Tired of the hostel scene? In our simple, clean, home, relax in your bed hearing birds chirping, frogs croaking, and wind rustling. Practice your Spanish as Teresita makes you breakfast--and the public bus stops just at the end of our road!
Our peaceful location is outside the hustle and bustle of the tourist center of Santa Elena, but town is a short and pleasant walk away.
Our eco-friendly home is simple and personal. You will be living with our family but have your own private bedroom with a comfortable bed. For many years we have had students in the area come stay with us -- we love sharing our home and life with travelers from all lands!
Eli built our home here in the forest, where we can listen to the the abundant life of the mountains of Monteverde. You'll find peace and tranquility here, but have easy access to enjoy the town's restaurants and activities.
Let Eli indroduce you the orchids on the trees outside the front door, and the hole where the toucan babies live. Teresita will love to help you set up tours, call taxis, and plan your trip to this beautiful area.
We are happy to provide a Spanish Immersion experience, but daughter Tracy speaks excellent English should you need it.
Please feel free to use our kitchen, gather eggs from the hens, and enjoy the living space.
Interaction with Guests
Our home is small, so there's plenty of opportunity to interact. However, you should feel very free to simply be quiet and private in your own room.
Taxis are inexpensive and plentiful, and are the way most people get around in Monteverde. In addition, the public bus from San Jose/Alajuela passes right by our house two times each day on its way to Santa Elena and Monteverde.
We can also help you arrange private transportation to anywhere in Costa Rica.
Other Things to Note
Teresita makes the most delicious tortillas in all of Monteverde.
You are welcome to smoke on the property, but not in the house.
We are a family house; responsible drinking is allowed, but no partying and absolutely no drugs.
Had a wonder stay at the mountain cabin. Adorable family and very welcoming. Homemade breakfast was made for us and we were able to get all our tours booked through them. I recommend this place for a cabin feel.
We only stayed one night in Teresita & Eli's wooden cabin, but they made absolutely everything to make us feel at home. And they managed. Teresita welcomed us with some pancakes, Eli took us with him for a walk around the property. The wooden cabin was perfect, it has everything you might need, right in the middle of the peaceful forest. We left really early in the morning but Teresita insisted to prepare some breakfast for us: she made some amazing gallo pinto with eggs, plantains and toasts that made us start the day in the best way possible. She also took us to the bus stop and waited with us in the wind.
She told us their goal was to make their hosts feel like part of the family, they surely managed!
It was really nice to stay in a family setting like this. Just out of town, still walking distance, so really quiet but still really close to all the activities Santa Elena/Monteverde has to offer. They were very friendly, we felt they really wanted to make our stay perfect. Sweet people, very helpful too. The apartment was big a had a great view!
Teresita and Eli are simply incredible. The entire time we spent at and nearby was just the best. It took us some time to get from Liberia to Monteverde/Santa Elena, but Tracey was very helpful in giving us the directions we needed. This is just on the way to their place.
When we got there, we thought we'd walk in for a quick introduction. Nope, we spent over an hour making jokes, planning the next couple of days, and we were overwhelmed by how welcoming and loving they were to complete strangers. We planned and discussed many alternatives on what to visit and they even had tickets for us and arranged for transportation right at their doorstep.
The time we spent at their place was the most intense time we had because we went to bed late and woke up super early and we weren't even tired. We had some super delicious food that Teresita made. I don't know what magic she does, but her eggs, rice and beans, FRIED PLANTAINS (dios mío!!!!), bread, and juice were out of this world. The best part: all the food was so fresh and delicious. I could go on about their amazing food forever, but I'll stop. Also, her coffee is 1(phone number hidden)better than anything else.
Teresita was so nice and thoughtful the entire time. The immersion component is literally 100% true. Tracey helped us only when we needed to (but she was ready to save us from embarrassing ourselves with poor español hahaha). Teresita listened patiently and helped me improve in the two days we were there. She and Eli were very helpful and asked us if we had any questions and they knew the area and everyone there. She and Tracey baked cookies for one of the tour guide drivers, and the family knows EVERYONE in the area and everyone says the best things about them. Eli took us on a morning walk and he showed us a bunch of birds and little critters in his own backyard. 10/10 best morning walk ever and Eli is a genius and knows everything about the area. He is super friendly, laid back, and Elite and Teresita are literally made for one another.
The place is pura vida! Eli built the cabins in two months and it smells super fresh. The place is amazing. Your room comes with the freshest mountain air and mist with the most comfortable temperatures all free of charge. It's very well lit, extremely clean, and has all the amenities you would need. If you see this place available for your travel dates, book it immediately and don't think twice. Your tastebuds, brain, and heart (in no specific order) will thank you for years to come :)
Abhi and I miss Eli, Teresita, and Tracey. We wish our entire trip could have been at their house or nearby. We are definitely returning to Monteverde and coming back to stay with them again. 10/10 they're super hosts for a reason.
Teresita and Eli were so incredibly welcoming, they truly made us feel like family - even insisting we join a family dinner they were enjoying one evening. Their cute cabin is located on a wooded mountain about a mile away from town on the main road, very close to a gas station and a short, cheap cab ride from downtown Santa Elena. Eli and his family built the cabin very recently and everything feels fresh and new. The breakfasts prepared by Teresita in the morning are huge and delicious - make sure you try her gallo pinto, its the best we've had yet in Costa Rica. While their English is good, try out your spanish with the family, they love to talk and help you practice! Would absolutely stay here again :)
Our stay with our Costa Rican family was wonderful. Terisita and Eli were very kind and welcoming, and helped us book various activities in Monte Verde. Our room was a little hidden cabin in the woods and it was perfect. We will most definitely return in the future!
