The Space

Private charming cottage ALL to yourself in authentic Hawaiian home near the beach. Stunning mountain view of Mt. Kalalea filmed in the movie King Kong out your kitchen window. The gentle sound of waves can be heard in the distance from your bedroom window at night. Walk to the local secluded beach where you can swim, snorkel, boogie board, surf, bask in the sun or take a long walk on the beach. The Anahola beach is a 3 minute drive or 25 minute walk from the cottage. Also walking distance is the local farmer's market every weekend, a convenience store for basic groceries, a Hawaiian shave ice stand and Kauai's best charbroiled hamburgers on the island.

The cottage is tucked away in a quiet local Hawaiian town for those who want to get away from it all, especially the tourism, and feel like you're in old Hawaii yet perfectly located to see everything on the island. We are halfway between the wetter and more lush north shore (Hanalei Bay and the world-famous Napali Coast) and the dryer south shore which is hotter and sunnier, but more touristy. Here in Anahola, the weather is absolutely perfect – sunny and warm virtually every day with occasional 3-5 minute refreshing tropical rain showers to bring everything to life. You can have the best of both worlds staying here and see ALL of Kauai from one place using our home as your home base and choose which way to go depending on the weather and your interests.

The cottage features your own private access, private outdoor deck, 1 queen bed (with memory foam mattress!) and 1 private bathroom with tub/shower. The cottage includes private parking, free high speed Internet, full kitchenette with 2 burner cooktop, toaster oven (no oven), full size refrigerator, blender, coffee maker, full set of pots, pans and dishware, outdoor BBQ for grilling, boogie boards, snorkel gear (masks, fins, snorkels), beach mats and umbrellas, beach towels, beach chairs and coolers ALL included at no additional charge so you don’t have to rent, buy or pack these items for your trip. Washer & Dryer available on the premises at $5 each per load (due to the very high cost of electricity in Hawaii). Hang drying clothes on clothes line encouraged to save energy and money on dryer fees :-)

The cottage is close enough to the beach that you can hear the gentle sound of waves in the background at night. Smell the fragrance of Plumerias (a favorite in leis), night blooming jasmines and gardenias that fill the air. Listen to the birds sing and coo all day long. Chickens with their baby chicks and scuttle through the yard looking for worms. Palm fronds and banana leaves flutter in the tropical breeze and dance in the rain. Banana trees burst with inflorescence producing an abundance of bananas. Coconuts drop daily so watch your head – if you’ve never had fresh coconut water, you’re in for a treat. Exotic birds of paradise mingle with the Papayas. My playful cats will entertain you and make you laugh. They are bursting with joy living in paradise and can’t help but show it. I feel the same way! I am fortunate to have found Airbnb to let other cool people know about my place with whom I can share a slice of paradise with. In every case without exception, everyone has one or more of the following experiences here: fun-filled, joyful, restful, peaceful, magical, memorable, spiritual, uplifting, life-inspiring and sometimes all of the above, especially if you sign up for one of our Epic Excursions (described in greater detail below) and offered exclusively to our guests.

If you want to experience the most magical and beautiful parts of Kauai not open to the public or found in any guidebooks, please let me know. While living on Kauai and spending quality time with local Hawaiians, I have been shown the most pristine and beautiful parts of Kauai, places most residents living on Kauai still haven't seen. I can arrange for you to be guided to the most surreal places with by far the best scenic views of the island (Top of the World), or experience the magnificent power of the largest waterfall on Kauai by literally being taken inside and behind the waterfall (Waterfall Immersion) or a day exploring Secret Caves and Coves frequented by turtles and dolphins, or rock hop up a river and hike through a green lush valley to the base of another stunning waterfall (Makaleha). These excursions vary in price and are not offered by anyone else. These are our discoveries and are only offered exclusively to our guests. Prices range between $75 - $125 per adventure for each person. It’s important to let me know if you want to take one of our epic adventures when booking so I can plan it during your stay on Kauai around the weather and our schedules. For this reason I advise all visitors NOT to book any activities or adventures prior to your arrival on Kauai. Virtually nothing books up full (even though they will try to tell you otherwise). It's best to wait and book boat tours, plane rides, hikes, etc after you get here around the highly unpredictable weather and ocean conditions so your plans don't get cancelled. I will also give you plenty of custom tailored free advice on what you can do on your own and how to make the most of your vacation on Kauai. Bring a list of what you want to do but plan your calendar around the weather and how you feel when you get here.

