About This Listing
Our sunny Courtyard Garden Studio Apartment has a well stocked cupboard & fridge for breakfast/lunch. It has its own private entrance, is in the beautiful water side old village of Glounthaune, only 10 minutes east of Cork City by train/car or bus.
My family & I have lived in the beautiful old waterside village of Glounthaune for many happy years. Recently we converted our art studio~gallery at the rear of the house into a very comfortable large double studio apartment which is suitable for holiday guests and also for corporate guests. It has a kitchen and shower room. There is free parking just outside our gate which is always available for guests, we are also on the Cork~Cobh~Midleton Train line for guests that do not have a car. The cosy private space is enclosed by a stone courtyard with an abundance of colourful planting which is very pleasant to sit out and relax in. The apartment is furnished in a vintage country style, with pieces that I have collected and up cycled for your pleasure. The art work is done by myself, friends and family. The double bed has a good mattress with electric blanket which is surrounded by a Victorian frame. There is a little airbed with sleeping bag for a small child under the bed!. The apartment is a very comfortable and a peaceful place to hang out in, in summer or winter. Should one just wish to stay put, there is a good selection of breakfast/lunch/tea nibbles, (frozen dinners in freezer on request), lots of books, TV (for dvd's only for the mo!) eclectic selection of cd's, a large information pack for local and city sights and off the beaten track things to do in general. A mobile phone is available for our foreign guests to use locally while at the property if needed. The kitchen has a sink (instant hot water) fridge, microwave, small electric oven, freezer, expresso machine, kettle, toaster, washer & dryer. The shower room has a large electric shower unit, wc, sink, towels, shampoo & shower gel. There are electric heaters through out the well insulated apartment. Electric Blanket all year round!
Glounthaune Village is a small historic village/hamlet with no through road, with Cork estuary lapping against its key walls. The village is accessed over an old railway bridge from the main road. The village is always beautifully kept by the villagers and is especially lovely in Spring & Summer when so many flowers and shrubs are in bloom. We have a park & a playground in the village by the water's edge, a tidal estuary one minute from the house, the park is lovely for a stroll and the playground wonderful for small children.
The friendly award winning Rising Tide Bar~ Restaurant in the village serves morning coffee, lunch and evening dinner including an early bird menu or just a pint or glass of wine!
There is also a wonderful shop ~ delicatessen within a few minutes walk east of the village.
We are within 10 minutes walking distance of Glounthaune train station which is linked to the main Cork City Kent Station 10 minutes & 2 stops away. The trains run every 30 minutes.
Fota Island Hotel & Spa, Golf Club, Wild Life Park & House (beautiful!) only 10 minutes away (lovely short train journey )Historic Cobh 15 minutes away, Midleton with historic distillery 15 minutes away, Little Island just
5 minutes (very convenient for visiting staff). Undiscovered Barryscourt Castle 10 minutes. Ballymaloe House & Cookery School 30 minutes away, Historic Youghal also 30 minutes away. All of Co. Cork, Co. Waterford & Co.Kerry are easily accessible by car from our home as we live just a few minutes from major road arteries. Into Cork City and the Jack Lynch tunnel (See map on site) is just a few minutes away.
Our guests have access to the court yard & garden apartment by a side entrance of the main house, through the cream archway. The court yard is covered in climbing plants and flowers, it is a nice area to sit out and relax in weather permitting! Guests are also very welcome to use the BBQ. Our guests are also welcome to use the washing machine and dryer which are both in the kitchenette.
There is a TV (only for dvd' at the moment), Books, CD's & DVD's in the Apartment. Very Good Internet Access.
Interaction with Guests
We are members of airbnb since July 2014. We love to meet people and enjoy having guests come to our home. Having traveled frequently in Europe we have always appreciate a warm comfortable bed and a genuine welcome in the places we have stayed, usually b&b's or agritourismo accommodation. We now have the chance to do the same for our guests here in Cork. Both of us are easy going people and the atmosphere here is very relaxed. It would be our wish that all our guests feel comfortable and happy during their stay. I work from home so am usually on hand in the main house for any help, advice or a chat at any time.
