Jaques and his lovely wife Anita are fantastic hosts. Whether you are on holiday or planning a longer term stay they can help you out.
The rental was great near the rice terraces and other beautiful landscapes. The family nearby were kind and it was an unforgettable experience.
Thank you again!
I can't say enough good things about our stay at Kas Komala, which lasted one month. Wayan, who handles the guests, was beyond friendly and helpful and she truly treated us like family. As someone who likes a quiet atmosphere, I was a bit worried that staying in a compound with a large Balinese family would be noisy but I barely heard anyone ever, and it still felt like a very private place. The family is lovely, and we were even invited to a wedding which was a very special experience. My birthday was during this time and they made me a cake and sung happy birthday...it was very touching!
The rooms are very clean, beds comfy, showers are nice and hot, kitchen equipped with what you need for cooking, a store right out front to buy snacks, drinks,etc.. and the internet connection was EXCELLENT...fast and never went down, which was important for us as we work online. Great (email hidden) authentic Balinese experience while still being a short motorbike ride to the center of Ubud.
Jaques and Anita are super-helpful and friendly, and can help you with anything you may need.
If you are looking to get a taste of Balinese life and want a more authentic Ubud experience, I highly recommend staying here.
We stayed our first four days here, and really wished we could have stayed longer. The rooms are on the 2nd floor at the back this family compound and were immaculately clean and tended to during our visit. The family is new to this type of service, but the family did a great job of taking care of us: they were warm and welcome, but not overly so. We felt comfortable enough to walk through the property and see their life unfold, but we could have just as easily not engaged with the family at all (some days we were too busy too!) and they would not have been offended.
Jacques provided just the kind of support we wanted: a mail, text or quick drop-by to see how all was going or to answer questions, and nothing more. He struck me as someone who adjusts quickly to the needs of travelers as they come. He arranged motorcycles for us, and gave us some good advice regarding restaurants and scenic drives. His help — combined with the family's — made for an excellent stay. Breakfast was simple (fried rice/noodles or pancakes) but included and served with a smile. We also ordered out once after having Wayan arrange massages on the balcony. All well worth the money (a little cheaper than town). The surrounding roads are very scenic. I really wished we made more time to explore them before we moved on.
The added benefit was that we were giving our money to a Balinese family , where those funds would help pay for a college education for one of the kids (Jacques's role is more as an English-speaking helper at the front-end).
Our experience overall was incredibly positive, and we would definitely consider returning (we've already talked about it, actually), however, a few small things that perspective renters should be aware of:
- the hot water is not consistent. this isn't a fancy resort, and so the shower can go suddenly cold and then hot again. This problem may have already been addressed.
- this is a family compound, with it's own mini-farm behind it. The occasional whiff of "farm" does hit the nostrils while on the deck, but we never smelled it on the bedrooms.
- where there's a farm, there are roosters. Many roosters. If you are a light sleeper who *also* sleeps in, this might be an issue for you. It wasn't for us (we wanted to be up at 7 or 8 every morning), but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention.
All of these things seem so minor compared to our experience there.
Thanks for being such great guests who can appreciate this type of experience. Wayan and the familly are extremely greatful that you selected Kas Komala of all the places you could have chosen in Ubud. I have raised the issue of the fluctuating hot water and they promise to look into it. Best regards, Jacques and Anita.

We are a Canadian / Indonesian couple residing permanently in Ubud. We enjoy renting out our property “Anita’s Villa” and meeting new people.
One thing that struck Anita early on as she quickly engaged with local Indonesians, was the struggle local Indonesian property owners have with the competitive edge and the increasing number of foreign investors.
The main challenges we identified were;
- language barrier,
- computer and internet technology skills and
- appreciating foreign living and hospitality standards
Anita who is Indonesian, her fluency in English and extensive experience in the hospitality industry, and my technology and communications, local property owners have turned to us for help and transfer knowledge to their young adults in hopes of becoming self sufficient, more effective property managers, help families and their local community economically and supplement the cost of education.
In a very short time we have grown to over 20 properties in the desirable and scenic area of Bentuyung and Junjungan villages. Local properties owners have already benefited from our assistance and we look forward to growing this association as the word and gossip spreads throughout the community.
