About This Listing
Enjoy the convenience of a private entrance to our finished basement bed and bath suite located blocks away from Camp Randall Stadium, campus and the vibrant Monroe St neighborhood. We are also on the bus route and across the street from a bike path!
Our lower level is a bright space with a large window that supplies plenty fresh air and light. The adjacent bathroom is reserved solely for the use of guests during their stay, so feel free to decompress a little! In addition, the suite also includes a den with a TV if you feel the need for vegetating after a long day of biking and hiking around town. You can also visit with our friendly pet rabbit, Toro, who shares the laundry room.
Hey Badger fans, we can see Camp Randall Stadium from our backyard and we love hosting fellow fans during football season!
Epic visitors - During special events such as XGM and UGM, there is usually a shuttle you can use to commute to and from the Epic campus departing from the nearby HotelRed.
You have free access to the entire basement, which includes the bedroom, living room, bathroom, and laundry facilities. The living room and kitchen on the first floor is shared space but we'd prefer if you let us know if you are planning on using the kitchen so we can plan accordingly. You can also use our extra parking spot in the alley behind our home if you are arriving by car, but there's also usually street parking available.
Interaction with Guests
If you're feeling chatty, feel free to pop upstairs and socialize with us. We'd love to give you advice on which restaurants to try, which bike paths to take, how to ride the bus!
The Monroe St area is full of funky independent shops and trendy restaurants. We have several favorites within walking distance, so feel free to ask for recommendations! We also are located just a few blocks from beautiful Vilas Park, which borders Wingra lake and is home to the free Vilas Zoo.
We're close enough to walk to just about everything, but if you're feeling the need for speed, we're also on several bus routes. My favorite way to explore Madison is by bike. You can jump on the bike path across the street from our house and get just about anywhere. All that pedaling means no guilt when stopping for ice cream at Memorial Union! We can also loan you our bikes as long as you promise to keep 'em locked up when not in use. Other options include the bike rental station across the street where you can rent a bike for $10 a day.
Other Things to Note
The rooms next to the guest suite is also inhabited by our friendly pet bunny Toro and our cowardly snake Ivana. If you have issues with either of these two animals, let us know and we can arrange for them to be relocated somewhere else in the house during your stay!
Standard house rules:
1) Try not to be too noisy between the hours of 10 pm - 8 am.
2) Don't leave a mess in shared space.
3) No Smoking.
4) Pets are negotiable.
My wife, our dog, and I all really enjoyed our stay at the "House With The Red Door." Our hosts were very accommodating and the space was clean and functional. It's a basement apartment so there's not much natural light, but the deck and fenced in backyard was ideal for meals and relaxing with our dog. We enjoyed sharing the space with their bunny and corn snake (both in cages) and made good use of the laundry facilities and kitchen. The location is fantastic - a block from small restaurants, coffee shops, and Camp Randall - and the historic homes in the neighborhood made walking Biscuit a totally enjoyable experience.
Jj and her family were quite nice and helpful. If we had requests they were nicely responsive. Different from other B&B experiences, because they are a busy young family, we had very little time to chat and intereact. The house, our room and bathroom were all clean and tidy. Our basement room didn't give much of a view but since we were out of the house alot that didn't matter much. Overall we had a pleasant stay with Jj and her husband and child.
JJ was super hospitable and made us feel very welcome! The basement was clean and ready for our stay. We felt safe and the space was cozy. The bed is pretty noisy if you roll over or otherwise adjust your sleeping position and you can hear pretty loud footsteps from upstairs, so I wouldnt recommend this room for light sleepers or anyone who has difficulty with outside noises. Overall, we had a wonderful experience in Jj's home.
Hi KC! The bed frame had somehow become a bit loose, but it's tightened up now so there should be no more problems with noise. Thanks for letting me know! There isn't too much we can do about footsteps with our tiny toddler who sounds like an elephant, but we do try to keep it within reasonable daylight hours (9 am to 9 pm). Hope that helps!
This was our first experience with Airbnb and we were very pleased. Jj and her family were very friendly and welcoming, but not at all intrusive. The accommodations were just perfect for what we needed, and the location couldn't be any better. Everything was perfectly clean and comfortable. We particularly appreciated the parking space, since street parking in that area is sometimes difficult. We highly recommend The House with the Red Door.
Jj and her husband were very friendly and welcoming. The room was exactly as described, with private entrance and bathroom. I found the room a little cool, being a basement room, but Jj had provided a space heater and extra blankets to take care of that. The green neighborhood was quiet, even on Friday and Saturday nights. Nice front and back porches. Cereal, tea, and coffee for breakfast. Good wireless.
Jj was really nice and helpful. This was my first experience with AirBnB and it exceeded my expectations significantly. She greeted us on our arrival and was constantly in touch even before we arrived. She showed us around and the listing was very accurate. The bed was extremely comfortable and the TV room was a plus. She provided all essentials like sheets, pillows, heater, towels, shampoos, brushes, toothpaste and medicines . We were able to utilize the kitchen as well, which had all cooking essentials and ingredients. The cool part about this house is that the "Red door" makes it extremely easy to spot. There are motion-sensing lights which were helpful during the nights to lit our way. The hosts were really helpful in accommodating us and it felt like home away from home.
Despite having travel disruptions that meant I arrived 7 hours late, Jj was happy to wait up and still welcome me to their house. Though I had no free time to spend with the family, they were polite and welcoming every time I did see them. If I ever find myself in Madison again I would definitely stay again.
About the Host, Jj
My husband and I both went to UW Madison for grad school and decided to stick around because we just can't find another city we love more than Madison. We now have a 2 year old son and love getting out into the Monroe St neighborhood to enjoy all of the shops, restaurants and local festivals. Come visit us to find out why we love Madison!