I live next door and know the island well, so I'm an excellent resource for choosing what's best to do on your island vacation, including where the best hikes are located, best snorkeling spots, where the dolphins and turtles swim, and the best secluded beaches, etc. I even loan you a copy of the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook during your stay so you can find your way to the best sights.

My spouse is Swiss so we can assist you in three languages: English, German or French.

The only way Airbnb lets you inquire and write to me is to first find available dates in my calendar first (even if you have to make them up). I highly recommend that you check for yourself by clicking on the "Calendar" Tab above the photos. This will substantially increase your chances of me accepting your reservation. If I'm already booked for your dates, please check the calendar on my other listing which are adjacent to each other on the same property (copy and paste the link below).

FACTOID: Did you know that when the Dalai Lama of Tibet came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1994, he asked to see only two places. Both requests were on Kauai and surprisingly he did not even ask to see the world-famous Napali Coast on Kauai. Instead, he asked to see Anahola and Polihale. When his surprised hosts asked why, he said "We [the spiritual leaders of Tibet] know Anahola is a portal where the souls or spirits enter this world and Polihale is where the souls or spirits exit this world." So there you have it, Anahola recommended by none other than the Dalai Lama himself. This is more than just a legend. There is a sacred pyramid shaped mountain peak in the backdrop of our home. In recent times this pyramid was filmed in the movie King Kong, but it's importance to Hawaiian history and culture is of much greater importance. There is a sacred birthing temple thousands of years old at the base of that mountain which is still guarded today by a living Kuhuna (Hawaiian priest of royal decent). Anahola is one of the most protected places on Kauai by the Hawaiians hence why there is very little tourism here and its the only town on this side of the island where portions are reserved exclusively for Hawaiians. Our home is one of the few in this Hawaiian village that is allowed to be owned and occupied by non-Hawaiians. We hope that you enjoy this unique opportunity to stay in a Hawaiian village far away from tourism yet conveniently located to see everything on the island from our home-base.

#1) I often get asked why am I being quoted a daily rate that is higher than the listing price? Our rates vary monthly and sometimes weekly based on demand and availability. The listing price is the usually the lowest available rate for the room. Your actual nightly rate can be seen on the calendar for your nights of interest. In addition, each listing is for a single person. There is an additional price of $25/night for each additional guest. A cleaning fee is also added plus an Airbnb booking fee. These get added up and divided across the total number of days in your inquiry to give you an "average daily" rate.

#2) Why can't you stay longer? We book up full all year around and we like to keep it fresh and give as many people as possible a chance to stay here, so we have a 2 week maximum stay on the private units.

#3) Why can't I stay just 1 or 2 nights? I have a 3 night minimum on all my units so I can balance my days spent cleaning with days off enjoying life. This makes me a happier healthier host. I will consider making an exception if there is only 1 or 2 nights open between bookings on my calendar.

#4) I'm not able to book a reservation with any of your listings, may I still join you for one of your epic adventures? We want to offer the very best service and give the greatest attention to guests staying with us without getting stretched too thin or distracted from our core business of being excellent hosts for those staying with us on Kauai. For this reason, we only take our guests on these epic adventures.

#5) Do I need a rental car while visiting Kauai? Unequivocally, the answer is YES, unless you don't mind missing out on 80% of the best sights on the island. All the sights worth seeing are spread out across the island and the local bus and hitch-hiking cannot get you to most of these sights. Remember, Kauai is a remote tropical island with low population, not a major city with tourist buses. That's why you're coming here right?

#6) Can I save money and rent from one of the discount car rental places? Without exaggerating 70% of discount car rentals are unreliable and have problems so you are likely to play car rally for your first few days and that's assuming they have another 'running' car to offer you. The best car rental choices are the national brands, e.g. Enterprise, Thrifty, Avis, Hertz, Dollar, etc. Most of you will NOT need an SUV or 4WD vehicle unless this is part of the thrill you are seeking. Our roads are paved.

