Private charming cottage (with stunning mountain view) ALL to yourself in authentic Hawaiian home near the Anahola river. The gentle sound of waves can be heard in the distance from your bedroom window at night. You can walk to the local secluded beach where you can swim, snorkel, boogie board, surf, bask in the sun or take a long walk on the beach. The Anahola beach is less than a mile down the river (3 minute drive or 25 minute walk). We are also walking distance to the local farmer's market every weekend, a convenience store for basic groceries, a Hawaiian shave ice stand and Kauai's best charbroiled hamburgers on the island.
The cottage is tucked away in a quiet local Hawaiian town for those who want to get away from it all, especially the tourism, and feel like you're in old Hawaii yet perfectly located to see everything on the island. We are halfway between the wetter and more lush north shore (Hanalei Bay and the world-famous Napali Coast) and the dryer south shore which is hotter and sunnier, but more touristy. Here in Anahola, the weather is absolutely perfect – sunny and warm virtually every day with occasional 3-5 minute refreshing tropical rain showers to bring everything to life. You can have the best of both worlds staying here and see ALL of Kauai from one place using our home as your home base and choose which way to go depending on the weather and your interests.
The cottage features your own private access, private outdoor deck, 1 queen bed (with memory foam mattress!) and 1 private bathroom with tub/shower. The cottage includes private parking, free high speed Internet, full kitchenette with 2 burner cooktop, toaster oven (no oven), full size refrigerator, blender, coffee maker, full set of pots, pans and dishware, outdoor BBQ for grilling, boogie boards, snorkel gear (masks, fins, snorkels), beach mats and umbrellas, beach towels, beach chairs and coolers ALL included at no additional charge so you don’t have to rent, buy or pack these items for your trip. Washer & Dryer available on the premises at $5 each per load (due to the very high cost of electricity in Hawaii). Hang drying clothes on clothes line encouraged to save energy and money on dryer fees :-)
The cottage is close enough to the beach that you can hear the gentle sound of waves in the background at night. Smell the fragrance of Plumerias (a favorite in leis), night blooming jasmines and gardenias that fill the air. Listen to the birds sing and coo all day long. Chickens with their baby chicks and scuttle through the yard looking for worms. Palm fronds and banana leaves flutter in the tropical breeze and dance in the rain. Banana trees burst with inflorescence producing an abundance of bananas. Coconuts drop daily so watch your head – if you’ve never had fresh coconut water, you’re in for a treat. Exotic birds of paradise mingle with the Papayas. My playful cats will entertain you and make you laugh. They are bursting with joy living in paradise and can’t help but show it. I feel the same way! I am fortunate to have found Airbnb to let other cool people know about my place with whom I can share a slice of paradise with. In every case without exception, everyone has one or more of the following experiences here: fun-filled, joyful, restful, peaceful, magical, memorable, spiritual, uplifting, life-inspiring and sometimes all of the above (especially if you sign up for one of our Epic Excursions (described in greater detail below) created just for our guests and those lucky enough to find us).
Epic Excursions: If you want to experience the most magical and beautiful parts of Kauai not open to the public or found in the guidebooks, please let me know. While living on Kauai and spending quality time with local Hawaiians, I have been shown the most pristine and beautiful parts of Kauai, places most residents living on Kauai still haven't seen. I can arrange for you to be guided to the most surreal places with by far the best scenic views of the island (Top of the World), or experience the magnificent power of the largest waterfall on Kauai by literally being taken inside and behind the waterfall (Waterfall Shower) or a day exploring Secret Caves and Coves frequented by turtles and dolphins, or rock hop up a river and hike through a green lush valley to the base of another stunning waterfall (Makaleha). These excursions vary in price depending on the number of guests and are not offered by anyone else. These are our discoveries and are only offered to our guests (or those lucky enough to find us). It’s very important to check available right away to plan this during your stay on Kauai around the weather and our schedules. Please inquire if this interests you.
I live next door and know the island well, so I'm an excellent resource for choosing what's best to do on your island vacation, including where the best hikes are located, best snorkeling spots, where the dolphins and turtles swim (including their caves), and where are the best secluded beaches, etc.
My partner is Swiss so we can assist you in three languages: English, German or French.
The only way Airbnb lets you inquire and write to me is to first find available dates in my calendar first (even if you have to make them up). I highly recommend that you check for yourself by clicking on the "Calendar" Tab above the photos. If it's already booked for your dates, please check the calendars on my other listings which are adjacent to each other on the same property (see bottom right hand corner of this webpage for the other listings).
