If you’re heading our way—Downeast, as they say—to vacation in Acadia National Park, it’s a good bet you like spending time outdoors. Doing stuff. Being active. And at the end of a full day you appreciate a quiet retreat, away from the throng of your fellow visitors. A place to cook a fresh meal, grab a warm shower, curl up with a good book; and when the sun finally sets, step outside to marvel at a night sky unpolluted by town lights. If that describes you, the Hill Cottage is your retreat.

The space
The Hill Cottage is a showpiece, built by my wife's dad, Sam Murray—one of those Yankee craftsmen New England is famous for—whose skill and attention to detail is apparent when you step through the front door. And when I say Sam built the cottage, I mean practically everything. From the kitchen cabinets (oh, and not just the cabinets themselves, even the stain glass in the doorframes) down to much of the artwork that hangs on the walls. The result is a unique, comfortable and relaxing vacation retreat.

The cottage has a kitchen, dining area, living room with a flat screen TV with cable, and a bathroom with a tiled shower. The first floor bedroom has a queen bed; an upstairs loft, accessed by a spiral staircase, includes a sleeping area with a double bed, a desk for a quiet workspace, and a separate sitting and reading area with two comfortable sofas. A covered sitting area outside the cottage gets lots of sun.

The cottage is located in the rear of our property, slightly uphill and several hundred feet from our other buildings (our house and my wife Heather’s studio), and the cottage's front door faces away from both of them. This means you’ll be off in your own private area and won't need to interact with us—unless you want to wave to us as you drive by on your way to catch sunset on top of Cadillac Mountain or dinner at The Burning Tree.

Neighborhood highlights

I’m spoiled. I need quiet. When I travel, I have trouble sleeping unless there’s vault-like silence. It’s what happens living where we do. Back in the day, I lived in downtown Bar Harbor, but it was too noisy for me. The bars. The traffic. Lights blocking the night sky. Now, out here in the rural part of Mount Desert Island, I sleep like a stone in a place that's darker than a pocket. If you’re looking for that kind of quiet—save for the occasional coyote howling—check out the Hill Cottage.

The Hill Cottage’s rural location couldn’t be more ideal for a visitor: close enough to Bar Harbor that it isn’t a trek to make a run for groceries or to grab a meal at a restaurant, but far enough removed from the sometimes-crazy, summertime bustle of downtown that you get to enjoy the peace and quiet you expect on vacation.

Mount Desert Island isn’t that big—smaller than Long Island, bigger than Martha’s Vineyard—but being centrally located makes our property a great base from which to access all of the towns on the island and the many parts of Acadia National Park.