#7) What the best way for me to be a great guest? Print out and bring the directions sent to you with your reservation confirmation. The rest is easy. Just be considerate of others, especially with respect to the quiet peaceful harmony on the property.

  • This is an incredible, magical, and peaceful place to stay. The accommodations are lovely, and you have access to such great locations in this cottage. The hostesses were so kind, helpful, and just solid good people. My husband and I did the "Top of the World Hike" and it was a highlight from our stay---awe inspiring views, and positive vibrations abound. This one is not to be missed. We lucked out staying here with a cancelation that happened, but will be booking much earlier next time. Rainstorms in the evening, followed by bright sunshine in the morning, fresh papaya from the trees in the backyard, all beneath the feet of the powerful Anahola Mt. If you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing, and charming spot....this is it! Aloha!

  • Everything about our stay here was absolutely incredible. Being in an area on the island that isn't covered in resorts, and having LOTS of great input from Sean made my wife and I feel more like locals and less like tourists during our 2 week stay here.

The 2 guided hikes we did with Sean were amazing as well. From the most breathtaking scenes we've ever seen from the "Top of the World" hike to an indescribable experience on the waterfall hike, these were definitely highlights of our trip. I would have to say that the power of the waterfall was likely my favorite part of our entire stay. Both hikes had a certain mystical value to them that you can really only understand by experiencing them.

The cottage itself is very cozy, but the main value of staying here I think is in how great of a host Sean is. She helped us have a far better stay and really appreciate how amazing of an island Kauai is. By our second week, my wife and I even found ourselves joking about being annoyed with "tourists", forgetting that we were actually tourists ourselves because of the great advice we got on how to experience the island like a local.

If you want a genuine Kauai experience and not a resort, I highly recommend this as a great place to stay for your trip to Kauai, and I know that we will be doing so again too!

  • We spent a few nights of our honeymoon in the Charming Cottage and I have to say it was not what we were expecting but in the best possible way.

Sean is an incredible host, very friendly and responsive and goes out of her way to make sure that you have a great experience not only at the cottage but all across the island.

She has great advice for what to avoid, what can't be missed and where the best little spots to grab some grub are. She even loans you a copy of one of the best guide books I've ever used.

But her private guided trips around the island were by far the highlight of our trip and I can't imagine having missed out on them now. Both Sean and her co-guide Alexsandra (sp?) are very knowledgeable, sweet and fun.

I don't have any complaints but be aware this is a beautiful old home in a quiet neighborhood. Since it is a little more rustic you get a little more rustic an experience complete with gecko's, spiders and other little bugs that fly. Don't let that bother you though it's all part of the adventure!

    Response from Sean:

Happy to hear we surprised you with more than imagined and that our extra effort made a sizable difference in your vacation. As you mentioned, our home is ideal for those wanting a more "natural" or authentic Hawaiian living experience. All homes and condos on Kauai are abundant with life, e.g. geckos, spiders, mosquitoes, etc. Screens and keeping doors closed helps a great deal. The hotels tend to spray their properties and rooms frequently to kill the life that is natural in the tropics. If you KNOW you're scared of insects, I highly recommend to all travelers to stay in a hotel to reduce your exposure to the unfamiliar. There's nothing poisonous here, but if you don't want to see bugs, a hotel is your best bet.

