A serene retreat that any writer or artist or meditator or honeymooning couple would love, my home is perched in the trees, yet is minutes away from town.
A hillside view of the Cascade Valley is revealed through sliding glass doors, opening one wall of the living room (upstairs) and of the master bedroom (downstairs) onto a view of the green outdoors, a valley with dozens of varieties of trees, a distant mountainside and sky. The glass doors -- both upstairs and downstairs -- open to redwood decks which have glass sides, so that the gorgeous view is not obscured. You will see deer resting and squirrels running and birds soaring close by. A creek at the bottom of the hill rages in winter and is dry in summer.
My home is a cozy two bedroom, one bathroom on two stories. Upstairs are the living room, dining room and brand new kitchen. Downstairs are two bedrooms and the bathroom. Hardwood, amber-colored floors throughout reflect the ample natural light. All new electricity provides lights in the master bedroom operable from the door or from the brand new all natural bed -- an organic, all-latex mattress on a massive, designer log bed. This is the most comfortable bed you'll ever sleep in! You can wake up to the green view if you want or close the thick drapes to keep it dark enough to sleep in. The second bedroom (the red room) can sleep one person (adult or child). It's a cozy room without a view -- decorated to encourage whimsy and imagination -- remarkably conducive either to creative work or conversation.
You can expect to have the whole sparkling-clean house to yourself, with all the amenities of home provided. I will leave your breakfast, as well as ample linens and towels, hair dryer and shampoo, cappuccino maker and coffee or tea. You will have access to the (also brand new) washing machine and dryer. I have wi-fi for your computer and all the premium channels on cable TV. (HBO, IFC, Turner Classic, Sundance, Comedy). Bring your IPod because there's a dock with speakers in the bedroom.
I rent my home when I go on vacation or out of town. Inquire if you are wondering if your dates are available, as I can sometimes (not always) arrange to be away.
The house is a half mile from downtown Fairfax -- walking distance-- or a two minute drive. The car deck (also recently upgraded) holds parking for two cars. In downtown Fairfax, you'll find three live music venues, a movie theater, and loads of good restaurants. Try the new Hummingbird Cafe for organic New Orleans style food or Avatar's Punjabi Burritos for a cuisine that combines Indian, Mexican and Jamaican (and it's not just burritos). The FairFix Cafe is a funky mediterranean style cafe where locals hang out, and the Fatoush salad is the best in the Bay area. There's also Thai food, Mexican, Chinese, and several options for espresso, including the drive-through Java Hut. The oldest health food store in Marin (The Good Earth) is now also the biggest and has a restaurant.
It's a ten minute drive to three of the five lakes owned by the Marin Municipal Water District. Lake Lagunitas has a flat 1.7 mile walking or biking loop. Bon Tempe Lake is 3.7 miles around, and Alpine Lake is about 10 miles around. Minutes away is total wilderness, good for hiking, biking and fishing. Fairfax is where the mountain bike was invented!
Fairfax is known for its unusual slant on life, a quirky town where music is on the streets when it's warm, and the local Farmers' Market is a Wednesday night kid-friendly party from May to October 4 pm to 8 pm. Known as the gateway to West Marin, Fairfax is 30 minutes to Point Reyes and 40 minutes to San Francisco. It's possible to take the bus to Larkspur Ferry into the city or all the way into the city.
Security deposit of $300 required; returned if no damage.
Cleaning fee: $100 in addition.
Absolutely no smoking anywhere on the property, inside or outside.
I checked off "yes" that there are pets on premises in case you have allergies because I have a dog, who will not be left behind! Know that the house will be thoroughly, professionally cleaned.
Please be sure to give me enough information about you so that I feel comfortable with you staying in my home. Your full name and a photograph that shows your face clearly are both very helpful.

Sandy's little house was perfect for a couple. Great views, and great location. She is also an excellent host, with plenty of recommendations and support. We loved the nearby trails, and of course, the proximity to Good Earth, probably the best food store in the US!
We stayed for more than two weeks, and would love to stay again next time we are in the area!