FACTOID: Did you know that when the Dalai Lama of Tibet came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1994, he asked to see only two places. Both requests were on Kauai and surprisingly he did not even ask to see the world-famous Napali Coast on Kauai. Instead, he asked to see Anahola and Polihale. When his surprised hosts asked why, he said "We [the spiritual leaders of Tibet] know Anahola is a portal where the souls or spirits enter this world and Polihale is where the souls or spirits exit this world." So there you have it, Anahola recommended by none other than the Dalai Lama himself. This is more than just a legend. There is a sacred pyramid shaped mountain peak in the backdrop of our home. In recent times this pyramid was filmed in the movie King Kong, but it's importance to Hawaiian history and culture is of much greater importance. There is a sacred birthing temple thousands of years old at the base of that mountain which is still guarded today by a living Kuhuna (Hawaiian priest of royal decent). Anahola is one of the most protected places on Kauai by the Hawaiians hence why there is very little tourism here and its the only town on this side of the island where portions are reserved exclusively for Hawaiians. Our home is one of the few in this Hawaiian village that is allowed to be owned and occupied by non-Hawaiians. We hope that you enjoy this unique opportunity to stay in a Hawaiian village far away from tourism yet conveniently located to see everything on the island from our home-base.
P.S. I have a 3 night minimum on all my units, unless there's only 2 nights open between bookings, then I will consider making an exception.
DO YOU NEED A RENTAL CAR? Often I get asked if a car is necessary on Kauai. Unequivocally, the answer is YES, unless you don't mind missing out on 80% of the best sights on the island. All the sights worth seeing are spread out across the island and the local bus and hitch-hiking cannot get you to most of these sights. The next most common question is about discount car rentals. Without exaggerating 70% of discount car rentals are unreliable and have problems so you are likely to play car rally for your first few days and that's assuming they have another 'running' car to offer you. The best car rental choices are the national brands, e.g. Enterprise, Thrifty, Avis, Hertz, Dollar, etc.

What a nice little spot. The room was very clean and well looked after, ready for to me to walk right into after a long day and relax. Sean is a fantastic host, gives lots of space which makes the stay that much better, but very helpful at the same time. Mine was a shirt stay so I can't really say much more, but I wouldn't have stayed at all if Sean hadn't been able to help make my plans work for me. Anahola is an amazing little spot. Mahalo S
This is a lovely studio apartment ideally located to get to both ends of the island in a short drive and lots of things in between. We really liked this place and would recommend it.
Before AirBnB became big, I had found a website for this charming little cottage and I bookmarked it, hoping that one day, I might make it to this magical island called Kauai. I am so glad I did, because this cottage (and Anahola in general) was as wonderful as I had imagined! It was a perfect base camp for exploring the island. Sean was lovely and amazing, giving us ideas for how to spend our time, lending us a Hawaii Revealed guide book. She hooked us up with a guide to the most amazing and challenging hike - it's as incredible as in the photos. I neglected to bring really solid hiking shoes - I had a pair of climbing approach hiking tennies, but upon consulting with Sean, she recommended deeper grooves in the tread of the shoe. I'm glad she advised us, because the hike was really muddy and slick. Sean had some shoes to lend, but not in my size. Luckily, there was a Birkenstock store up the street in Kapa'a that happened to have a good hiking shoe in my size.
We woke up one morning to a rainbow outside our window. We loved being able to cook dinner - the kitchen is stocked with all the equipment you might need. While we didn't take advantage of it, there's beach equipment and a washer and dryer available.
We were in Kauai for 5 days, and it wasn't nearly enough. We barely scratched the surface, so WHEN we come back, we will definitely stay here again!
Ah lovely Kerry! Thank you for your appreciation of our charming little cottage here in this magical town of Anahola on Kauai. Wonderful to hear that you realized your dream come true when you bookmarked our listing and it turned out to be as wonderful as you imagined it to be. Thanks for advising future guests to bring "real" hiking boots/shoes to enjoy Kauai's stunning trails through heavenly valleys and vistas... especially our exclusive Top of the World adventure.
Clean and cosy room. Sean was very helpful and a caring host with lots of good ideas about having some adventure on Kauai. The only thing i have to say is, that this is not a cottage. I mean not in my understanding of a cottage. I was expecting a single standing house, but actually it's a flat in a house. Still worth booking, you just need to know what you're booking.
We had a great stay with Sean. Listen to Sean and there is no way you will have a bad time. Let the chickens dictate your pace, catch the sunrise on the private beach (15 min walk). Sean took note of our early evenings and introduced us to a German board game called Dog, which was tons of fun, and saved me from having to play Yahtzee. She also gave us some scented flowers for our room in a little shot glass. Another reviewer described Sean as attentive without being invasive, which I think is a good way of putting it.