  • Anahola is a special place off the beaten track and this dwelling, part of a larger historic cheerfully painted wood clapboard beachhouse with other rooms/apartments for rent was a relaxed and cozy, private and safe place for me to land. I LOVED staying in this Mountain View "cottage" studio apartment it had everything I needed or could want including friendly and attentive management that offered a spectacular hike of the most beautiful ridge on Kauai. I WILL GO BACK AND STAY THERE AGAIN. And again. And again! That said this "cottage" is simple, colorful, comfortable and not for those looking for high-end air-conditioned fancy diggs to call home. Roosters are EVERYWHERE on Kauai and will crow any time of the day or night, and can be particularly loud when roosting in a tree right outside of the open windows - which on two nights one did. One must love Nature here - it is Omnipresent. Ghekkos everywhere - one even came in the apartment (I later discovered a dislodged screen which I adjusted) to sleep in the corner above the bed every night I was there. They are harmless and beautiful creatures. They eat bugs - this is good! Loved having Sean and Alexandra in charge of the place. So very welcoming! Alexandra was so sweet to be up in the middle of the night, my first night there, chasing the rogue rooster off his perch - and generously accommodated my impromptu request for an aspirin. Sean came by the next day (she asked first) to give me an overview of what the island has to offer and to answer any questions I may have had. She was a great and cheerful tour guide - very perceptive and appreciative of the natural beauty around her. She also let me in my apartment when I locked myself out early one morning without fuss. You can hear the ocean surf at night, and see the sun come in the windows over the bed in the morning. There is a nice small deck outside the kitchen window with table and chairs and plants. The private entrance with a little Aloha sign welcomes you back each time you return . The cats on the property are sweet. Thank you Sean and Alexandra!!!!

    Response from Sean:

Thank you Jeanne for this very articulate description. Yes, one must love nature to stay here or in any private home on Kauai. There is no such thing as a home on Kauai without life inside. Geckos abound abundantly and fortunately they are adorable to watch and eat all the bugs, including mosquitoes! Wild chickens and roosters roam everywhere... they will even greet you at the airport, the grocery store parking lot, the beach, etc. Kauai is definitely teeming with life.

  • Lovely, quiet, and magical. Sean is incredibly knowledgeable and will help you coordinate anywhere you want to go on the island! The accommodations were so delightful -- clean, cozy and comfortable. Good vibes all around...
Would recommend this space for anyone interested in exploring a genuine Kauai experience! We had such an amazing time, thanks in large part to Sean :-)
    Good stuff!

  • Clean. Well stocked. Convenient location.

  • Such a wonderful experience in the Charming Cottage. Really quaint, and a great location to explore the island. Sean took the time when we arrived to talk to us for a long time about what exactly we wanted out of our vacation and gave us some great ideas. Would definitely come back again!

    Response from Sean:

Mahalo Colleen for your review. Glad the time I spent with you upon your arrival helped tailor your vacation to suit your interests. Looking forward to your return.

  • 4 Thumbs up! The place was super clean, plenty big, in a nice tucked away local part of town. Sean was super attentive when we first arrived and came and met us and said hello, with some tips, trails, beaches, restaurants and just general information. The available snorkels and and fins and miscellaneous beach gear was a great benefit as well. Would stay at any of Sean's places in the future!

If you see complaints about the noise or the roosters, then you should realize that there are few non hotel places where you can escape from the roosters in the morning. just helps you get up and at the day in paradise.

    March 2014
    Response from Sean:

Thanks Keith for your candid review, especially your comment about the ever-present roosters everywhere on the island (except for possibly the hotels who move the roosters to the local neighborhoods!). We have chased many of them away as well so it's much quieter now. Staying here is a very local experience living in nature where wild chickens, roosters, cats and pigs run wild. We are surrounded by avocado, tangerine, banana, papaya and coconut trees too. Everything is maintained by mother nature in perfect harmony.

  • Overall this was an excellent place to stay on Kauai. The location itself was hard to find at first, but afterwards was easily accessible and provided the ideal location for day trips around the north side of the island.

For the actual cottage, it was clean and had a very authentic Hawaiian feel with all the amenities I needed.

    March 2014
    Response from Sean:

Thanks Joseph. Bringing directions is a must for finding our place. Glad you found us and enjoyed your stay in our Hawaiian home.

  • My boyfriend and I had a FANTASTIC time at the charming cottage. Sean greeted us with open arms. She spent time with us to answer any questions we had about Kaua’i and helped us plan our holiday. She was always available for us and is super reliable. We loved Kaua’i so much we are still here and we still hang out with Sean and Alex even though we don’t live there anymore. They are so friendly and fun to be with.
The charming cottage is very well located. Far enough from the tourist scene but still close to the beaches, restaurants, shops… The kitchen is fully equipped. The bed is soooooo comfortable.
Kaua’i, the host and the cottage are absolutely amazing! You gotta experience this at least once in your life. And if your like many, including us, you might just end up staying much longer than you had planned.