Sandy was a wonderful host. She thoughtfully prepared a packet of information for us about the area. Her restaurant recommendations were very helpful. She was genuinely interested in our vacation plans and open to communicating with us before and during the visit. Her home is lovely and the location could not have been more ideal for us. We would definitely rent from Sandy again!
Sandy's home is home a way from home. Situated outside San Francisco but close enaugh if you wish going into the city.
Doing yoga in front of the big sliding doors in the morning facing the mountains was so beautiful. Sitting on the balcony with a good glass of wine we just picked from a closed by winery was very peaceful and relaxing we even got to see a deer walking by from there. Sandy is a wonderful host. She shared all the information necessary to enjoy the area and made sure we had everything we needed and more.
We found Sandy responsive to our concerns prior to going to her place. The location is close to many walking and hiking paths and near the town.the location was perfect for us-close to everything we love - lakes, hiking trails, mountains, and towns. She kindly left us information on the area and was accessible by phone with several questions we had during our stay.
Her place is comfortable and cozy. The view from her deck is beautiful; the master bedroom is comfortable, lots of space and a grand bed. The kitchen is well appointed.Appliances are all new and state of the art. But best of all, the home is filled with art-including the kitchen floor. It was peaceful, charming; a wonderful retreat after hiking all day. We strongly recommend it and plan to return.
The reservation was canceled 47 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Sandy was there to greet me warmly and show me around her beautiful home. It's dreamy: nestled into the side of the hill, with— what I found to be — a breathtaking view of trees and valley. The location is ideal — easy to get anywhere in the Bay Area: San Francisco, hiking in the redwoods, the coast and Sonoma/Napa — and still peaceful. It was clean, cozy and unique. Sandy left a mini-library of possible things to do, with some even thoughtfully tailored to things I'd mentioned in advance. Colorful artwork, a comfortable bed, beautiful light streaming in from the wall of windows, and an espresso machine make the space that much harder to leave. I'd highly recommend staying at Sandy's.
The experience at Sandy's place has been wonderful!
We felt very welcomed with the snack food and beverages in the kitchen, the fresh flowers throughout the house, and the detailed notes/ emails re: restaurants and places to visit.
We were glad to meet Sandy and were given a tour of the house, which was nestled in the trees and had a panoramic view of Fairlax hills, an incredibly beautiful and diverse piece of paradise!
We especially loved being on the upstairs deck at night gazing at the stars and we hated leaving...
The home is clean, comfortable and artfully colorful.
Thank you Sandy for being such a caring and thoughtful host!
Comfortable, peaceful, beautiful view, great location close enough to walk to town, but far enough to feel in the country. Sandy is very nice, responsive and takes care of the details.
We spent 3 weeks in Sandy's home.. I found it a bit smaller than the pictures show on the web but perfectly adequate for a couple.
I particularly liked the scrumptious bed and the beautiful vistas. I aporeciated the fact that Sandy let us to use her basic staple food which avoided us to buy salt oil herbs etc......
The kitchen is adequately outfitted although I daily swore at the kitchen cabinets without handles ( esthetics, said Sandy) . I am a gourmet cook so I missed sharp knives, rubber and wooden spoons as well as a non stick frying pan, although there are non stick lasagna dishes.
A few more normal sizes plates would also have been welcome. There were plenty of silverware.
The bathroom does need some refurbishing but Sandy said it was going to be her next project.
A few more mirrors around the house would have been welcome, ( I never did find the full length one inside a closet door.)
Californians are, as I am, environmentally conscious and I hope the water on our night stands in a plastic bottles coming from New Zealand was only justfied by a tremendous sale that day !
A few more restaurants recommendations on the welcome sheet would have been helpful.
There is wifi access but not all cell service work in the area . ( T mobile does not , Verizon and At&T do). No printer.
The house phone is available.
Cute little town center is within walking distance with a good movie theater. Gorgious hikes around lakes.
To summarize, I felt being in the house of a friend with its up and down and would not hesitate to recommend it or to go back to it. Thank you Sandy !
We loved being in Sandy's home. The deck has a wonderful view of the canyon, the kitchen has everything you need - we used the espresso maker a lot - and the bedroom is beautiful. The town of Fairfax is a short distance away. We enjoyed music at The Sleeping Lady.
