About this listing
This is a nice sweet room at the back of the house, next to the large garden. It is one room in a home with 3 other rooms and a variety of longer and shorter term guests. The bath is shared with one other room. House is comfortable, casual, charming.
This is a great place to discover the bay area. Close to freeways (phone number hidden) minute walk to either Rockridge or Macarthur BART, and it's 15min to downtown San Francisco. Or if you are visiting family that doesn't have enough room, or you are wanting privacy. Nice, cute, art adorned room on the beautiful garden, with bath just by the room, off the kitchen. The garden is huge and lovely and in the right months there is plenty of harvest for all and flowers all around. Plenty of nooks to relax in.
The room is in the back of the house, so somewhat 'apart' from the rest of the house. Quite private, with a door to the garden just outside the room. The room has a new door! In response to a couple of comments here, a nice solid wood door was just put in. It also has a new fun floor!
Right down the street is the new hip strip -- the neighborhood of Temescal. It has numerous great restaurants (Pizzaiolo, Barlata, Bakesale Betty's, Mixing Bowl, Lanesplitter's, etc) and fun shopping. Bike rental also available.
Scent/Perfume free, please!!
The house is becoming the quintessential Airbnb house. Many interesting and fun travelers and scholars and people working local short term gigs have been coming to stay. Many people that come for a couple of weeks end up staying months. This room is the most 'short term'. There are 4 bedrooms in the house and 2 bathrooms, and usually 3 other people in the house. You will share the bathroom probably with one other person/room.
Be willing to separate garbage into: Landfill, Compost, Recycling.
This room can be rented out for a month or longer, so if you are interested in a longer term stay, inquire.
Light kitchen use a possibility, but you MUST be conscientious about cleaning up after yourself, all the way, and use of Living Room, Dining Room, Large garden. Washer and Dryer can be used with non-scent bio degradable detergent that you purchase. Strongly encouraged to use line to dry. Excessive dryer use will be charged.
Interaction with Guests
I am currently living nearby in Berkeley. I am available for tips and suggestions, and am around a bit working in the garden.
This neighborhood has become very very popular recently. New restaurants and fun shops opening all the time. Free outdoor cinema in summer. Lots of street festivals. Farmer's market at DMV on Sundays. It is a very lively neighborhood.
Very well located. Bus runs local and express to UC Berkeley, Downtown Berkeley and Downtown Oakland. 15 min walk to BART. 10 min walk to casual commute to SF during morning rush hour.
Please take a minute to look at these:
*Scent/Perfume free, please! This means no heavily perfumed soaps as well as perfume/aftershave/strong deodorant/laundry soap etc.
*This is an environmentally conscious house...You MUST be willing to learn the garbage/compost/recycling...it is not hard but it is more complicated that just tossing everything out...just ask...I don't like to go through other people' garbage separating it...
*No smoking..like all of California...100 feet from the house, not 'just in the garden'...sorry!
*No loud talking/cooking in common areas after 10pm.
*If you want to stay over Christmas, there is a week minimum.
*Laundry is available, but please use scent free detergent.
*Parking is street parking, but is not permitted, and fairly easy to find.
*Generally speaking, my dog won't get along with yours...
I absolutely loved the room, specially the Garden View. Because of the very dense garden you get pretty great temperatures all day. The Garden is also an amazing place to get work done during the weekends. The one think I appreciated the most about Rebecca was her flexibility and communication. I stayed for a few months and she allowed me to move stuff around and decorate the room to make me feel at "home." The roommates were the best, super helpful. Would definitely stay here again!
I had a great stay at Rebecca's place. The room is a little more spacious than as shown in the pictures because of recent renovations which included floor tiling. The room now consists of a bed, a nightstand, a work desk, a bookshelf (with half of a row full of books) and a dresser in the walk-in closet.
The room overlooks a beautiful garden with various fruits and flowers in stages of bloom. The house as a whole had several longer stay residents, which gave the stay a comfortable and home-y feeling.
The location is close to many nearby dining locations and is also about a 10-15 minute walk away from both the MacArthur and Rockridge BART stations.
Rebecca was a great host, who was always prompt with communication, and I'd highly recommend this place to travelers looking to stay in the area.
The room was fantastic, very fresh and peaceful. I enjoyed waking up and drinking my coffee in the sunny garden watching the hummingbirds. My experience with Rebecca and her place was perfect, she is a lovely host, helpful and easy to talk to. The house is in a great area for food and local amenities, the atmosphere there is very friendly, and the access to the train station is a short walk.
I will absolutely take the opportunity to stay here again in the future.
The advertised space (Garden Suite Temescal) I reserved had a problem with bedbugs that Rebecca was honest about. She said she had another "nice" room and my mistake was not asking for pictures. The room was cluttered with 3 tall bookcases full of her books, a 4-drawer metal filing cabinet, a drafting table with various cans of paint and bottles holding paint brushes, a small chest of drawers (with no empty drawers) and a large desk (again with no empty drawers). The single captain's bed was over the only heat vent in the room, had no headboard and the head of the bed was not up against a wall so reading comfortably in bed was not possible. The closet had some clothes on the shelves and smelled very musty. The bathroom which I shared with another long term tenant had no room in the medicine cabinet at all- it was full of Rebecca's belongings and she had moved in with her partner 6 months previously. I helped Rebecca move the drafting tale out of the room and we moved the bed so the head was up against a wall. Still a very cluttered space for $1295/month. The rest of the house had a lots of large dust bunnies and was really not very clean. Rebecca seemed to think that the renters should be doing the cleaning. I don't mind cleaning up after myself but I think the place needs to be clean to start with. She also got very upset when I cleaned out the fridge/freezer of all the things that didn't belong to the other tenant or myself-apparently I threw out some of her things. Why she had things in the fridge/freezer when she moved out 6 months before I don't know. I have a small dog and finding a place for the three months I would be in the area that would allow a pet was difficult. I did speak with Rebecca about the lack of cleanliness and the clutter in the room and her response was basically to tell me I should find another place to stay if I didn't like it. It was very stressful having to come to the house after work and look for another place. While I was looking, I saw the "Garden Suite" advertised on Craigslist for $1150/mo ($145 cheaper than on Airbnb). I feel like I got gouged and that Rebecca has a lot to learn about hospitality. I paid her $395/wk for 3 wks. I said I thought I should get the cleaning fee of $35 returned and she did return $22 saying that she only got that much from Airbnb despite my forwarding an e-mail from Airbnb showing the breakdown of the $482/wk I paid for the first week.
Perhaps thing were better/cleaner when she lived on the property but my experience was the worst I've had staying in an Airbnb property.
Janet was a problematic guest for me. I regret accepting her reservation, but fortunately I have had very few bad experiences (this being the worst) over the past many years hosting for Airbnb. The majority of my reviews (about me and by me about other people) speak to the overall positive experiences of myself and my guests.
Rebecca and her place are completely lovely. I had a great stay and would highly recommend her place to others. The house is in a great location with lots of delicious food right nearby.
This is a fabulous place to stay - everything in the description is spot-on, as we say in the UK. It's beautiful and the garden is lovely. Temescal is probably the most exciting place in the Bay Area right now and access to the city could not be easier.
Rebecca is great: a Berkeley native who knows San Francisco backwards and can help you in whatever artistic, culinary or adventure yen you may have.
If it's available, Grab It!
P.S. Oh, and Noodle is obliged by union statutory rules to growl at you for five minutes but is then the sweetest dog in the whole world and will be your friend for life.
Rebecca is an all right person, she should just reconsider some particulars where hosting is concerned
