This old country house was built in 1915 and has been renovated and remodeled through the years. Our remodel includes this efficiency apartment for your Airbnb get-away.
Private Bedroom with double bed, bath & shower, living space & kitchenette.
Looking back from the trail going to the forest don't let the dilapidated barn throw you off- we have lots of work left to do on the place, but the house is ready for occupancy!
This 21 acre property is located just 5 miles from the center of Asheville and only 2 miles from Haywood Rd. in West Asheville. We're 1 mile outside the city limit.
Our unpretentious neighborhood and rural feeling gives you the best of both worlds- quiet nights and lots to do and see both in Asheville and in the surrounding mountain and river ecosystems.
The house was homeowner-built before there were inspectors for such endeavors. However, it is safe, comfortable and clean.
The best part is that it is SPRING water supplying all our H2O needs! The efficiency apartment is our own home-owner addition, and includes a bathroom with a shower, and a kitchen. The private bedroom has a lockable door, double bed and a fresh coat of paint.
I have been a host for Airbnb for over four years, and in this time frame I've booked more than 390 bookings and have earned more than 150 5- star reviews.
The common room with the living/dining/kitchen/bathroom areas are semi-private as there could be times when there are guests tent camping, or times during the day when we need to walk through from the back door to our side of the house. At night we close the doors, pull the blinds and make it a private space for you. However, your bedroom is completely private and lockable at all times.
As our guest you will enjoy access to explore the 21 acres as you desire, have a fire in the fire circle at night (you might have to gather wood on the property for this), sit down by the bubbling brook and read a book or take a nap. The possibilities depend on your creative mind. We have no TV but do have wifi available to you.
Interaction with Guests
We love to meet our guests. As long time (4 years) hosts of airbnb guests, we've experienced all sorts of folks and are excited to be offering this service once again in our new (old) home in NC. Guests can have total privacy with separate entrance and a lockable bedroom door, and interact with us as much (within reason!) or as little as they choose.
We still have airbnb spaces in Savannah GA- check out the listing for Digs on Duffy, and Never Blue if you'd like.
This is as rural as it gets within 5 miles of downtown. The closer you get to our place, the more spread out the houses get. It's quiet day and night, with very light traffic on the road leading in. Beautiful mountain vistas can be seen along the way if you take certain routes we can tell you about.
City bus stop is one mile away, downhill most of the way there! Once in town- you'll want to be on foot with easy walking and lots to see along the way between points of interest.
Leaving the driveway can be a bit daunting as it seems to be a blind drive. I've found that rolling down the windows and listening is the best indicator of oncoming traffic. That method has worked every time, and it's not a very busy road either.
Other Things to Note
We are a couple of permaculture designers, implementing sustainable principles of this design system as we settle into living on this land.
Our remodeled apartment has been done with mostly recycled, salvaged and some limited quantity of new materials. The finish work is done with non-toxic milk paints and some no-VOC latex, recycled grocery bag wall paper, with tung oil and carnuba wax for the wood work.
Eventually we plan to have tree houses and alternative structures built with indigenous materials, workshops and retreat events...stay tuned!
Check in after 3:00, check out by 11:00 (flexible depending on circumstances)
Please respect the privacy and comfort of others under the same roof (in effect, it is a duplex of sorts).
Quiet hours are from 9pm-8am which is honored by both sides of the house.
If you have a pet (pet fee $20) please keep it off the furniture, kenneled if left in the house alone, and leashed when outside to protect the free-ranging farm birds.
We had a wonderful stay with Kelly and Tree in their asheville digs. the space was very romantic and just what we needed to start the new year off right! so thankful to have found the perfect space and to have met such great people!!!
thanks again you two! hope to check out your savannah property soon!!
Kelly and Tree were amazing hosts. They shared everything we needed to know about their beautiful & sustainable home, checked in throughout our stay, gave hiking recommendations, and left fresh eggs and all the fixings for breakfast! My partner and I were a little nervous to bring our dog, but they were welcoming and our little guy became fast friends with Kelly's three dogs.
Everything was very clean & comfortable and the location could not have been better! I hiked around the property (with nice views!) while my partner biked up to Mount Pisgah. It took us only a few minutes to get into town and the West Asheville scene was a pleasant surprise.
