My name is Ermer Azofeifa Mora and I am the President of the Asociación Conservacionista de Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre (ACODOBRARTI). Our community of Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre is situated between the "two arms" of the Tiger River here on the Osa Peninsula and located on the outskirts of world-renowned Corcovado National Park. Though Dos Brazos has a deep history as a gold-mining community, within the past 10 years we have been working extensively to shift the primary economic activities of Dos Brazos away from the damaging practices of gold mining, hunting and logging in favor of sustainable sources of work that not only seek to safeguard the community’s unique natural landscape, but also depend on it. While the association, comprised of 56 community members, has received an abundance of support in the past from local NGO’s and government organizations, including a visit from the President of the Republic of Costa Rica in May 2015, much of the ACODOBRARTI's success can be attributed to the emphasis on implementing change through an educational approach, focusing to not only transform community behavior, but more enduring, transform the community’s mentality with regard to conservation and the need for it. The resulting effects of these efforts have come to fruition in recent years in the form of our community-wide adoption of ecotourism and other alternative sustainable economic activities with notable successes that include the opening of the community’s first entrance into Corcovado National Park in February 2015, the training and certification of 25 community members as local park guides, and the construction of a community native plant nursery and botanical garden focused on providing a means to protect and sustain the local landscape and wildlife habitats of the many unique species of animals and birds found exclusively on the Osa Peninsula. We are proud to call Dos Brazos home, and are eager to share with visitors a piece of our local culture and way of life. From Corcovado hikes, horseback riding tours and community cooking classes, we have a variety of activities to offer a truly authentic experience of life on the Peninsula. We hope you'll come pay us a visit soon!
