Rosemary Gordon, founder of Asociación Humanitaria "San Fransisco De Asis" was born in Peru to a South African father and Peruvian mother. At the age of 12 years Rose and her family moved to South Africa where she lived and later raised her family before moving back to Peru in 1996. Since this time a small dedicated group of people with the invaluable assistance of contacts in both South Africa and Canada have worked very hard to provide services and programs to animals & their owners in Colan, Piura and surrounding villages. The villages of the surrounding areas suffer from extreme poverty and animals are in great need of care. In the past, closest access to veterinarian services had been a 60km trek via bus to the town of Piura. A trip made difficult not only by cost factors but also due to the fact that many forms of public transport are either unwilling to have animals on board or if permitted to travel at all, are relegated to the trunk of the vehicle. Now thanks to the invaluable services of our veterinarians and volunteers, the Asociation provides mobile Veterinarian Services/Clinics to those small rural towns and villages who previously have gone without. The team moves into a community, sets up shop in an available area and gets down to work with spay/neuter, de-worming, mange treatments and various other emergency services. In addition to this another team member rounds up children in the village and conducts impromptu educational awareness classes on animal wellbeing and environment using educational information provided by WSPA ( World Society for the Protection of Animals) and HSI (Humane Society International). In addition to the above, yearly Equine Workshops/Clinics are provided in conjunction with the assistance of Humane Society International. As working equines make up a large part of rural Peruvian life, their services are in high demand. Working with the people through animal care has led to many other opportunities. One of which has been finding wonderful friends in Nova Scotia, Canada who have been instrumental in forming a Colan branch of the “Family to Family Program” between families in Nova Scotia, and needy families in Colan, Piura, Peru.
