Carolina. Just 40 minutes from Asheville, Cherokee, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this peaceful retreat offers the perfect blend of comfort, nature, and adventure. Surrounded by ancient forests, mountain streams, waterfalls, scenic meadows, organic gardens, seasonal blueberry picking, and a spring-fed pond filled with colorful koi, you'll experience the beauty of Western North Carolina at its finest.
Upon arrival, you'll park beside our art studio and follow the path on the right to your private guest cottage, located above the studio. Inside, you'll find a thoughtfully designed space with a private entrance, nearby parking, and accommodations for one family or group at a time (maximum of 4 adults). The cottage features three bedrooms, including a luxurious King Tempur-Pedic bed in the primary bedroom and two additional bedrooms, each furnished with two extra-long Twin Tempur-Pedic beds. The bathroom includes a state-of-the-art compost toilet, supporting our commitment to sustainable living.
Step outside and enjoy the property's unique amenities. Relax in the adjacent treehouse, complete with a hammock and gathering space that's perfect for reading, playing games, or simply taking in the peaceful surroundings. If you're feeling adventurous, you're welcome to sleep in the treehouse—just bring your own sleeping bags and ground pads.
Just outside the cottage is our outdoor shower house, featuring two private shower stalls with built-in benches and changing areas. Fresh mountain spring water, filtered for quality, provides abundant on-demand hot water to both the showers and the kitchen sink. The beautifully restored 100-year-old smokehouse serves as a rustic camp kitchen, equipped with a propane stove and basic cooking essentials. Inside the cottage, you'll also have a small refrigerator, coffee maker, and safe drinking water. A spacious deck, picnic table, and fire pit invite you to enjoy meals, stargazing, and evenings around the fire.
Seasonal Note
Mountain weather can be cool during April, May, September, and October. The cottage does not have a permanent heating system, staying true to its nature-focused design. We provide plenty of extra blankets for every bed, and portable heaters are available during unusually cold or near-freezing weather.
Guided Nature Experiences
Enhance your stay with a guided adventure led by host Ted "Hawk" Hurst, a Master Naturalist and storyteller. For $45 per hour, Hawk offers unforgettable hikes through the preserve, sharing his knowledge of edible and medicinal plants, wildlife behavior, tracking, and ancient living skills. Guests are also welcome to explore the organic gardens, orchards, chickens, and honeybee hives. We recommend arranging guided experiences before or shortly after your arrival.

Guest access
During your stay, you'll have exclusive access to the private guest cottage, outdoor shower house, treehouse, and historic smokehouse camp kitchen, allowing you to fully enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Homestead Retreat.
Parking: One parking space is available directly in front of the guest cottage. If you're traveling with additional vehicles, extra guest parking is located approximately 50 yards up the road.
Getting to the Cottage: The private entrance is located around the back of the art studio, closest to the outdoor shower house, smokehouse kitchen, and treehouse.
Guests are welcome to explore the property's scenic hiking trails, mountain streams, forests, gardens, and open spaces throughout the nature preserve. We encourage you to unplug, reconnect with nature, and enjoy everything the land has to offer.
The Barn and Main House are private and not included with your reservation. However, if you're interested in learning more about the property, simply ask—we're always happy to provide a tour when available.
To help preserve the peaceful atmosphere for everyone, please respect our neighbors' homes, driveways, and private property during your visit.
Other things to note
If you plan to prepare meals during your stay, you'll have access to our rustic outdoor camp kitchen, affectionately known as The Smokehouse. This charming, restored historic building is equipped with a single-burner propane stove, tea kettle, cast-iron skillets, pots, basic cooking utensils, and dinnerwareeverything you need to prepare simple meals while enjoying the peaceful mountain setting.
A nearby sink, located beside the Smokehouse and outdoor shower house, provides filtered mountain spring water for washing dishes and cleanup. We kindly ask that guests wash and put away all cookware and dishes after each use to help keep the space clean and ready for everyone to enjoy.
Inside the cottage, you'll also find a small refrigerator, coffee maker, and a large dispenser of safe drinking water for your convenience.

Located in Clyde North Carolina in the mountains you can access via Interstate 26 and you will take exit US-74 W to Merge onto I-40 W. This is a scenic, rural location and 40 mins north of Asheville, NC. Our neighbors are respectful and polite. There are six well-maintained homes past our property.

Ayal and Hawk (Ted) Hurst are the owners and directors of Homestead Retreat. Ayal is a Shamanic practitioner, holistic healer, mixed-media artist. Hawk is master craftsman (Native American-style flutes), folk musician, and storyteller. They both enjoy gardening and tending the land, as well as sharing with others their love of the Earth and its many wonders. Internships at Homestead Retreat are available through the WWOOF program.
