About This Listing
We'd love to share our house at the beach with you!
Our family has owned and enjoyed this hillside cottage for 35 years. We have always loved being 'on the hill' because of the lovely feel of the neighborhood and the lush profusion of plants and trees.
The location has the best of both worlds, the mountain view on one side and the ocean view on the other. It's removed just enough from the hub bub of the downtown beach scene.
One block from the house is the path to the one general grocery store and the village's main drag. One more block and you are on the beach.
The layout of the house is nice for a group. The 2 bedrooms are on opposite ends, allowing for privacy.
There are several outdoor spots to retreat to: a large covered front porch with a dining table and chairs, a small back porch and a large backyard deck 50 feet from the house.
The kitchen, dining room and living room are open-plan with lovely high open beamed ceilings. One bedroom faces the street and the other one the ocean.
The loft has a view of the mountains. Both kids and adults find the loft cozy.
Each bedroom has a Queen bed and the sleeping loft an extra-long twin.1 bath home sleeps 5 comfortably, no pull-out sofa beds!
Views of ocean and Mt. Tamalpais foothills from the spacious front porch, master bedroom and large backyard deck. 3 TV's, cable, DVD player, stereo and wi-fi.
Amenities include, washer/dryer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, BBQ. Off and on street parking.
The entire house, except the garage.
Our neighborhood, locally referred to as "The Hill" has a lovely, peaceful feel to it. Our neighbors are mostly local, full-time residents. The folks are very friendly, so feel free to say Hello! Walks around the neighborhood are particularly nice, revealing interesting homes, from 1920's bungalows to new modern architcture. And the hill is lush with flowers, trees and succulents to boot.
The famous Dipsea trailhead is right around the corner and the Matt Davis trail begins a block away. All the trails connect so you can pick your distance.

The shell cottage was spacious, neat, and very comfortable. The were very comfortable and the furnishings matted well with the cottage like feel. The kitchen was stocked adequately and we were able to cook a couple meals and use the grill with no issues.
The weather did not cooperate but that's coastal living in a seashell. Mostly too cold to enjoy the beach down the hill but we did get to try out the local hiking trail. Being near the top of the hill makes it quiet and secluded with a view of the beach. The town itself is pretty small with limited amenities ...but we were familiar with it so we came prepared.
Overall a great stay as we were really looking for a peaceful comfortable place to getaway for a weekend... and the Shell cottage worked out well for us.
Penny's home is perfect! Absolutely wonderful. The cottage is tastefully decorated, and each room is extremely comfortable. The kitchen was great and all of the beds were extremely comfortable. The cottage is a short walk from the beach and the local grocery store. My family was also very pleased with the home.
The view of the beach was fantastic. The yard is open and spacious. All in all, we had a great time at the cottage.
Penny's cottage is just a delight to visit and landscape is breathtaking. Everything was tidy and beds & bedding very comfy for a good night's sleep, (especially appreciated as we hiked our feet off through the spectacular coastal hills & woods immediately adjacent to this lovely spot). The houses are densely clustered up above the beach on the hillside here, 10 minute walk +/-, but all is thoughtfully landscaped to allow an optimal sense of privacy onsite and we found it very quiet with almost no traffic passing by the house, even on a sunny April weekend w/ lots of beachgoers down in the town below.
The kitchen is well enough equipped that we were able to cook &host a dinner/birthday party for 8 people here very comfortably, (my husband astonished to find a sharp knife in a rental!)
We never met Penny in person, but her notes were both prompt and welcoming. You wont be disappointed but will be looking to come again! Perfect fit for either 2 couples or for a family of 4-5. Thank you Penny for the lovely visit!
Thank you Penny for a lovely week at your home. Great view of the sea from the master bedroom. We spent many hours reading on the front porch gazing at the sea listening to the waves and smelling the sweet smells of flower. Very nice and quite community and easy access to hiking Mt Tam and the beach.
We will be back for sure.
Great house in a great location. We could walk down a small hill to the beach and the hiking trails were just around the corner. The house itself is clean, bright and airy. Everything you might need is available in the house and where you'd expect it. Would recommend to a friend.
Thank you Penny! - We had a great family vacation at your relaxing and cozy cottage. The beds were comfy and the well-stocked kitchen was great to make our breakfast and snacks each day. We really appreciated the fireplace, washer and dryer, dishwasher, the front and back decks, and the great views.
We loved how close it was to the beautiful beach and the amazing hiking trails of Mount Tamalpais right outside the door two blocks away. It was a quick drive to the beautiful Muir Woods and great breath-taking views to and from San Francisco. We would highly recommend this great vacation spot!
It is always an adventure going to new places, not knowing entirely what to expect. Our flight was delayed and it was already evening when our Son finally picked us up at SF airport. We did obviously notice crossing the mountains after the Golden Gate because of all the turns and bends in the road, but we did not see much as it was pitch dark. When we finally got to Stinson Beach it was easy to find Shell Cottage and we really liked the house, where we lit the fire and made our selves comfortable. The beds where made, so we had a good first night sleep.
The real surprise was the next morning when we woke up and realized what beautiful setting we found ourselves in. Having breakfast on the deck/porch with a view on the Ocean, and the sound of birds and rolling waves in the background, was the best possible start of our Thanksgiving week.
The house is tastefully decorated and very convenient, good beds, fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living room and magnificent decks. It takes less than 10 minutes walk to the beautiful beach with some nice places to have a lunch or dinner. Less than 5 minutes from the house an amazing footpath takes you up the mountain with more stunning views on the small bay and the ocean.
We really liked both the location and the house. We made a few trips along the coast and to Sonoma where we visited one of the wineries. The remainder of the week we stayed around the house, did some reading, made some beach walks and had a great a time.
About the Host, Penny
I am a native Californian and a 4th generation San Franciscan. I've owned the house for 35 years and have lived in it off and on. We've always cherished 'the beach house' in our family. The neighborhood on the hill has really not changed much over the years. My favorite activities at Stinson include daily walks around the neighborhood with friends, volunteering at the library, an aerobics class for seniors and, of course, endless walks on the beach.
I live in Marin County now. Spend time with my son and my sweetheart. We go to the farmers' market, cook, shop at Ikea. Going over to San Francisco to the museums is top on our list. I travel to see my daughter who lives in Santa Fe with my two grand-pugs once or twice a year. I stay busy with water aerobics, volunteering at a thrift shop and sewing with my girlfriends.