    March 2014
    Response from Sean:

Ahhhh we so appreciate your energy and how well you embraced this charming cottage and our friendship. We are delighted you fell in love with Kauai as well after just a week in the cottage. It does cast a magical spell on guests and so lovely when this happens to such a wonderful couple who are ready for the magic of Kauai.

Here's a bit about me since we'll be sharing space if you stay with me and I want to be sure we're a good fit even if just temporarily sharing living space or staying next door in one of our private suites. I'm a vibrant, happy, healthy, and youthful feeling 49 year old woman who loves to surf, kayak, paddle board, run, dance and ski. OK, well no skiing here on Kauai but willing to give up that passion for warm tropical paradise. I surf or paddle board regularly at nearby beaches pretty much all year around. I regularly explore new beaches and new places to hike and have discovered some extraordinary places you can spend a day by yourself in paradise. Happy to send you in the right direction if interested in any of the above. I am also married to the love of my life who I met while staying here as an Airbnb guest! My partner is Swiss so we can communicate with you in German and French as well, a real benefit if you sign up for one of our Epic Excursions and prefer one of these languages over English. As for your vacation tips, since that's why you're REALLY reading this, I'm an excellent resource for choosing what's best to do on the island whether it's where to swim with the dolphins or turtles, where the most exclusive beaches are located, where are the best uncrowded hikes, and so much more. If you do Kauai on your own without local advice, you're sure to miss the real gems. If we really get along, I'll take you to some local happenings that tourists never get to hear about or find on their own. Are you intrigued yet? My lifestyle is a very healthy one, both nutritiously and physically. I go to the farmer's market every week for locally grown fruits and vegetables cut fresh that morning and shop at the local health food stores. I spend most of my "free" time either outside enjoying nature being physical in the water OR inside the kitchen where I enjoy being a nutritional alchemist coming up with tasty elixirs of life :) Hmmm, what does that mean? I enjoy creating life-inspiring healthy foods and treats that naturally make you feel happy and your body fit (which is without exaggerating 80% diet and 20% exercise). I have developed some gluten-free, sugar-free, butter-free chocolate chip cookies that my friends call "Sean's Fantasy" cookies. In general I have a very conscious lifestyle that's highly connected to nature and the spirit of things. So, I'm totally into nutrition having discovered natural fountains of youth in longevity herbs and superfoods, e.g. noni, fo-ti root, shilajit, mangosteen, blue-green algae, and my specialty RAW CACAO that naturally releases endorphins and serotonin that make you feel happy for no particular reason :) Want my recipe? Happy to share it with you. Now, having said all that, I'm NOT vegan or even vegetarian (they have great fresh fish and grass fed beef here on Kauai) so don't worry about cooking whatever suits your fancy. I don't provide breakfast or any meals, so you're on your own, but there's room in my refrigerator for your groceries and you're welcome to prepare your meals at home. Whatever food gets left behind, I donate to the local youth hostel down the road so no food gets wasted here. I'm a retired electrical engineer and computer scientist from Berkeley and Silicon Valley so I invent things, but I promise I'm not a geek. I'm very open and sociable, but surprisingly quiet too. I'm really laid back and crave the quiet, peaceful, harmonious energy in my home. Happy to share this with you if this is what you're looking for. My place isn't fancy and neither am I. Visualize and feel the energy of an old Hawaiian cabin and that's what you can expect here. If you're even wondering if I have A/C, you may want to reconsider a hotel instead. NO homes on Kauai will run A/C. The Hawaiian Islands ship in over a billion dollars in diesel fuel annually to run our electricity and so you can only find A/C in hotel rooms. Homes happily rely on old fashioned tropical breezes to cool off. I'm clean and tidy and did I mention quiet? I prefer the same with visiting guests. I read a lot and listen to music with headphones and play with my cats when I'm not creating food/drink concoctions in the kitchen or playing in the garden, but most of the time I'm out exploring heaven on earth. Come stay with me and I'll share a slice of heaven with you.