We hung out with Lizzy the little green lizard and Carl the cane spider during our stay, even the bugs are polite at this cozy cottage, but they are present. Sean provides lots of equipment for your beach going needs, but I would stop by the ABC store and get a 10 dollar snorkel and mask. The snorkeling gear had seen its better days. Everything else looked good. The cottage is open to the breeze and you will find you sleep well listening to the rain outside. Get a small SUV for your visit, our C-MAX took a serious beating.
We also took the Top of the World trip. Sean is an experienced guide and made the trip possible for all skill levels of hiker. We saw at least 20 different rainbows on that hike!
Overall the stay could not have been better. I would recommend to anyone who is not hoity toity.
Thank you Ben for your very thoughtful review. I appreciate the way you described the abundant life in the form of lizards, geckos, bugs, insects, spiders and more that are present everywhere on Kauai. This can be a surprise for guests coming to the tropics for the first time. Beware: Kauai is ALIVE! If this scares you, I encourage guests to book a hotel room instead of a private home. Regarding the snorkel gear, we have plenty of fins, but the masks are limited... the good ones keep disappearing and being a free benefit it's hard to keep replacing them. Very much enjoyed guiding you through countless rainbows on Top of the World.
Had a lovely stay in this charmer. Very cozy and had everything I needed. I was only here for a few days, but will definitely stay when I return and would recommend. Sean gave very good instructions for finding the place, loved the local general store and burger stand. I appreciated Sean's tips in her welcome letter and even caught a morning sunrise thanks to one of her suggestions. I was in and out exploring the island so only met Sean briefly on my last day, but found her to be kind, open and helpful.
Sean's place is a nice, private space away from all the tourist areas. The roosters were not bothersome for us unlike what some others have indicated. It would be advisable to turn off all lights at night otherwise bugs are attracted to them.
The unit is cozy and rustic. It is very quiet and it feels nice to be close to nature with a lot of trees around and views of the mountain. It is pretty close to the North shore which is definitely the most awesome part of Kauai.
Sean was very welcoming and provides a bunch of beach gear which is great.
Kauai is amazing and we will return some day!
Mahalo Kaustav for your thoughtful feedback. Glad to hear roosters weren't that disturbing as they are everywhere on Kauai... I would have to agree with you (as will most residents and visitors on Kauai) the North shore is the most beautiful part of Kauai. We are very conveniently located on the North east (the sunny part!). See you again someday.
this cottage was just what we were looking for. if you want to stay away from the resort scene this is the place for you. we had a wonderful time, and sean organized an amazing hike for us that we will never forget.
The studio is very cozy, in friendly colours, and perfectly equipped with everything you might ever need, from books to kitchen gear, including all beach accessories. You really only need to bring a toothbrush and a bikini. And it's spick and span, too. A place to get comfortable immediately.
Yes, the roosters will cockadoodle the living daylight out of you, as others have commented before, but there is probably no escape from that on the entire island. And earplugs come with the studio as well.
Anahola is local and has nothing going on from what we saw, wich is just what we wanted, but nearby historic Kapa'a has all kinds of places to eat, shop, go for walks etc.
Sean and Alexandra are extremely likeable and forthcoming yet unintrusive, and they generously catered to our extra wishes asap (I asked for an extra foam-topper as the bed was a little hard for me e.g.!) Thanks a lot to both!!
Kauai is heaven and I would stay with these hosts and any of their rooms again anytime!
We loved our stay with Sean and Alex!
For us this was really a perfect fit. Sean was a wealth of great information on the island and recommendations for things to see and do. Our Top of the World hike and Waterfall Adventure with Sean were DEFINITELY the two highlights of our vacation, as well as enjoying her company along the way! She was endlessly patient, fun, interesting, and cheerful. Our little apartment was clean, convenient, and very comfortable. The bed was comfortable (and we both have temperamental backs). Their neighborhood is quiet so no worries about wild parties keeping you up at night. I loved all the windows to hear the breeze through the trees and the rain at night.
Thanks Sean and Alex, for a great time and unbeatable memories!
Mahalo Suzie and Kim for this awesome review covering so many important details for guests looking for insights and tidbits of what to expect here. So happy to hear the bed was comfortable. We have gone the extra mile to ensure our beds, linens, blankets and pillows are excellent quality. It was such a delight to take you both on your adventure highlights on Top of the World and the Waterfall Shower. Thank you for allowing us to take your vacation to the next level.