We live in a small local community in the country side but within easy reach of the city. It is a wonderful sanctuary but when a bit of hustle & bustle is called for Cork City is only 10 minutes away, very handy for shopping, eating in our wonderful restaurants, and for festivals and events. The tidal estuary is literally on our door step. There are many great beaches and wonderful places to visit within half an hour's drive east and west.
East Cork is well worth exploring, Fota Golf Club which hosted the Irish Open Summer 2014 is a few minutes away also the World Famous Jemeson Brewery is down the road. East Cork is not as well known as West Cork but has its own particular beauty and interest, including its beaches, historic interests and culinary. Well worth exploring!
A car is not necessary to enjoy your stay with us, there is a great Train Service within 10 minutes walking distance of the house (Glounthaune Station) Should you need a lift from the station I am always on hand to collect. This train goes to & from Cork City Kent Station with links nationwide every half hour, also East to Carrigtwohill, Midleton, Fota Wild Life Park, Fota Golf Club Hotel & Spa and Cobh. There is also a great Central Bus Station in the city, Parnell Place Bus Station which services all areas of the city, county and country. There is a bus stop at the top of the village but the train is more frequent to and from the City.
Other Things to Note
A generous welcome pack is provided for guests on arrival, this will include wine, tea, coffee, bread, cereals, jams, nuts, butter, milk, water, juice, yogurts, cold meat & cheese. I can also provide homemade meals at a small cost, which I can put in the freezer to be heated up in the microwave notice of a few days would be needed, just let me know if this is something you would be interested in. When we travel we like our privacy at breakfast time especially, so we thought providing the pack in the apartment was a good idea which would afford that same privacy to our guests, in saying that I am usually around the main house, as I work from home. If guests need advice or just have a chat I am always happy to be there for our guests.
On a\the fine day! it is nice to open up the double doors of the garden studio and have breakfast in the court yard. The Rising Tide bar~ restaurant across the street is really good for morning coffee, lunch, dinner, a drink, also there is a wonderful delicatessen and a 'pub pub' 5 minutes walk down the road, they show sporting activities on the TV.
I hope you enjoy your stay with us... only two rules! I am so sorry the studio is not suitable for pets and there is no smoking in the apartment but there is plenty of space outside in the court yard to smoke.
From May 1 - Aug 31, 2015 the minimum stay is 3 nights.
Jaqui's place is a charming little studio apartment set back by itself in a courtyard garden, full of plants and flowers. Glounthaune is a quiet village on the water, with a good pub just across the street. The train station is within walking distance and very convenient for getting to Cork, Cobh and Midleton if you don't have a car, which we didn't. There is also a grocery shop close by. Jacqui was a warm and welcoming host, leaving us food and wine in the apartment, and driving us to the bus station in Cork on our departure. We enjoyed our stay very much.
Jacqui was a warm and welcoming host. She went out of her way to wait for us to arrive and then showed us around the apartment (which is surrounded by a very nice garden). She provided lots of snacks, drinks and other amenities, more than any host we have experienced on AirBnB so far. These were much appreciated since we could have a full breakfast each morning which saved us valuable time.
We agree with a previous review that the furniture in the room occupies quite a lot of space, and when you have several suitcases laid out on the ground, it can make navigating the apartment a bit tricky. The other issue we had is that the WiFi signal is very weak in the apartment which made internet tasks difficult at times.
The location was good, only a quick drive into Cork, and there is a restaurant across the street if you are hungry. Overall we had a positive experience staying at Jaqcui's apartment.
Thank you for kind words. I have taken out two pieces of furniture from the apartment as you were the second guest to mention it, there is a lot more room now, I am sorry for the inconvenience. With regard to the WiFi, I think the problem arose because we closed off the courtyard from the house a few weeks ago, it has blocked the signal coming from the house, thank you for mentioning it I did not know that the signal was weak, I am getting a booster today that should solve the problem. Wishing you both all the very best Jacqui
Jacqui your Garden Apartment was exactly as your photos showed. We loved the private garden ideal for breakfast and really special in the evening too. Thank you for the lovely treats you left for us and for your caring attentiveness. We would most certainly recommend your accommodation and return when in your area.
