The space
It takes 60 minutes by car to get to Mount Fuji from our place. You get the entire guesthouse to yourself. Our guesthouse has no stairs, so it is very kid friendly. In addition to having access to your own fully-equipped kitchen, you can also eat in the outdoor kitchen which connects to our beautiful Japanese garden. If you have kids, they can ride ripstiks in our huge garage. There are also bikes to borrow. If you are arriving on your own bicycle, there is a cycling path along the Kamanashi River that takes you within a few minutes of our door. Furthermore, we have a 1,000-foot (300-metre) well which produces delicious mineral water! Our place is an ideal sanctuary for exhausted travellers.

We have loads of space for kids to burn off energy! For cyclists, we have a workshop, tools and an air compressor. In addition, if you are arriving by bicycle, there is a cycling path along the Kamanashi River that takes you within a few minutes of our door.

Other things to note
Although my website is called Close to Mount Fuji, it actually takes 60 minutes by car to get to Mount Fuji from our place. If you are looking for new experiences off the beaten path, then you have come to the right place. My website is all about "slow tourism." Once you have had enough of over-crowded tourist traps, you inevitably end up searching for something more meaningful. It is my goal to provide such meaningful experiences to my clients. My tours have been featured in international magazines like Fortune, Monocle, Food & Wine, Omega Lifetime; on the Japan National Tourism Organization's website; and NHK World. Come discover deep Japan.

IF YOU WANT TO CLIMB MOUNT FUJI...

People have climbed Mount Fuji during their stay at my guesthouse, so I have created the following plan:

Request that I drive you to JR Kofu Station to catch the 5:50 am bus to Kawaguchiko Station (bus cost is ¥1,400). Catch a bus from Kawaguchiko Station to the fifth station on Mount Fuji (bus cost is ¥2,300 return). A recent guest caught the 7:30 am bus to the fifth station. He then ascended and descended the volcano in 7 hours (This guy was a very fit 25-year-old). He then caught the 14:20 bus from the fifth station back to Kawaguchiko Station (bus leaves every hour). Finally, he caught the 15:40 bus from Kawaguchiko Station back to JR Kofu Station where he caught the local train back to my guesthouse. Needless to say, he was exhausted! While bus service to Mount Fuji is reliable during the July to September climbing season, I cannot speak for the other times of year.

I personally prefer the hike from Umagaeshi to the fifth station. This hike is doable in any season, however, the bus to Umagaeshi only runs from Mount Fuji Station (Fujisan Station). Buses are available daily from the beginning of July to the end of August for ¥500 (one-way) or ¥930 (return). The bus leaves Mount Fuji Station (Fujisan Station) every hour, or thereabouts, between 9:10 and 15:00. The bus trip takes about 30 minutes. Once you have climbed to the fifth station, you can catch a bus back down the mountain. Having said all this, if you are going to climb Mount Fuji just once, and you are fit, I would climb from Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine. It will take longer, but if you are an obsessive control freak like me, you'll be able to rest assured that you didn't miss a thing!

We live surrounded by mountains, but there is a big shopping centre just 3-minutes walk away and a huge shopping mall just 15-minutes walk away. In addition, there is a fantastic and inexpensive fruit and vegetable shop just a 1-minute walk from the guesthouse. Furthermore, there are several restaurants and convenience stores within a few hundred metres of our guesthouse. Finally, we have a fantastic sushi delivery service. Although you can wash your clothing and dry it on the line at the guesthouse, dryers are available within a 5-minute walk of the guesthouse.
