The Space

Located just 2 miles from the Southwest Harbor town center, this private summer cottage is tucked in the woods on the quietside of Mount Desert Island (home to Acadia National Park.) Our rates vary from month to month, but in all cases discounts are available for bookings of 7 days or more.

This two bedroom cottage has a small pond off the deck and a peek-a-boo view of the ocean and mountains. There are two bedrooms (one king and one with twin beds), a full bath with double sinks, tub and shower, a great room with kitchen, dining, and living space, plus a small pantry and laundry area. The house is completely furnished with kitchen equipment, linens, games, and books.

Manset is the home of the famous Hinckley Boat Yard and some of the most beautiful views of Somes Sound, the mountains, and the waters of Mt. Desert Island. The surrounding area of Mt. Desert Island is rich with beauty and loaded with things to do. Hiking and biking on Acadia National Park trails, sailing, motor boating, beachcombing, swimming, rock climbing, golfing, whale watching, antique shopping and eating delicious seafood are among the many activities within a very short drive of Manset.

The Island Explorer (a free local shuttle bus) stops nearby. It is seasonal (June to September.) Ferry service to the local islands is nearby as well at the Manset town dock.

  • Pure delight in the woods, just as described. Lovely, solidly built cottage, easy to find and warmly welcomed. Excellent communication from our hosts. Big sleeping rooms, bigger common room, perfect retreat from a day hiking, as well as shelter from the storm (we were there for the back part of a hurricane). We are so pleased to have found the Spruce Cottage on the "quiet side" of the Island to serve as our home base to treat our young daughters to what Mt. Desert has to offer.

  • We just got back from a fantastic long weekend in Jennie and Andy's cottage. It's in an absolutely BEAUTIFUL location on the "quiet side" of MDI very close to the center of Southwest Harbor. The cottage itself is perfect - very clean, well stocked (all the kitchen supplies you could want, lots of fresh towels and spare sheets), cozy, and comfortable. The rooms have overhead fans which made the cottage perfect for sleeping. And we loved sitting outside and having afternoon drinks on the deck!

The cottage is a bit of a drive (~25-30 mins) from some of the more popular Acadia/MDI sites, like Cadillac Mountain or Bar Harbor, but it's worth it to stay on this side of the island and there is plenty to see nearby - we did the Ship Harbor and Wonder Land walks and they were fantastic. We were also very close to Thurston's Lobster Pound, the best place to get fresh lobster and steamers on the island.

We saw Andy a few times during the course of the weekend - he very sweetly brought me a bottle of wine for my birthday! - but we definitely felt we had all the privacy we wanted while we were there.

I cannot wait to stay at Andy and Jennie's cottage again - it was absolutely perfect and my only regret is we weren't there longer!!

  • This was a fabulous cottage - a very relaxing retreat complete with a duck and her ducklings by the pond just nearby. Everything needed was thoughtfully on hand - including picnic ware. The hosts were EXTREMELY helpful! We left a bag in the cottage and they went to considerable trouble to help solve our problem and ship it to us in Boston. This was my only my second experience of airbnb and I am impressed! The special effort that Andy put in to returning our bag was exceptional. I strongly recommend this cottage and these hosts - a special place hosted by special people.

  • This cozy cottage in South-West harbor is lovely. I stayed here for a week with a friend of mine to unwind, May 2014. It was the perfect place for us; small enough to keep tidy and organised, close enough to everything we wanted to do on Mt Desert and Bar Harbor with a little driving. We walked the dogs around the neighborhood frequently and it's very quiet and pleasant.

I imagine in peak season this place is a gem, offering respite away from the Bar Harbor crowds.

  • We were 2 girls looking for a quiet place in nature to rest and hike for a couple of days, and this cottage was the perfect place. There is everything you need in there. The village is beautiful, and the hosts leave lots of suggestions of were to go. I really appreciated that. It is worth being a little bit away from Bar Harbor, it feels more quiet and authentic. Andy came one day to check if everything was okay, he was really nice, and the rest of the time we felt like we were alone even though their house is just behind. Within 5 or 10 minutes by car, you can be in front of the sea or deep in the woods. And you can walk or bike to the nearest grocery store. I really loved the place and will surely come back.

  • This cottage was the perfect place to stay on MDI! The "quiet side" of the island was refreshing, relaxing, and beautiful. Southwest Harbor has several great restaurants that are within a five minute drive. The house had everything you would need. We would recommend this cottage for any season but fall was a particularly nice time to be on MDI with fall foliage and much smaller crowds than the summertime. Andy was super helpful with suggestions of things to do, places to see, and there is a binder full of information on the kitchen table that was very useful. We could easily have spent our entire trip just in Southwest Harbor - there is plenty to see and do there, both in and out of Acadia (website hidden) Harbor and the other side of the island are less than a 30 minute drive from the cottage. There are many hiking trails within a 10 minute drive from the cottage within the national park. Sunrise in Southwest Harbor is a must and you can walk less than one block from the cottage to see it from the Manset town dock.

  • On a positively beautiful island this is a great place to stay. The cabin is both cozy and roomy (if that is possible). Located in a quiet corner of the island across the street from the shore. Very easy to find and a great place from which to begin day trips. Jennie and Andy are wonderful hosts as well. We had a great time and will definitely return and stay at the cabin.

  • A lovely cottage. I would rate it one of the best places I've stayed.

  • Lovely cottage in a beautiful area. Andy was welcoming and thoughtful. Many pamphlets around with information about activities and restaurants. We would stay again!

  • The cabin is great, located on a quiet street. Jennie and Andy were both great hosts and very responsive when necessary. We stayed with our 2.5 yr old and its a great layout for families.
There is a pond on the property which attracted quite a few mosquitoes so we weren't able to use the deck/grill. Overall a nice place and would recommend it.

We are retired school teachers who now live in down east Maine near Acadia National Park, where we run a small cottage rental business. We can consider home exchanges in the off-season. We are always looking for an opportunity to travel to the San Francisco area since we have family there.