The apartment was gorgeous- exactly as in the photos. Some really nice touches- up-cycled furniture and decor, original art and even a To Do chalkboard with only one task- relax! The garden had a recently added gate to make the courtyard even more separate from the house, so it really did feel like our private oasis and when the sun came out it could've been somewhere in Spain!
Jacqui made us feel very welcome, despite living down the road as she had rented out the house to a quiet family. She called us to make sure everything was OK and dropped off a bottle of prosecco, which complemented the supplies she had left in the fridge. She even gave us a lift to Cork train station on our last day. An excellent host. Thoroughly recommended.
My boyfriend and I had a delightful stay at Jacqui's cottage in Glounthaune, outside of Cork. She went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. We felt very welcomed there, it was almost like staying with a friends' aunt in a lovely little seaside village. For those seeking some peace and quiet (the place is SUPER quiet, no street noise) while traveling in Ireland, this is a fantastic option. No need to stay IN Cork imho, this place was just as convenient as a jumping-off point to traveling in SW Ireland.
If you drive, park on the street just outside the cottage. It's unzoned and free. The cottage itself is as adorable as the pictures - shabby chic and cozy, the kitchen and W/D are very convenient and fully stocked.
All in all a beautiful place to stay, would highly recommend it. We will be back next time we're in Ireland!
We spent a memorable journey at Jacqueline's house. This richly decorated annex is located in the courtyard of your host's house in a very nice (but a little bit noisy because of the traffic) neighbourhood. Jacqueline's consideration, thoughtfullness towards her guests is the first thing you will notice. She's a terrific host and deserves her medal from Air BnB! A few examples : we got lost before we arrived to Jacqueline's place and she picked us up ; the fridge was full of food and drinks ; she helped me with my broken glasses, and so on...
In fact, long before you arrived, she set up everything so that you would feel at home... but you won't. Because everything has been better arranged and elaborated than at home: Jacqueline restored lots of pieces of ancient furniture, repainted in pastel tones, you will also find several and dissimilar paintings on the wall and loads of bibelots placed in a little academic but very warm and personal way.
If the studio remains welcoming, it lacks ergonomics. Of course, the room has all of the comforts of home, but it is sometimes difficult to move yourself through this maze of furniture and decoration, especially at dark! But these tiny imperfections won't impact your stay. In order to make it even more interesting, Jacqueline is here to give you some advice (best places in town, nice spots, restaurants...).
All in all, I recommend this studio all the more highly as it is well located, very close to Cork (13 km) and not so far from such nice places like Cobh (14 km - if you go to Cobh, try the Trade Wings restaurant), Kinsale (35 km), Killarney (100 km) and the two peninsulas of Dingle and Bear (150 km). Do not hesitate!
Hi Quentin, thank you for your kind and well thought out review I appreciate it very much. With regard to the traffic, there was a special 60th birthday celebration being celebrated in the Rising Tide restaurant during your stay which would have brought some traffic into the village, I am sorry about that, it is not a usual occurrence . With regards to the furniture, thank you for mentioning this but I have not been made aware that the layout has been a problem for other guests, each piece of furniture does have a purpose and has been placed in the apartment not only for its aesthetic quality but for its practicality, there is nothing in the apartment that does not have a function. I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay despite the issues you mention. I hope that you got your glasses sorted out in Paris! It was a pleasure to meet you both, wishing you all the very best.

About the Host, Jacqueline
I am at a great stage in my life.... my two children are healthy and happy and pursuing their own lives, my daughter is a teacher and my son is in college. I am in a happy relationship with my long term partner who is a garden designer. I am enjoying doing the things that have always interested me such as painting vintage & antique furniture, interior design, life coaching, travel, catching up with friends and creating a space at my home to receive new friends through airbnb. My partner and I love France & Italy but recently have fallen in love with the Sheeps Head Peninsula in West Cork, it is a piece of paradise. When traveling we like to get to know people in the places we visit, it gives us great joy to create genuine friendships. We usually stay with the locals to get a good feel for where we are, and find that this is very culturally fulfilling. I am looking forward to hosting guests in our new apartment and hope that they will be happy to stay with us and maybe return at a later date.
I look forward to meeting you,