It was a little hard to picture what the shared-space situation would be before we arrived, I think because Cedar Springs is listed as "entire home/apt". While the entire guest suite is private (i.e. closed off by a locked door between it and the rest of the house), we had plenty of opportunities to interact with the hosts. We wouldn't have wanted our stay any other way, but this category may be misleading for those seeking a more "private" experience.
Thanks for everything, Kelly and Tree! We'd certainly love to return to your home if we get back to Asheville someday. Have a great Thanksgiving with your family :)
Having booked w/ hosts in this same price range, I can only say we had a curious and interesting stay. Kelly was very nice & helpful in recommending restaurants. There are 3 medium dogs and 4 cats that come and go regularly thru the living area. I would advise before booking that you ask Kelly to give a thorough description of the home-made composting “toilet” ie funnel, chamber pot, weather stripping and sawdust. If you are a couple where one of you likes to camp and the other does not, this would be an ideal compromise. We opted to forfeit our last night and book someplace else where “Woofers” would not wake us up at 2am coming in from camping to use the facilities. This is not a duplex in the traditional sense, but rather a private room only with use of shared spaces. The pictures of the bedroom are accurate and the bed was comfortable.
Ben, I strive to be as precise as reasonably possible in the communications with potential guests before they book the place. As I heard Alyson tell you several times as I showed you around the apartment, "I knew about that" -inferring that she had neglected to tell you about it. My first response to Alyson was as follows:
"Thank you for your interest in staying here. Just a couple things to let you know before you commit to booking it. Your bathroom is furnished with a composting toilet, and all the grey water (sink & shower) is plumbed to the garden. We've had no guest complaints about the facilities, and we ask that you use only biodegradable products- I furnish soap, shampoo & conditioner if you need. Just want you to know what to expect, no surprises or disappointments are the goals here! We're retrofitting this house for long term sustainability and self-sufficiency. Hope this works for you, and if so, we look forward to your stay!"
She was also told about the Wwoofers (willing workers on organic farms), and I describe the pets in my description on the site- which maybe only she read.
To sum it up, I'm sorry your cut your stay short out of a sense of being ill at ease in the space provided. I would suggest to you that you double check on all future reservations that you wife makes for the two of you. Perhaps it would have been more fair for her to have left the review rather than you, since she fully knew what to expect.
One thing that stood out to me from the get-go was Kelly's genuine and efficiently quick responsiveness to securing the space. Kelly's easy going, friendliness goes along way for any business transaction and this beats any hotel or many other "designer" rentals hands down simply by trustworthy hospitality and simple, heartfelt consciously arranged space. There's nothing better than getting such response right off the bat - especially to me being new to the town, new to Airbnb, traveling solo. The kitchen has enough basics to get any good meal going, the bed is SUPER comfortable, and...well, I could go on.
Cedar Springs is just as it's described...and better.
What is indescribable is the experience one gets at Cedar Springs Farm. My experience too home memories of asanctuary of the outdoors yet being quite convenient, hop-skip-jump to downtown; the very clean and homey refuge provided by community minded folks (fellow guests and hosts..and really sweet dogs, cats); and especially the feeling that something awesome is brewing here as a model for sustainable living.
This place is an inspiration and I can't wait to come back to experience Cedar Springs in another season.
Elizabeth, it was a pure pleasure to have you stay here! Thank you so much for your feedback and kind review!! We certainly will be cutting back on wattage use in time, the old fridge and hot plates are temporary! I appreciate your recognition of our striving to create a sustainable lifestyle and community minded vibe here. We've enjoyed your sister's wine you graciously gifted us with. Please come back often!!
Kelly touched base before I arrived to coordinate my arrival, and I really appreciated that. It made me feel expected and more welcome. The farm looks just like the pictures. The animals are adorable and it was definitely a fun experience. Kelly was very helpful by offering suggestions of local restaurants, hikes and even a yoga class to attend.
Kelly and Tree were fantastic hosts. Kelly gathered some fresh eggs and left them for us in our kitchenette. Such a great spot run by two really nice people. The area is gorgeous and close to everything. We'll be back!
Kelly and Tree were both amazing. They accepted my reservation very last minute which was really appreciated because the back-up plan was something dreadful like a roadside motel. It was the perfect 'mountain' getaway. I loved being on a farm with chickens and waking up to the mist and fog surrounding everything. Kelly gave me a great restaurant recommendation which was perfect. I needed a break as short as it was, I felt very rested. I would definitely go back and hopefully be able to spend longer there.
